Very interesting video. I am one of the lucky ones, male 73 who doesn't have any of the contra indications you mentioned and by doing the Asian squat multiple times every day my flexibility and strength has improved. Before I do any Asian squats for the day I always do an exercise similar to what you showed holding onto the stair banister. My ankles are now much stronger and their improved flexibility has made a notable difference in my walking. If you can work on the Asian squat without the concern of the contra indications you mentioned I would highly recommend it. Being an avid cyclist helps too as cycling is a great sport for your health. The key for most people is to stay active early in adulthood and never stop.

I often thought that, as I hiked 800 miles of the PCT at age 70, no one ever mentioned that the most practical requirement for trail fitness would be the Asian squat as required on those early morning potty breaks. It became very comfortable at some point, but it took a while.

If no pain just keep practicing. Use her alts and work up slowly. Also try a toilet stool (not for peeing) and put hands on knees while sitting fwd to get up. Bonus it’s functional. Then low stools and or kneeling she showed on firm bed if easier then floor for now. Work on muscles used to stand up w/mini squats. Search Margaret’s name and them on YT or see her playlist.

Since you're focusing on calf muscles, make sure you work the opposing muscles or you will be unbalanced and it'll cause pain. Sounds like you need to do toe raises to strengthen your tib muscles. And your glutes. ALL THREE. and quads.

Not just the Asian kids, but every kid in the world does deep squat!! Just in the wester culture , the kids grow up and never squat, goes with electric roller, play on video games. I had students in twenties, who were not able squatting their own body weight . So, parents keep up asking your growing up kids to keep up play outside, and squat !!

☝🏽I was hoping someone would comment on this. No need to show an actual Asian baby accomplishing this. In fact, I find it amusing that it’s even referred to as “an Asian squat.” It’s just a full squat with heels on the ground. Any human can do it, with practice. And many people around the world do, not just Asians. But the instructions were great for those of us who can’t do it ( &, er, I am Asian lol).
