Today’s video covers three anterior shin splints physical therapy exercises that can help you reduce shin splints pain and prevent the issue from coming back. Anterior shin splints are common with runners and typically create pain on the front of the shin.
Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS) or ‘shin splints’ describes a repetitive stress injury of the anteromedial shin region. This issue typically causes pain along the middle-distal tibia that is provoked with exertion.
More recent evidence suggests that this condition is more complex and could be caused by a number of stress injuries, including tendinopathy, periostitis and stress reactions of the tibia.
While the pathophysiology of MTSS may be complicated, the condition typically involves situations where the body is not able to heal due to excessive loading. Following this logic, the vast majority of MTSS cases can be controlled by managing the stress that is being applied to the system. This could include manipulating five major variables:
1. Training frequency, volume or intensity
2. Technique/form
3. Equipment (training surface, shoes)
4. Nutrition
5. Resistance training

Thank you very much for sharing. Sometimes I press with my thumb instead of the ball. You probably don't mind. 6:27 So cute.

Thank you very much for your videos! They are very helpful. Just a comment about what you said about the tibialis working as breaks when we run or walk. As far as I know it is not healthy for the knees to hit the heel first when running. Barefoot runners for example run hitting balls of feet first...

You’re welcome! When it comes to running, there isn’t one gait pattern that is healthy or unhealthy. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Heel striking applies more load to the knee whereas a forefoot strike applies more load the the calf and achilles tendon. If someone doesn’t have pain, we don’t try to change their gait pattern. If they have pain, we may try to shift a bit from one foot strike pattern to another or manipulate other variables such as cadence, shoe type, etc.

Hello, I covered bunion rehab in the book, but did not cover hammer toes as this issue is less common than the other conditions I included in the book. Here is a book link if you want to learn more. Rehab Science: How to Overcome Pain and Heal from Injury a.co/d/9bB4zrN
