I'd try some adjustment on the carb before re jetting. Sounded pretty good. Airscrew and needle height adjustment might get you bang on. But if it seems to be leaning out on the high end a bigger main will probably be the ticket. Nice old Honda. I remember when these were all over the place. Great to see one being saved

Someone made this comment already. I agree, the needle needs adjusting. If needle clip is on second position, just move it up to 1st position. Or if it’s on 3rd position, move it up to 2nd position. I had this same issue on my cr250. I did everything. Rebuilt the card new reeds all that. Only thing I didn’t do was move the needle position. Since after all that work, the issue still existed, I checked the needle. It was in 2nd position so I moved it up to 1st position. Problem was solved. Not saying this is definitely your issue but worth trying.

@@supermairo1716 don't forget that this is a 1984, stock jetting is made for 32:1. Believe it or not, less oil won't do anything. If ya wanna do it right you need to pressure test that engine it a pretty simple thing to make to make sure you have no air leaks. Also that looks to be a PJ Keihin carb missing the thumb wheel twisting it should adjust the idle circuit. Curious too know what jetting it has. When a bike is breaking up like that at full operating temp its rich. Jetting can be tricky. I would suggest air leak test it and if good, find the OEM jetting and start there with that pipe and a factory air box it should only need a main jet size and maybe a pilot jet change or a turn out on the pilot screw. Also make sure the needle matches what it was supposed to have. These old bike get carb swapped all the time. It could be for another bike who knows.

@rusticraver822 жыл бұрын
Loving your videos! Learning a lot from them, thank you.👌 One tip when bleeding the brake line, you should close the bleed nipple bolt off whilst holding the brake lever fully closed, otherwise you're just moving the fluid and air to and fro without pumping the air completely out of the lines. So to summarise - 1) open bleed nipple 2) Pull brake lever in and hold 3) close the bleed nipple 4) release brake lever 5) Repeat until bled.
@rusticraver822 жыл бұрын
Definitely look into the needle height/condition, it's breaking up on the transition between pilot and main jet 👍 sounded sweet WOT (I know this is an old video but thought I'd comment)
@jtreminger4 жыл бұрын
Ya I was the one who commented on the ATAC chamber below the pipe. That has a valve in it that gets carbon fouled and needs to be cleaned. It was Honda’s first attempt at a power valve. 1986 changed to the HPP (Honda Power Port) motor. If it gets fouled it stops operating correctly and can be a cause of your bogging down in the lower gears. Carb needs to be cleaned as well and check your reeds. Good luck.

Get a new plug, run it only initial to mid throttle, get the plug reading after that. Then get another new plug, run full throttle, kill start after full-throttle run, get the plug reading then. This will narrow down which jetting is at fault, low speed jet or high speed jet. I'm willing to bet it's too rich somewhere based on your plug reading, black is rich, brown is just right, white is lean. Very nice bike, I'd love it in my shed if I could.

The mid-to-late eighties CR are my favorite. I need to find a decent book on building the carburetors for two strokes and jetting them correctly
@jakejames19774 жыл бұрын
Crank seal on flywheel side you are sucking air . Pull the flywheel and replace it then jet the carburetor if need be. Otherwise you will be chasing your tail with jetting and it will still run like crap. Remember that carburetor on that bike is not the oem carburetor the other carburetor that came with the bike is the original one. You can check for air leaks by spraying starting fluid around air boots and seals ,you know if rpm picks up when idling you found your leak.

Slowly crank engine over many times saving foot. Now spray a squirt of starting fluid, crack throttle a bit and kick one time with all your might. Clean looking cr 👍💯. Build a leak down tester and use soapy water to test around all your seals and gaskets, this will let you know if your pulling in air from anywhere (leaning the bike). Also check your float height, you may not be getting enough fuel, just like needing to tip it over side ways to get it to start, you shouldn't have to do that. Common place to create a lean condition would be the magneto/flywheel crank seal (left side of bike). If you are pulling in air it will lean your bike and burn up your piston. Two tools that are a must have - compression tester and leak down. Those two tools will save you a lot of time and help you better know the health of your engine.
@coloradodirtbike59304 жыл бұрын
@@jaydensdream714 yea if the bikes been sitting. He just built it back so it should have fresh enough fuel in the bowl. I'm going to say his float level is incorrect and shutting off too early, not letting the bike get enough fuel, which also can create a lean condition. When you tip your bike half way over and it's not pissing out fuel out of the breather vent tube, it means it's too low.
@coloradodirtbike59304 жыл бұрын
@@jaydensdream714 agreed. Amazing how some brass jets, reeds, air leak, and float fuel levels too high or low can do. All those small little parts working together make a night and day difference on your bikes performance when fine tuned. I had a1984 CR 125. You need to clean the Atac exhaust valve first. If you have done that then jetting is needed. It really doesn't sound far off once it is warmed up and you are running it through the gears. It is a race bike and doesnt like tooling round. A larger main jet and needle will help. Check what position the needle is in. Quick way to check if the bike is running lean is to put on the choke as you ride it. If it runs better with choke on, it's running lean. Fine tune 1/4 to 3/4 throttle by adjusting the needle position. A leak down tester will let you know if there is an air leak anywhere. With the amount of bikes you now work on, the leak down tester will be very useful to you.

Always have a hose on the bleeder valve when bleeding brakes... no wonder your garage floor is stained all over the place. The raised waffle part of the grip goes down, for your fingers & fingertips to grip better. And I agree that you should stop twisting the throttle when starting. This is only needed for a flooded engine (wide open when kicking), when the choke is not working or when there are other carb issues. In a good running bike, 2-stroke or 4-stroke, there should be no need for any throttle when starting. Also your techniques are a little rough and need refinement. Using a utility knife to clean the handlebar? LOL that's ineffective and also ruins your blade. Steel wool or scotch brite would be much better. Otherwise you seem to have good knowledge of bike mechanics and have good success getting these old bikes running. Thanks for the videos. P.S. DO NOT ride any dirt bike without the chain slider (top of swingarm) and case saver. That's just begging for a disaster. You may have mangled the top of the swingarm in this one short riding session, but I hope not. P.P.S. Dang, the more I watch the more problems I see. Not only are you using pliers on the spark plug, but it's cross threaded. This is a big problem. I could tell by the angle of the plug relative to the head, the few number of turns to get the plug out, and the condition of the first few threads on the plug. Also, this may be the reason it's not running quite right. Get a proper wrench (or socket) for the spark plug. Clean up the threads and hope that a new plug will thread in straight. Good luck.
