I must say that all these instruments and boards are very niche and quite expensive, so it’s often unclear what they actually do. Especially Monome beasts. I believe there are cheaper setups that allow to make nice ambient tunes. Good subject for research

My love of ambient is well documented (literally my only vintage gear is a Poly 800 because of Gigi Masin) so this was an easy sell; but I'd never thought about any of the equipment shown being used in this context, which is so exciting! I had the Strymon Nightsky to do stuff like this with, but then it became very clear to me the NightSky has 'that sound' that you can only really use once or twice. I ended up returning it. for ambient, I have been eyeing something like the Poly Digit since it's so expandable, and can do more than just reverb for the same price as the Nightsky.
@Lorneplumber3 жыл бұрын
I much prefer anything strymon over the polydigit
@NoiseToMost3 жыл бұрын
@@Lorneplumber normally I would agree, except that nightsky really only does that one sound, almost for $500 it’s a very expensive unitasker. If you have that kind of cash cool. Poly digit also has massive modulated octavized reverb sounds and all of its other capabilities. Nightsky is a beautiful one trick pony. Sorry.
@Whiskeyklone3 жыл бұрын
@@NoiseToMost If anyone says they are getting one sound out of a Nightsky, it isn't the reverb unit that is the problem. Countless demos on here, well, demonstrate its range. If one is incredibly reductive, it could be said that it has three core "sounds" (standard reverb, massive reverb, seqeuenced reverb) but with a massive range of different sounds in each them. Borrowed one for a week from a friend when it came out and it wasn't enough to justify the price for me, but to call it a one trick pony is nuts.
@NoiseToMost3 жыл бұрын
@@Whiskeyklone hey I can’t wait to hear your creative genius with it. IMO certain devices nudge you in a direction and Nightsky heavily nudges you into the massive space reverb. It leaves you wanting the the flexibility of Bigsky, and at nearly $500 I think all of its other offerings are not as versatile or all that worth the price tag. When you aren’t using for massive space reverb, it’s just kind of a normal verb…Bigsky is a better all around verb. The sequencer on the nightsky was not as fun or usable IMO. So please share your creative genius using it. Even if you crush it with the space verb, and the sequencer, how many times are you going to do that? To my broader point, this one device has a sound that you can’t really use a lot, it’s a unitasker, maybe in BlueSky price and form factor. The value proposition as-is is low IMO. When there are devices out there that do similar sounds and so much more like Poly Digit or Zoia for the same price.
@NoiseToMost3 жыл бұрын
@@Whiskeyklone and IMO you proved my point, if it was AMAZING it WOULD have justified the price. The fact that you weren’t compelled to drop almost $500 on it proves it “wasn’t enough” which is exactly my point.

Could you maybe suggest or even show us some cheap setups to start out with? Like under 1000 EUR kinda setup maybe. Something that is simple enough to not be discouraged, but also have the potential to teach us how to make electronic music.
@ElectronisoundsAudio3 жыл бұрын
Love This One! ❤️❤️
@wickeddubz3 жыл бұрын
Nice and exotic setups. For all my dudes with limited gear suppliers and tight budget: you don’t need crazy amount of money to make cozy ambient. Textures? I’d take tape recorder with half speed feature + modded monotrons. Sequencer with random or semi random notes? Circuit, volca drum, volca Sample with Pajen’s fw, polyend tracker, Elektron devices, etc. Good atmos? Volca FM can give good tones, MS70CDR and kaosspad mini 2s are sufficient for fx, processing and additional sample playback. For some reason, cheap gear often gives more instant fun than expensive one. Also, if you have ipad - there are many affordable apps that are designed for generative and ambient music. Few apps - good to go.

I don't know how people can get by with 40% keyboards like the Vortex Core shown in the video. Even on my 65% models, the chording and Fn layers get a bit cumbersome at times. It seems like a neat solution for a tiny synth setup though.
@elinpiel94393 жыл бұрын
That keyboard drives me completely insane. But I’m to vain to switch. 😣😅
@ToyKeeper3 жыл бұрын
@@elinpiel9439 I've tried a lot of keyboards over the years... from minimalist to maximal, from tactile to flat, staggered rows, staggered columns, grid, split, joined, rectangular, odd-shaped, etc... even wrote firmware for a couple. My favorites have all been in the 65% to 75% range. The main ones I use daily are a Whitefox and a NK65. I forced myself to use a staggered-column butterfly keyboard for a year, because I felt like I had to give it a fair chance... but even after getting as accustomed to it as possible, it still seemed like a downgrade. So my exotic models sit in storage because they just weren't as practical. Traditional rectangular staggered-row layouts get a bad rap, but the design is actually pretty good.
@jameshamilton20153 жыл бұрын
I love my vortex core.. I have a kinesis which took a while to get used to but I always end up back with the core.. compact for programming, use it all day everyday! You’ll get used to it. To be honest I can’t go back to normal keyboards without trying to set up the same combinations like arrows in the home row..
