I’m a renovator of bikes etc in the uk.. I would cut off the cross member where the crack is… ally weld the cases, then weld back the cross member… also fix the rotted frame etc while I was under there…. It’s a days work but the machine is good on the land or farm …. And it’s a Honda… they run forever… good luck with the thing. Enjoy your channel too. But more 60s and 70s bikes if possible, that’s my thing…👌👍

Thanks for the video.. I don’t know the history of that quad, but like items have been stolen in this neck of the woods through the years and the first thing they do is paint bomb everything and park it behind sheds and such out of site and worse; they don’t care for their theft item as it becomes a throwaway or they parts it out. They driving it down the salted roads through the winters without care is one of your main culprits to all that rust - Wisconsin loves it salt. I am glad you are taking the care needed to put this machine back into working order.. Hopefully the past legal owner had theft insurance and that you can apply for a license for the machine. It’d be a good end story for the Honda… Cheers from BRaF!

Mt thoughts exactly, there is a product called steel stick, it comes in a tube and is a pudy that you blend together. You cut what you need, blend it, and it will bond to steel. Even a gas tank that leaks, it sets up like a rock,, you can drill and tap it. I have used it and it's great. Then keep I on the land, if someone steals it's not a big loss.

My first thought was to tear it down and save all the good parts for future repairs, it has a good motor, transmission and all the rotating parts work. Then you got it running and driving and because it drives and runs so well my position has changed a little bit. I wouldn't go full rebuild on it as it is a beat up quad but I think it would be a great quad to patch up and use as your new beater quad. Weld up the cases (good time to buy a welder with an aluminum spool gun), fix the rear brake, get the throttle cover replaced and the parking brake fixed. Don't worry about the plastics or the side cover. It will be a great running beater quad for years.

I just finished repairing the frame on a Rancher 350 that looked just like that. I used 3/16 thick angle iron to build Rock sliders" on the whole bottom of the frame. Twice as thick as factory tubing and the rigidity of the 90% angle. You can also just pick up a complete rear swingarm for about 200 on ebay.

I fixed an Al oil pan in a cat once as an emergency in a remote area with JB, and when I returned to base a week later I found a replacement. Idecided to keep it till I saw it dripping. Years later that replacement gathered dust in a shelf. Not a drop came out, and it was more than a square inch of puncture. The whole cat landed on a sharp rock. I never trusted jb weld that much, but after this I was sold. You'd think an old pan would contract and expand 2-3 times a day reaching 250F at times. But it has to be done from the inside, the outside fixing is useless.

My experience with cracks in casings (when I just want to do a quick, hack repair) it to grind the area out in a V, and roughen the metal around the area, clean it well/degrease while keeping the engine tipped to keep oil from running out. Apply a smooth bead of “THE RIGHT STUFF” gasket maker to the area and smooth out with a finger. Let sit for specified time to set. I had to use this on an old Honda Big Red 3 wheeler with great success (lasted 2 years until I sold it). Prior to that I used JB weld as well, but it continually failed due to its rigidity.

Um would you be willing to take a tip from an older mechanic than you ? When checking for spark, buy replacement clips for a small battery charger that fits most spark plug bases and make a jumper with the two clips so you can clamp one to the frame /engine and the other to the plug. This way you can get a good ground and view for the camera to see the spark.

I've been thinking the same thing. It's just a jump wire with a big enough end on one side of it that it will clamp onto the spark plug. It would simplify the spark testing a lot for him. There are several things he could use. I was really close to boxing up something for his electrical diagnostics and sending it to him but I got busy with other stuff. As far as what to do with that thing, considering the severe rust, that crack and the overall looks of it, I don't feel there would be value in repairing it.

Tigvetsa it as it is now, if you can't find the frame number it's not worth splitting the engine. The plastic needs a lot of work too. But really good job getting it running and finding all the problems.

Looks like that Honda was sitting in some mud and water for several years to get that type of frame rust. I would suspect that water got in the crank from the environment and cracked with many thaw / freeze cycles….hence no oil. It would be a great episode to see if you /someone could successfully weld the case and the frame to get it back to “beater” status. Would be a great machine for a farm/cabin/cottage.

You Need a Boltster for all the disassembly you do.. Throw up a PO Box so long time fans like myself can send you the things that help us around the garage.. Or, Hey #Bolster Hook this guy up with some product. One of You Tube's finest right here!!

To weld, especially aluminum, the surface has to be really clean. You’d have to disassemble the whole thing to do it correctly, so IMHO just JB Weld it and keep it as a workhorse until it dies. Great work!

Had a hole in the bottom of an 1986 xr250r. Jb weld lasted for 4 years of pretty hard riding and 1 hare scramble. Still fine when I sold it. Good luck!

Joe, I think you should try welding the case. And while you got it on its side cut out the rusted plates and put new ones in. You have 300 buck plus your time in it. Spend a few bucks on it, you will have a good four wheeler to work at your property. Maybe 500 bucks plus your time. It seems to have the same power as mine does.

I wouldn't put all that money into it, Joe. I think you know that too. I was amazed that you were even able to ride it. As soon as you had spark, fuel & compression, I figured you'd have it running.

Take a dremell and gouge out the cracks and make a V in the case and on temu they sell low temp solder Stix that will work with any metal. They are low priced and work great. Just clean it up good after gouging and with a torch lay a bead in the cracks and you'll be amazed!

Pulling those motors is NOT a fun job. I'm sure you can find a new case section fairly easy or have that one tig welded somewhere. Just be careful pulling that wierd cross mounted hoss. Greatvid, needs lot of TLC, I know you'll get her back to good.

I'd love to see Joe get a vintage Spanish dirt bike from the 70's to work on. I had a Montessa as a kid and it was a really cool bike.

Use some paintstripper on the plastics, and JB-weld the case. Sell it off as a beater ATV. With that much rust on the frame, i wouldt care more about it. Thnx for another entertaining clip. This is one of my favourite channels. 👏👍

You can get and use aluminum welding rods. I did an Arctic cat 500cc case years ago. Worked better than the poor stick weld they previously tried to use. All done with a small map gas/oxy torch, but there are some tricks to it, mainly you have to get the case hot enough, so I had to actually use both a reg propane torch and the oxy/map gas to get enough heat into it, then it was just like soldering. I doubt JB weld and silicone will last long. Nothing to lose cuz otherwise with the cracked case, its a parts bike. Or find another bike with a blown engine and build one out of two.

Damn shame someone abused that machine like they did. Honda's are awesome and reliable. Having said that, it is too far gone to throw much money at. It would pay you most to part it, and I would say stick it out at your land, but how many do you need out there, lol? Nice fix though Joe, great job.

I'm only a minute in...and I watch ALL your video...and I'm wondering at this point WHY? If you got this for free...if they paid YOU to take it... I mean WHY other than the pure challenge of seeing if you could get it to run would your take it? Assuming you get it to run (and I'll find that out over the next hour), who would then be willing to take it from you...at any price? Maybe you'll address some of these questions in the next few minutes. What a great mystery! Update after watching...another wonderful video!

Joe, that bike was used on the roads in the winter with all the salt on the metal, so that's why it is so rusted and rotten with the low mileage.. Too bad people don't take better care of these machines.
