Thank you so much for this. I started my swap on a 1990 Toyota PU that used to belong to my dad over a year ago and life happened. My swap is mostly a sentimental thing in memory of my dad. It was his daily driver until he sold it to my son when he purchased a 2007 Tacoma. I purchased pretty much all the parts you guys did from ORS when I started this swap a year ago. I started with a JDM 3.4. So far I have pretty much replaced every seal in the engine, all OEM Toyota timing belt service, had the oem injectors rebuilt by a local guy here in Denver, CO. My proudest achievement though is refinishing the stock valve covers in crinkle red like the Ferrari valve covers. That is the sickest mod so far! Life is better now so I'm cleaning up some loose ends and getting ready to start up and finish up the swap again. This video will provide an invaluable source of reference for me. Thank you once again! I ordered some knock sensors from Yota1 based on your referral. Keep doing what you do.

Best thing I ever did with the load leveler I bought about 20 years ago from Shuck's was to take the crank handle off, and use my 3/8 drive impact gun to run the leveler back and forth. You make a good observation. We did use a 2nd Gen manual to get tips on pulling the 3.0 engine. Brendon had a 2nd Gen manual. We didn't use our 3rd Gen manual much because we already know all the in and outs of the 3.4 liter engine and had our 3.4 Engine Swap series to reference for all the necessary torque specs. We always, always, always reference the factory service manuals for our jobs.

@@RossWilliamsDC It depends how much work you want to do and what your engine is due for. Lots of things will be easier with the engine out. Replacing the timing belt, water pump, timing belt idler pulleys and timing belt tensioner. Replacing cam and camshaft seals. Doing a valve cover gasket job. Replacing any brittle and old heater hoses. Replacing engine mounts. Resealing the oil pan if it's leaking. Replacing your drive belts. And the list goes on.

Not familiar with the 4.0 engine. I wonder if it's as dependable as the 3.4. Also, going with the 4.0, it's just a guess, but more custom work would have probably been required.
@Pb_Slinger
@Pb_Slinger 2 жыл бұрын
@@TimmyTheToolman without a doubt, more work would be needed. Engine mounts for one… I think the 4.0 is probably more prevalent (dependable) then any other Toyota V6. You also get more transmission options, even manual… The 4.0 was used in the early Tundra as well as 2nd Gen Tacos and 4th and 5th Gen Runners.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 жыл бұрын
@@Pb_Slinger I thought I remembered hearing the 4.0 wasn't that great but maybe I heard wrong. I bet there's a whole lot more to consider than just engine mounts if you wanted to put a 4.0 in a 2nd Gen 4runner, but yeah, fabricating custom engine mounts would be one of them.

Just finished my 22re to 5VZFE swap and had a question about the 3.4l that you might have come across. For starters this is a used engine with 235k miles out of a 97 Tacoma. on initial start up everything was great no issues. Test drive in town no problems everything went find till the highway. I needed to drive out of town to see a relative was about a 45 min trip, half way there had to pull over because the engine was way to hot. Buy the time I got to pull over I lost half a gallon of coolant, topped off the radiator, made sure the cooling system was circulated and got to my destination but had to rinse and repeat twice. This is what I have done so far after a two hour trip home, of course no more coolant had to run straight water to get home with multiple stops. I have bypassed the heater core all together, flushed the cooling system, pressure tested cooling system, did a compression test 162 psi across the board, did a combustion test without negative results. New fan and clutch for a 3.0l with a three row 3.0 brass radiator, I even have a secondary fan wired in for just in case and that still won't cool the engine on the highway. There is plenty of room for air to circulate in the engine compartment, I've even went as far as venting the hood. MIL light is on but is only for the EVP system because I had to bypass if temporarily. I thought it could have be a P0420 for restricted catalytic converter. I think everything is pointing to bad cylinder head or head gasket, even with the tests I've done. how about your thoughts?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 жыл бұрын
If coolant is disappearing that fast and you can't find a leak, you engine has to be consuming it. Do a compression check of your cylinders with your coolant system pressure tester is pressurizing the system. When doing the compression check of each cylinder, watch the gauge on the cooling system pressure tester. If the cooling system pressure gauge starts to bounce while doing the compression check of a cylinder, that means cylinder pressure is leaking past a bad head gasket and into a cooling jacket.

