As an owner of a 1989 Toyota 4x4 3vze standard cab pickup with the 5 speed manual transmission for over 27 years with my father being the original owner, if taken care of this engine is extremely reliable, smooth and quiet. I do change my coolant every three years. Several years ago I did the valve shim adjustment and overall I do keep the truck well maintained, so operates like a new vehicle. Also to note, my vehicle is stock.

Good to hear that your experience has been positive with this engine. Others haven’t been so lucky. Have you had the pleasure of replacing your valve cover gaskets on your engine yet? - Sean

Yes, when I performed the valve shim adjustment back in 2017.

The legendary 3.slow LOL. I’ve heard people call it that.😂

Not sure how legendary it is.. it’s def known for its shortcomings. - Sean

Wish my 3.blow would start 🤣 miss driving mine, but 5vzfe swap coming, and I'll be using your videos for reference 👌

Good luck with the 5VZ Swap when you get around to doing it.

Could you remove the 4 screws at the Reed valve to lessen the struggle get the plunium up off that rear hose at the back engine?
@fredfred40836 ай бұрын
Should there be some consern of distorting or bending the cam shaft when removing the rear cam collers ?
@jamsolid3 ай бұрын
Frig me, realizing you have to take the plenum off to get to the spark plugs on passenger side of this engine 😭😭😭 and if not for the spark plugs, most certainly for the fuel injectors. Thanks for this... I'm terrified, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

It's definitely not the easiest Toyota engine to work on. The sea of vacuum hoses is pretty intimidating to deal with.

Timmy, off topic question. I know you always seem to answer most questions. Without me having to go back through your many videos, what grease/lube do you use for ball joint c clamp threads??? I can't remember which product you use. Thanks
@TimmyTheToolman7 ай бұрын
Any all-purpose grease would work.

Please do an extensive video on doing a manual swap. I really want to do mine but if I do it’ll be the biggest job I’ll ever do
@TimmyTheToolman7 ай бұрын
100% this would definitely be something we want to document - that future video would apply to a 89-95 pickup or a 2nd gen 4runner. we have the transmission, now we just need to source the additional parts to get started. - Sean

15:01 --- Am I trippin or what the hell is that hose? does that come from the upper radiator hose/ water thing junction???? i have never seen a 3vze look anything like that and now u have me curious if i have that other hard line too (the one you removed that hose from). also is it just me or was that TPS backwards on the throttle body.... or is mine lol.... im no expert and have been learning my 3vze 94 4runner 4x4 inside and out the past few years and just genuinely curious why ours looks a lot different there. just 5th owner of a vehicle problems ( 4 dummys before me throwin tonka truck parts on) lol???

at about 43:00 min in you got the valve covers off and its all cleaned up nice, you can see small bits and wires from the brush sitting in the little puddles of oil left in the valves. How do you ensure you clean everything out especially stuff that is deeper than you can't see?
@TimmyTheToolman7 ай бұрын
We just wiped it out with rags, some brake cleaner and then some compressed air. - Sean

Damn I need a 120 click point ratchet and some flex head 🤗🤗🤗
@TimmyTheToolman7 ай бұрын
Those things are worth their weight in gold. I couldn't imagine not having those 120 click point ratchets and flex head ratcheting box end wrenches. Absolute game changers.
@danielboughton36242 ай бұрын
@@TimmyTheToolman Not dogging on the 120 click point but you can for sure get that bolt out with a regular old ratchet. Also if you crack it loose then you can use a stubby to increase speed.
@TimmyTheToolman2 ай бұрын
@@danielboughton3624 But, 120 ratchets are the BOMB!!! In tight areas, they really shine. I couldn't imagine going back to 90 or lower click point ratchets. You got to get yourself some Daniel and then you'll be a believer.

PLEASE HELP. So I’ve been doing this job for a month now. Working two jobs so barely have time. But when tightening the bolts on valve cover, the threads get ripped out. 3 bolts broke so it turned out i needed to replace all the bolts. But now im at a point where i CANT torque the bolts. Its like the aluminum is soft or something. I did a helicoil repair. But when i went to torque i didn’t even hit 15 pounds and the helicoil failed
@johnmorgan199819 күн бұрын
And it feels like ill rip out the threads on EVERY bolt. Does metal get soft over time, have you ever seen this . Any advice , my car got repoed 2 month’s ago and i struggle to get to work. I ride a bike to my morning job and lyft to my second job. This truck only has 155k og miles

Where did you get a spec of 15 ft-lbs for the valve cover bolts? The spec is 48 in-lbs which would be 4 ft-lbs. You're over-torquing the bolts and that's probably why you are stripping them. You're nearly quadrupling the torque value.
