When I get cramps it’s always because I have let myself become dehydrated. If I drink water with salt in it, I do not get cramps. One quart of water with one teaspoon or more of salt (I like that Celtic sea salt). If it’s hot and I’m physically working all day I might need two quarts of this water. My naturopathic doctor told me about using salted water. I also take magnesium and potassium.

Magnesium glycinate is highly absorbable, making it effective in preventing muscle cramps by supporting proper muscle function and relaxation. You may be following all the exercises your physical therapist recommends, but targeting the root cause, like magnesium deficiency, is key to fully addressing cramps.

I appreciate this video. I figured out for myself that a massager helps relieve a cramp. In nursing school we were taught to never massage a calf which could lead to dislodging a clot and result in a PE. Has there been a change in this thinking? Massage seems to be the only thing to help, which can be severe at times.

I'm 82, have been suffering from severe leg cramps at night for many years, mainly I think caused by statins taken for lowering cholesterol. So painful I had to get out of bed and walk around the house for at least half an hour for it to ease. Recently after a bad attack I started taking two paracetamol 500mg tabs at bed time. Result, no more cramps. After two weeks I cut down to one tablet and still no cramp. An easy, simple fix for me, you may be different but it's worth a try.

I've learned to do these things after years of excruciating early morning calf cramps, and they're pretty rare these days. I sit on the edge of the bed and massage a few drops of castor oil into my calf muscles, and my calves have lost that tight, tense feeling, becoming softer and pain free. The heel stretch is the get me out move when I get a cramp, but I also do them regularly, day and night. As well as staying hydrated these things have greatly reduced, but not totally eliminated my night-time calf cramps. If I do get one I immediately stretch my heel out and the cramp goes. The after pain is greatly reduced also.

I have more to share, one I always put a bottle of menthol ointment by the end table and if it cramps I will immediately run a few drops penetrating deep onto the affected area, the cramp will go away in a minute. If it is the calf that cramps, stick out the heel to the extend, or just simply get up and stand on the ground. About massaging, you can sat on the sofa/chair and put one foot on the foot rest, use the heel of the other foot to rub the shin muscle, or you can cross one leg and rub the shin muscle on the knee of the other leg. Or simply rub the shin muscle onto the shin bone of the other leg. These all help to massage oneself and work. One more tip, try lift one leg and rub the heel on the thigh of the other leg, you will experience so much comfort while watching tv. There’s more to explore how to use intervals of the two feet onto each other for tense muscle relief using tv time. I’m sure anyone trying this out will find more tricks using the bones of one foot to relieve the stress on the other one. I’ve done this for years, it’s quite addictive though, it’s just a free massage session nightly