Please do a simple Google search and you can easily find the stats on both engines. If you watched the later parts, you'd see the transmission mounts up fine. 4wheel drive makes no difference with how the transmission connects to the engine other than it's back heavy with the transfer case attached.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 3 ай бұрын
Well, the ads are how we can make some money for our efforts. If you don't like watching ads, you can purchase a KZbin Premium membership. The time we invest into making videos, espercially for projects like this one is massive. We've been running our channel for around 8.5 years now. We have around 85k subscribers and average around 200k views per month for our library of over 300 videos. Do you know how much we make for the time we put in every year? That amount is around $20-25k from KZbin and Sean and I split that. So, with that said, your whining about the ads really isn't received all that well. Like I said, if you don't like ads, pay for KZbin Premium. If I was doing this for the money, I would have quite within the 1st year. We do this mainly to help people, but generating some revenue for ourselves does help with expenses we have. I hope you learned something from this exchange. If not, oh well, I tried to educate you a little on how poorly KZbinrs of our size are compensated.

The auto wreckers in our area, PicknPull, only tell you if they have a certain vehicle. You have no idea what parts are left. Usually the engine is gone on the first day. There's professional pickers that are vultures when a new rig arrives. It sucks because it's next to impossible to pull parts off an engine because it's always gone. They also snag things like e-lockers and other parts that are known to fetch a good price.

How much would a complete swap cost be on average assuming you get just solid parts?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman Жыл бұрын
Hey Ernesto, that's a hard estimate to give since it depends on which way you go. If you go with a quality rebuilt engine, like Yota1 Performance sells, you're looking at $4500 just for the engine. Then you have the price of the wiring harness from a place like Off Road Solutions and all the other related parts. So, it can be fairly expensive. If you go with a used 3.4 L engine, that will save you money, but then you're taking a fairly big risk you're getting a good engine. Anyway, look at the parts we used from ORS and you can price them on their website. Figure out what your engine will cost and then you can come up with a decent estimate to do it. Good luck!

The tool you are missing is ... a hot air gun (or even a hair dryer). You were repeatedly cursing while trying to pull off a hose, or messing with a hose pick (which is hard on the hose if you wanted to re-use it). Instead, gently warm the rubber first; it will become more pliable and much more cooperative. This will even work on electrical connectors, and help prevent breaking those.

Any advice for doing this swap, but with a automatic transmission and not a manual? I hear the route to take is to get a donor auto T100 4x4. Any thoughts?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 жыл бұрын
The process would be the same for a rig with an automatic other than the fact you don't have to mess with any clutch parts and bleeding the clutch slave cylinder. I don't know about the T100 4x4 being the optimal donor vehicle. You could get any donor vehicle with the 3.4 liter engine so you have all the associated parts like the Evap canister, MAF sensor, Igniter, etc. If you plan on using the used engine from the donor vehicle, I can see the T100 being beneficial because the dipstick is already in the right spot and there will be no hole to plug on the oil pump housing like you would have to do with a donor vehicle that had the dipstick there. We're not really the true experts for this swap. Guys like Mike and Derek at ORS are the experts. We're just some guys that decided to document this job for others to benefit from. I would suggest you do research on the ORS website and maybe other websites of companies that specialize in these swaps.

I have a 2.4l on a 2004 Toyota Tacoma I wanted to do a 3.6l v6 engine swap what would I need to do to get the job done?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 жыл бұрын
Because it's a different engine, you'll need along with the engine, the wiring harness, ECU, Evap Canister, and igniter. It would be best to get the whole engine with all the accessory parts included like the AC compressor, power steering pump, and alternator. The easiest way to go would be to get a wrecked 2004 Tacoma donor vehicle so you have everything you need in one vehicle. The wiring harness won't need to be custom because the 3.4 liter engine did come as an option for the 1st Gen Tacoma. It should be a very straightforward job provided you can source all the parts you need.

Timmy, as I'm pretty convinced that you are aware that a lot of the 80s & 90s Toyota engines are loaded up with vacuum lines. Seems that just about every thing on the engine is controlled by vacuum and then loaded up with environmental controls. My hometown city in Tenn has been doing emissions testing for many years which will end on Feb 3rd 2022. You have a lot on expertise in these engines and have probably forgotten more about them most of us diy's have knowledge off so this leads me to the question. Which I'm sure you seen coming, what is your opinion on the 3.0 vz egr deletes. Caution ! ( Lots of Controversy on this subject and I wouldn't want to load your forum up with same.) If you choose not to answer I will understand. Gary in Tenn

Hey Gary, I actually have very little experience with the 3.0 Engine. If you can believe it, this was my first and only experience with this engine. So, I actually don't know a whole lot about them and thus can't offer an opinion about EGR deletes.

@@pyr0674 Look at last part of the series and we discuss the cruise control. Brendon had cruise control in his rig originally so your situation would be different.
