That is a NICE flat torque curve. Seems like it would be really pleasant in a Drift / SuperCruise car. Comes on strong, rolls over gently, and seems to self limit at high Rpms. Perfect T3 midrange engine combo. With a smooth long travel throttle this would be a dream .

@AB-80X
@AB-80X Жыл бұрын
Seeing that SME do custom builds, I'm sure they can accommodate that. It's not like mounting a pulley with the ribs for A/C needs to be a big deal. Lot's of ways. That's a small blower for the power. That torque curve would be better with a bigger blower.

So on that engine is it the volume of air the supercharger pushes or the psi that determines the power? Awesome build just trying learn a little more.
@JuniorJunison
@JuniorJunison Жыл бұрын
I think it's the pressure, because if you think about it, the more pressure you make the more air the supercharger is moving because that means there is more air in the same amount of volume, for example, 50psi vs 100psi, let's just say for the sake of comparison that the doubling of pressure doubles the volume, now I'm not sure if the actual volume each pressure would fill under normal atmospheric pressure but we'll say it's double, the 100psi would, when allowed to escape into a balloon for example at normal atmospheric pressure would blow it up bigger than th 50psi blown up balloon. The more pressure the more air molecules are in the combustion chamber allowing for more air to be available for the gas to burn. Hopefully that makes sense.
@stevemorrisracing
@stevemorrisracing Жыл бұрын
Yes and kinda. More volume meets a restriction in the engine, ( engine is a air pump ) Restriction is PSI
@daricusfields5641
@daricusfields5641 Жыл бұрын
The reason I ask is because the power number seems higher than a turbo engine with the same psi. Thanks for explaining it!
@AB-80X
@AB-80X Жыл бұрын
@@daricusfields5641 You cannot equate a specific boost number with a specific amount of power. The PSI number is really nothing more than a measure of restriction, but somehow people are all hung up on boost. Look at it this way. If I have two identical engines which are both 427's. Same heads, pistons etc. but different cams for example. One cam has low lift and small duration, a stock LS7 cam for instance. The other is a healthy cam with say .680" of lift, 250 degrees of intake duration with a split of 16 degrees and a 114+4 degree LSA.Now let's say we run a pulley combo that puts 10 PSI on the little LS7 which gives it what, 675 hp or so. Now let's put that same pulley combo on the engine with the big cam and the PSI will drop like thrown from a cliff and the engine will most likely make roughly the same power. The reason is that the engine can pull in a lot more air on its own, thus it becomes much less of a restriction. So as you can see, you'll need for the blower to move a lot more air in order to make the same boost. And if you make the 10 psi on the big cam engine, you'll make more power. If you put that big pulley combo on the small cam mill, then the boost will skyrocket. If you really want to make a lot of boost, just put a block-off plate on the bottom of the blower so it can't get rid of the air. Some engines make 800 hp with 12 PSI of boost, others make 1200 despite being the same size. Cams, heads, exhaust, intake etc. It all matters and has an impact on the restriction the blower sees. When ever people say as a generalization that "You can't run this or that amount of boost with pump gas" it just shows you how little they know. You can have a combination that will detonate its brains out at 6 psi while another will be fine at 16 psi. All it is, is a measure of restriction.
@midnight347
@midnight347 11 ай бұрын
@AB-80X you are correct other than more cubes and bigger cam (i.e. more efficient engine) is likely going to make MORE at LESS boost despite having less boost not the same. If pullied to make the same boost again it'll make way more. People do get too hung up on psi.

@JuniorJunison
@JuniorJunison Жыл бұрын
Fuck yeah. Bear in mind however you probably want to tune it just above that because depending on climate and altitude, mainly where air is thinner, you'll end up losing horsepower, that is if you're strictly wanting to maintain at least 1000 horsepower. 1000 horsepower on pump gas is easy peasy.
@midnight347
@midnight347 11 ай бұрын
@@JuniorJunisonyea it is w a 3 liter blower and a built 427 cube engine. 1000 on pump isn't always easy peasy. It's either gotta be that or a smaller engine with a huge blower or turbo that is gonna make it lazy but still make that big peak number. People focus way too much on peak when they need to worry about the entire power curve especially on a street car.

What's the most powerful LS you built with a Whipple?
@AB-80X
@AB-80X Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisHimself1357 Lol, that's an interesting amount of generalizations. The difference between driving the 3.0 and 4.5 in terms of putting out the same net power is not that big, especially if you lean on the small blower. What you lose in the bigger internals, you can often make up for with a slightly cooler charge. Also, the smaller blower will have to be spun faster. The 4.5 will only make more power if you let it, so you cannot generalize and say that the 4.5 will make 1900 hp if the 3.0 makes 1450. Here's the short of it. If you make the same crank power, the power needed to drive each blower will be very similar. How much air it takes to make 1450 hp in this case, does not change just because you change the blower. The larger 4.5 might be a big more efficient here as the 3.0 is at its limits, but if both make 19 psi, the power will be very equal. As for 1900 hp being the limit for clamping power? Where the heck did you pick up that nonsense? Sorry, not trying to be rude, but that's totally incorrect. Just a quick matter of fact. The stress on the heads will be very different depending on whether you make 1900 hp at say 6500 rpm or 8500 rpm. Why? Cylinder pressure. Do yourself a favour. Don't buy into all the B.S you get from the bench racers.
@midnight347
@midnight347 11 ай бұрын
Why would you need more than 1450 hp? That is ridiculous. Some people want a good overall curve not just peaky power. Also the 4.5 is an old design it prob wouldn't be as much better than the 3.0 as you think. The 3.8 prob be a better choice
