I suspect you are exactly correct although not precisely what you meant. That bike was likely stolen at some point. No way anyone that knows anything about motorcycles sells THAT for $100. Not saying the person he bought it from stole it. Probably one of those "I traded for it" deals. Not concern where it originally came from. But that's the society we live in now.

What a steal and so original. The bike only has a trip meter that goes up to 999 miles and that trip meter can be reset or removed at any time so it's very doubtful that it's only done 277. Having said that the bike is in nice tidy original condition and it probably hasn't done to many hours. I'm glad you seem to appreciate the gem you scored.

I had an IT 250 when I was younger, they are perfect trail bikes. The kings back in the day. These motors are bulletproof you can run them hard they still thank you for it. But again they have the power that comes on like a light switch. I don't know why Yamaha put the bracket in the centre of the pipe, I snapped mine these bikes are shit when it comes to catching air. They can chew up plugs to so keep them clean you need to run them hard go wide open with the throttle when you have the room

I had one of these for 10 years. eventually replaced by an 05 wr 250 Husky. Check it has gearbox oil. Mine emptied the gearbox oil through the primary drive side crank seal.( It was running fine even with a faulty seal). They're great bikes . Wish i still had mine. They're difficult to hill climb , Not quite enough power, a short wheelbase and soft rear suspension. They wheelie too easily and are hard to steer while climbing. You'll see. Great to trail ride and even commute.

A friend of mine had a 1980 Yamaha IT 400, got it brand new, and I rode it many times at a sand pit near me. great engine, I loved the powerband, but the suspension sucked, very little travel, about 8 inches in the front and 7 inches in the back. The suspension was way too soft and he had to get both the front shocks and the rear shock modified, with stronger springs. For that year he had 1980, the IT the rear monoshock sucked, I would say it had about 4 inches of useable travel, it would bottom out over a foot high jump, it was really soft from the factory. Once he got the suspension upgraded it was a pretty good bike. Very reliable, but it was also a little heavy, back then it was made of all steel. And btw, around here a 200cc dirt bike is almost worthless, because it does not have enough power. We ride in a sand/gravel pit with some giant sand hills, and that 200cc does not have enough power to make most of the hills, some 250's do not even have enough power to make some of the hills around here. Where I live and ride almost everyone has a 400cc dirt bike, or bigger, because of all the big sand hills. I had a 1982 Suzuki RM465, my friend had the 1980 Yamaha IT400, and my other friend had the 1980 Kawasaki KDX400.

a good tip for cleaning the green rotten fuel from a carb is to pick up Some engine tuner. It’s made by Johnson/ Evinrude. You should be able to get it at a marine dealer. Trust me it is awesome. Just spray it. Let it soak for a while. Cleans that hunk right up. I know this because I worked at an atv and marine repair shop for 10 years. Sweet IT 200 tho.

@gailtaylor1636
@gailtaylor1636 2 жыл бұрын
That air filter is junk. Those hairy filters were about impossible to clean. An aftermarket dual layer was much better. Separate the two layers, clean, put filter in large zip-lock bag & pour oil on. Close bag and kneed oil thru it. Squeeze excess out. Blot filter with a paper towel to remove excess oil. Really doesn't take much filter oil to do it's job.

I was given one of those with the engine apart and in a box. The cases had been warped by the guy that improperly separated them and it sucked transmission oil into the crank case and blew it out the exhaust. Was a pain in my ass going through it, re assembling it twice before realizing what the problem was. Same damned bike, but had a tool pouch behind the seat in the frame loop above the fender.
