3 Michael Schenker Licks From 2012

Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with '3 Michael Schenker Licks From 2012.'
It was one year ago when I created an early Three-For-All lesson entitled "Three Michael Schenker Licks" and that lesson sparked my idea and overall concept for the entire Three-For-All series that has followed in its footsteps. Since that time I've focused on a wide range of players, but I do feel it was that episode that gave me the overall idea, flow, and basic concept for this series.
To celebrate the one-year anniversary of this concept (which was technically on posted 3.24.19), this lesson is a fitting tribute to this legendary rock and hard rock guitar legend. Michael Schenker is truly a force to be reckoned with and has influenced a legion of guitarists over the years. This includes so many players, but the biggest name (of course) is Randy Rhoads.
This lesson features a handful of wicked licks that came from a live concert bootleg from 2012 in Los Angeles, and the ideas here are challenging and really interesting phrases and runs to study and work through. They range from harmonic minor and Aeolian-based phrases and licks to diminished arpeggios, sequenced scales phrases, and much more.

@@LateNightLessons Dig. I think he was in his prime with McAuley Schenker. They have some great songs and should have been much bigger than they were. I saw Michael and Robin a year ago (or was it 2; time flies) on Michael's tour with a bunch of singers and they sounded great. I wish he had the same tone he used to have with the Gibson Flying V's, though. The Dean is good but doesn't have the same bite as his tone did with the Gibby. I'm a huge Schenker fan as you may guess, and I appreciate these lessons. You're a great player and teacher with a great demeanor. Thanks!

@@hue75 Thank you so much and now I realize I need to go back and dive ever deeper. I'm not sure why I never really spent as much time with those albums, but that gives me a lot of new music and material and listen to - thank you for the head's up. The video/bootleg I found was really just a bunch of clips with Michael's soloing all smooshed together, so it wasn't full songs - just a "greatest licks" (or whatever). So when that clip starts it felt like that was the start of the show and I thought Michael was just going off. After the intro solo, the video cut to another moment/solo from the concert, etc... It was kind of hard to figure out what was what, especially since it was just a bunch of edited cuts from one show. Anyway, that you again and take care! Peace!

His tone on "Strangers In The Night" is one of the best of that era, maybe ever. One of the few to venture out of pentatonics. Still going strong, keep rocking Michael.

Except that he walked into the control room as they were mixing Strangers and exclaimed that they were butchering his beautiful guitar sound. Paul Raymond (RIP) wrote on his old website's biography page "Michael thought his guitar sound was very thin and poorly recorded, and in retrospect I have to agree with him, but - the thing about UFO is the sum of all the parts that make the whole thing work, the synergy between the musicians, but for Michael it was always about his bit. His bit had got to be perfect. It didn’t matter to him if Phil sang out of tune or I played a bum note or something, if his bit wasn’t perfect he wanted to throw it all away and do it again. The rest of the band disagreed. We were quite happy with the recording as it was, and were content to make improvements by EQ-ing it - at which point he stormed out of the room, and never came back for many years."

The true genius here is that he is completely self-taught. I read an interview in one of the guitar magazines years back where the interviewer asked something about his mode choice and how it corresponded to a particular "feel" in one of his songs and he answered something like, "I couldn't tell you where any note on the guitar is so I definitely have no idea about scales, modes or anything else. I just play what I hear in my head." Yeah. Michael Schenker doesn't JUST anything! Haha. I can totally relate to you saying "the appreciation grows". I assume I'm your age, and I grew up with "Coast to Coast" from Lovedrive e.g. but wasn't really into UFO. And even if I got "Strangers in the night", I still couldn't value his playing as much as I do now. Now, after having listened to - I guess - all important rock guitar players, I see how outstanding his tone, his bends and vibrato and his ear for melody is. - I am glad he's still alive and seems to be doing well.

Great lesson again. Schenker is definitely up at the top of great guitarists. I do the same when listening the UFO or any Schenker, I stop what I'm doing and listen to what he's playing. And usually air guitar. Glad Schenker is healthy now .

High school the big three Lights out,Obsession, Strangers in the night and for that matter Lovedrive funny I remember going to Guitar Center to get my first real guitar a Gibson Firebrand SG I wanted a silverburst flying V but it was too much had to settle for the SG not a bad choice but it was because of Michael now I have a year earlier Gibson RD Artist among others Michael is another guitarists guitar player Congrats on your success with your channel David you deserve it 🤘

Old Ghoul ...Same here man ! Bought my first Decent Guitar in 83, A Gibson fire brand SG , Red, I still Have it. Replaced the lead pickup with a Dimarzio PAF. Back in the day, probably 84 or 85, put the Lead pick up later in the neck position of a Black Epiphone Les Paul, and replaced the Lead pickup with a Carvin SD22, It All came together with that one , sounds good, pickups complimented each other.

