Keep in mind that when getting struck by a warhammer you will end up with more glancing blows than straight on hard resistance penetration like that. Shields are made to also deflect/angle the blows away so that it doesn't take a lot of damage and your hand doesn't get hit with the weapon and/or the vibration of the impact.

Let me just say some things about the shield. First of all you used a crossbow when typically at the time of swords and shields you'd be going up against regular bows or like old fashioned wooden crossbows at best. Second you were much closer than you'd normally be when using a bow so the shield is automatically going to do worse than normal. Finally a small shield like that is more for melee combat than for protecting against ranged weapons like arrows. So overall the shield is probably much better than the tests made it seem.
@tannerchaffin92352 жыл бұрын
I truly don't believe that it is meant to be an actual shield against anything. Thing looks like it's made of ABS plastic, a sheet of plexiglass with a handle would be similar. Seems like it's just a novelty to me.

The thing about historical soldiers who used shields is this: if they were expecting a volley of arrows, they typically would advance with tower shield, which would be held so they overlapped. A small round shield like that was really just for blocking an opponent's melee weapon. However, if it did catch an arrow or crossbow bolt, odds are the soldier had some kind of gauntlet (even if it was just leather) which would help protect his hand. If he was holding it close to his body when the shield was hit, again, he'd have some kind of armour on which would also increase his protection. If he was wealthy, he'd be wearing mail which was designed specifically to stop stabbing weapons.

I know I’m a bit late to the party since this video is 3 months old but I figured I’d offer insight on the shield. There are uses today for shields. I participate in a historical fencing club. It’s a fairly populated sport and has its own tournaments and events. While I mostly use longsword we also practice with other weapon systems such as saber or sword and buckler. That targe there would be used for the sport. I looked it up as I am familiar with Cold Steel Armory (my club has some of their training rondels). It says it’s for training with non steel weapons, so mostly 3d printed or other synthetic training swords. It’s a practice targe for historical sword fighting. Assuming you’re using non steel training weapons it works well and will last a while. Another note, since you talked about hitting people with the brim; that’s definitely a dangerous way to use a shield. Even through the heavier duty gear we use (our helmets are similar to sport fencing helmets but stronger) it could still concuss someone. Those helmets are built to withstand hits from steel feders (they do flex to absorb some of the hit) but the edge of a shield can be seriously dangerous regardless. Just thought I’d add some info since I’m familiar with using these things
