My 94 year old mother has stage 5 Alzheimers and lives on her own. Mother was diagnosed with MCI in 2014 and has been in decline ever since. Mother lives her whole life in total delusion. She thinks that she can look after herself and her bungalow without any help whatsoever. In reality, mother had carers twice a day for medicinal, meals and light housework tasks. Mother has a cleaner, hairdresser and chiropodist to assist with personal duties. My brother and I are her POA's because mother is unable to manage any of her finantimesces. Mother is deaf and doubly incontinent, yet refuses to wear hearing aids in her home as well as incontinence underwear. She denies that there is anything wrong with her at all times. A recent assessment from a social support worker gave the impression that mother was more than capable of self maintenance. My sister and I had to give the complete opposite story of everything mother said. This is what"deluded"is and there is little sign of it going away or reducing in content.

Isn’t it remarkable that “professionals” give their opinion after a 15 minute assessment and no history or speaking with the caregiver? I put up with 3 years of that BS. What has to happen is a tragic event, unfortunately, and maybe they survive it. Those in healthcare that think they can make an assessment of someone they don’t have a clue about are the delusional ones. I had to go through 4 tragic events before the delusion was broken. Maddening.
