I'm 62... bonded to KISS as a teen (you just can't undo that stuff). What I noticed looking at my playlist (all and only Ace era stuff): KISS songs are nearly 100% upbeat, filthy, clever, funny, catchy, filled with interesting variation... all the band members sing well enough to front their own band, they are all competing to be the most interesting part of the song (Peter's beats are often really inventive and stylish... way underrated drummer). Peter & Ace are punks. Paul is Pop. Gene is metal. Great mix! KISS really was a miracle that ruled the music world for a few years.

No doubt one of the most ballsy, aggressive, easily recognizable styles of any guitarist ever. Ace is so fucking awesome! The shredder boys can learn an awful lot about taste, restraint, and playing what fits a song rather than how many notes you can cram into 8 bars.. seriously he is NEVER not on my top 10 list of fave guitar players! I've been a fan since 1977 (I was 10 then lol) and to this day I totally love what he does. Thanks for this awesome video! I love this series so far!

Ace has always been the technical musician. Kiss never sounded the same after he walked away. Even in the darkest era of Kiss, Ace was still killing it with Torpedo Girl, Save Your Love, etc. In my opinion, Ace's solos in Dark Light and Strange Ways are on a whole level.

Thanks for throwing the love Ace's way, I think you framed it really well. Kiss were sort of never taken seriously by musicians, but you're right, Ace is a huge part of the culture probably because of so many kids being exposed to him at a young age, and I was definitely one. His solos are very restrained and iconic. He through composes them with little improvisation (usually playing the same solo each time), and ultimately each solo is a lesson in economy in serving the song.

Ace's leads and riffs are uniquely his. There are far more technically gifted or faster shredders, but his "tricks" or vocabulary are instantly identifiable and distinct. We all recognize the Les Paul coupled with a Marshall. Many guys can play rings around Ace, but only Ace can create great riffs, memorable leads, and great songs.

Deuce was the first song/solo I ever learned on guitar when I was first starting. All these years I still find myself doing those pentatonic unison bends & double stops like Ace did. It was a great stepping stone to eventually lead into playing Iron Maiden, Ratt, Dokken, Savatage, along with other 80s metal bands, but Ace was a great way to start

KISS ALIVE I was so groundbreaking, so sonically different from anything we'd ever heard before. My best friend called me on the phone EARLY Christmas morning because he got the album as a gift and insisted on playing cuts from it over the phone for me! It was mind blowing. Also after KISS originally went their separate ways I saw all the iterations which were ok but lacking - then I saw Ace's solo tour. THAT was the missing link. It was HUGELY apparent that when it came to sound, Ace WAS KISS. When I saw the 90's reunion tour at MSG with Ace and Peter, I literally stood there and cried because I missed that sound, that chemistry so much. It can't be manufactured. Ace is the key.

Thanks for this Dave so great to see. My parents bought me the Alive album and I was never the same. Saw them live in 77 and 79 in Providence. In a band of characters ace was the one you couldn’t keep your eyes off. A truly unique tone and stage presence. The original Kiss sound was never the same when he left the band no matter who they got to replace him. Gene and Paul still talk today about when they auditioned Ace.. they knew the second he started playing that was the sound they were missing. His solo on Got to choose from the Alive album one of my favorites.

Nice! Great lesson Dave! I just took a gig playing for a Cheap Trick Tribute band in ATL called Dirty Trick. The other day at rehearsal, the drummer asked I could play and sing 'Do Ya' by ELO. I said "Sure" but I like Ace Frehley's rocked up version better! 😊 BTW... after going through 40 Cheap Trick songs in the last 3 weeks, your viewers would probably love a Rick Nielsen lesson. He has so many great solos of songs I didn't even know Cheap Trick wrote! I came into the band only knowing 3 songs! There is a lot of Ace Frehley influence in his early solos! Songs like 'California Man', 'Dream Police', and 'Big Eyes' have some very sonically pleasing/ challenging phrasing for your fans.

People like to rag on Kiss, especially when it comes to flash over substance but it doesn't compute. Once you get past the makeup and theatrics there has to be a solid foundation and that's the music. They wrote some really good songs and that's what is important, the foundation.
