Fun fact- The putty had fibers for a reason. The “jelly” most likely a petroleum product keeps the flame longer due to consistency and its ability to slow burn just like a sterno. When you light a sterno you light it from the wick not the jell. This is the same premise as a sterno essentially. If you exposed some of the fiber and lit them it would have started right away. 🥳

The fire paste, you're supposed to kind of pull it apart to get the fibers exposed and light those. It burns way better that way. I used to make that using cotton balls and petroleum jelly. Works like a charm when you do it right.
@Jexorz86
@Jexorz86 3 жыл бұрын
It also helps to get something that isnt made out of inferior materials and will not burn super fast... Though jelly burns quite a bit longer than good lighter fluid (i think a good zippo is still better if you have a capsule for fuel)
@zachaliles

@@Jexorz86 plus the jelly keeps longer. I'd make batches that fit inside Altoids tins and throw a few in my pack before a camping trip. It can even get wet and still light reasonably well. Oh, and you can substitute cotton balls for dryer lint.

@@srooster4410 they're all basically the same thing and work the same way. It doesn't matter if you buy the cheap stuff or the expensive stuff. It's some kind cotton base coated in petroleum jelly. Pull a chunk off, pull it apart a bit to spread the fibers and light it. The more cotton you have in it the longer and hotter it will burn. Great bit of kit for your camping/survival bag.

I like that tent. It's the kind of thing you can just leave on your bag when camping, and as long as you always have your bag (you should), if you get lost or can't return to camp or something, you have all sorts of emergency usage of of that. You can make a big, super visible signal with that and a fire, use that as an extra blanket around your sleeping bag if it suddenly drops 10 degrees outside, and it uses very little space folded. 10/10.

Everyone is talking about pulling apart the fibers, the obvious issue is that you had the winter blend when it was 110 degrees in your garage and it's clearly summer.
@Semiflat1
@Semiflat1 3 жыл бұрын
He does need to pull the fibers apart. The different “seasons” it refers to is the temperature range it holds together at. I.e. a summer blend would be hard as a rock in colder temps and a winter blend in high heat will be way to mushy and soupy.
@daterrell1
@daterrell1 3 жыл бұрын
@@Semiflat1 my initial comment was supposed to be sarcastic and that's why I said that about the fibers (I'm aware the fibers need to be spread out) but after a quick review of the product I realized I may actually have been on to something. 90 degrees F is what the winter version is rated too but I'm not an expert on how it breaks down the product and how ineffective it makes it. Excellent point though.

The key to those matches is to make sure the fiber is actually in the groove your striking the match on. Since it indents where you strike it, the fiber will not catch a spark if it isn’t cradled between the two walls of the indent.

Here's some things that work great for firestarters: Cotton balls covered in petroleum jelly (dryer lint can also be used instead of cotton balls) If you're really struggling, get one of those things that's a small bit of magnesium that you shave off and light that. That stuff burns and water won't even put it out. Best for if you are in a wet area with no dry wood. Get a decent amount of magnesium, light it, and you're good. It'll dry the wood and set it on fire real quick

That's one benefit of the fibers. You supposed to light a thin part up, going for the fibers make it very easy to do. Their main use seems to be to make it flammable but it's also very beneficial for starting the light easily.

It’s a space blanket tube tent. A rather cheap one. Having said that, with a bit of common sense it would probably make a reasonable foul or cold weather hammock cocoon shelter, although special care would be needed to minimize condensation. Even as a ground tent condensation would be a concern. It does seem to be slightly more durable than a cheapie emergency kit space blanket and it’s much larger.

for the putty, definitely thin it out and even make the surface as rough as you can. fire likes edges and rough surfaces because they have more surface area compared to volume.

Pyro putty works like tinder. That's why there are fibers in it. A thinner airy layer works better because it has more room for the oxygen to fuel the flame

Why would "emergency" food rations require boiling water? Kind of defeats the purpose of it being for an emergency.
@fromfin90
@fromfin90 3 жыл бұрын
yes and no, water is important, you die faster without water than without food, so you could find a river or similar, boil and purify the water and use the rations

Most MRE bags have a heating element in them
@jkalash762
@jkalash762 3 жыл бұрын
@@theschwiftyman8840 yep or they simply don't require heating at all. There's a surprising amount of them that still don't have any sort FRH that would benefit from being hot in terms of taste though. I've got to say I've never seen any require boiling water to prepare till now either and it does seem strange in a survival situation where water could be a very hard to come by resource depending on where you're at.
@tylisirn
@tylisirn 3 жыл бұрын
@@jkalash762 If you don't have access to water you shouldn't be eating MRE type food anyway. Your body uses up water to digest proteins into energy. That's one reason why the extreme survival rations are almost pure carbohydrate (burning carbs creates water).

Those personal a/c are meant dry areas where there isn't a lot of humidity. High humidity areas it would make feel hotter, because it's adding humidity to the air

If it's like the as seen on TV stuff in the USA those are personal AC is useless. It just blows air through wet filter. Could get the same effect with a fan and a damp towel

Decades ago I found a good fire starter. Just take an old fashioned wooden pencil and put it into a sharpener. The finely ground wood and graphite mix starts quickly from a flint & steel spark. I used to empty the manual rotary pencil sharpener at home and put the shavings into a waterproof plastic bottle. I still carry this in my survival kit. Best part- its FREE!

Lighter fluid leak out or evaporates like what happens with Zippo lighters, of your life depends on it might wanna stick with reliable items stick matches dipped in nail polish or butane lighters with a small container with cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly for instance.