Another out standing lesson and review David,ty! I saw msg in the mid-80's Michael came out well over 1 hour late, there was no bass player and no vocals, just keys and drums, Michael played though a Marshall 1/2 stack with the v going into a wah straight into the amp, nothing else!(I was front row, directly in front of him) It was hands down the absolute best performance of guitar playing I have ever Witnessed in all my years, spellbinding, supernatural, otherworldly, pure sorcery from another dimension. Sorry, the agor west ballroom in West Hartford CT, they didn't explain it to the crowd but,my personal guess was that maybe there were some personal strife possibly involved? I'm just guessing, Michael came out,I want to say close to 1 1/2 late, the crowd were screaming Fu and it was a really hairy scene in the audience, they were saying Michael has a 'medical' issue but,he is still going to play, haha, when he came out he had like a little kid band on his pinkie and a very sheepish look, the crowd was like screaming murder,he plugged in and within a couple of minutes had them kissing up to him, haha, one the craziest gigs I have ever seen! If I hadn't been there I don't know if I would even believe this story, haha but there you go!

I was heavily into UFO when I was a teenager, and Schenker was definitely an influence on my own playing, along with Ritchie Blackmore and Angus Young. The other guitarist who could really rip live, like Schenker, was Gary Moore. The latter didn't have the harmonic minor stuff in his arsenal, but in terms of "edge of your seat and balls to the wall" excitement, they were peas in the same pod.

"Save yourself" is a kick ass album and the title track is mind-blowing! Back in 1989 when the scene was overcrowded with hundreds of Van Halen and Malmsteen clones, master Schenker taught the world one more time who really was the original shredder! Check out any video from MSG 1990 tour, he was unbelievable, a beast! I've never heard him playing so fast and precise like on that tour, absolutely untouchable! No need for sound effects gear or silly flashy tricks or embarrassing shaped guitars , just his blessed three fingers, his legendary black and white Flying V plugged into the the amp, his wah and that's it, the Man himself in action! The Mcauley Schenker albums are all amazing, they're way above the typical hair metal rock of those years, Michael's guitar playing marks them all! I saw the Schenker fest last year and watching the master playing is always a jaw dropping experience!

Yes! Paying homage to Schenker. The biggest major influence to me outside of Hendrix. One thing you didn't mention is Shenk has the best vibrato in the biz. I fused his incredible phrasing, crying vibrato, mixed with fast ball blues adding G.Moore, F. Marino, Trower and Winter which developed my early style. It wasn't till Gilbert who taught me synchronized playing + out of bounds half bends from Lynch, Friedman, De Martini and even Hendrix (band of Gypsies Fillmore West), plus Yngwie (God bless Yngwei) with his linear playing, sick vibrato that fashioned my newest technique. We're never too old to learn. Lastly I cannot give enough thanks to John Sykes, Norum, Jeff Kollman and Aldrich that all pay homage to Schenker. It is a language that audiences and guitarists know the world over. Thanks so much Dave, for this video showing today's players to the magic that is Michael Schenker.

Schenker is a true Guitar GOD. One of the best lead players ever. The guy who probably sounds the closest to him is Uli Roth (a guitar god in his own right). Listen to things like the Scorpions Catch your Train (and stuff from In Trance and Virgin Killer), and you'll hear similarities to what Schenker was doing. Though they eventually branched off in different directions, in the mid 70s, they were both mining very similar territory with aeolian and neo-classical ideas, and raising the picking technique bar. Both were WAY ahead of their time.

Schenker keeps evolving. The earlier stuff is much more basic blues based stuff. The later stuff is amazing. He’s influenced many players. I think Slash is very influenced by his earlier more bluesy stuff.

Randy fan here checking in... yes I would say the number one influence I think that Michael had on Randy is... live... how Randy would embellish and throw in those fills all the time,never miss a beat jumping back into the rythm... I remember hearing Randy live and I could correlate it with listening to Strangers in the Night Live album similar ideas..

Absolutely! And I know sometimes people become upset when you say "so-and-so copied ideas from so-and-so" but that's what artists do and is completely normal. Michael whipped out some legendary music and Randy was influenced by it. Then Randy turned around and created his own legendary music using some of those ideas as a template or basic guide. That is the way of the arts and music and a normal/natural process. As the old saying goes - "Good artists borrow, but great artists steal." : ) Take care and ROCK ON!
