Depending on how close it is, the Earth would just be some particles in space

And the worst part about gamma ray bursts is that there is basically no way to detect them since they move at light speed. The only warning you'd get is a light flickering in the sky for a few seconds (The supernova), then sudden death will occur.

For comparison, Betelgeuse is expected to last up to another 100,000 years before going supernova. NASA would have to only notice this star once it has finished burning iron and started collapsing. Even though the collapse can reach a quarter of the speed of light, stars large enough to create such an event can be up to 6 light hours across, extending the collapse time to multiple days. We've never observed a supernova yet, but we'll know it when we see it. Even several thousand light years away the event would outshine a full supermoon. And that's without copping a direct hit from the GRB

The worst part about this is we can’t actually tell if a star is going to go supernova to that precise of a timing. We wouldn’t know it was going to go supernova until we see it happen. We can only guess that it would happen within 100 years or so. And because a Gamma Ray Burst would travel at the speed of light we would all die at the same time we see the supernova which means there would be no warning. Just death

A gamma ray burst... For something like this, the star would have to be pretty massive, or fairly closeby... Of course, such would impact more than just the one planet; it would likely smash through the entire solar system, and then some. One thing that is making me pick my brain is that whilst the gamma ray burst would most certainly do a lot of atmospheric damage, the burst would strike and then be gone in a blink of the eye. Any atmospheric damage done would most certainly be on the mend as soon as the burst energy departed. Would it be the end of all living species in that instant? The answer is most certainly not, though what would survive depends on the payload of the burst and how deep it penetrates various solid matter. Inevitably, it would most likely eliminate the majority of all living species in that instant, with what remained either dying later or evolving to survive. The atmosphere is primarily composed of nitrogen; that gamma ray burst better pack a lot of power if it aims to eliminate that entirely (it would take quite a bit), or else, it'd be worth fuck all. Earth would still be habitable, at a 88% chance. Even more so if we get that gamma absorption tech out of testing and into practical application.
