Feel unsteady climbing up or going down the stairs?
In this video you'll learn the exercises you need to master to have better balance on the stairs. You are not alone in feeling unsteady on the stairs. It can be common, especially with knee arthritis, hip arthritis, ankle arthritis, limited mobility, joint stiffness and/or joint pain.
The good news is, there are solutions to this problem that can help you skyrocket your confidence on the stairs! Join Dr. Alyssa Kuhn, physical therapist and osteoarthritis specialist as she shows you the top 3 exercises to get started on improving your stability and strength on the stairs.

When it comes to building better balance on the stairs, you first want to understand why you are feeling unsteady. Is it stiffness, weakness, instability, fear, pain when putting full weight on one leg? A combination of some of these?
If you are looking for ways to improve your balance, you've come to the right place. Remember, consistency is key to improving stability, reducing pain and increasing mobility- especially with arthritis.

My issue isn’t “confidence or weakness” per se. I have “Neuropathy” in both feet/ankles (the left is SUBSTANTIALLY WORSE) and I CANNOT “FEEL” my feet “making contact with the ground”!! I ALWAYS have to “have my cane handy” OR use a “hand-rail” (when available) as a “safety net”; just in case my foot/feet “give out” due to the lack of “feeling”!! ☹️ (I also have “necrosis” under both kneecaps.) Is there ANY WAY to “re-train my brain” into BELIEVING my feet ARE “touching the ground” while walking, climbing stairs, etc.?? Fun Fact!! 🤭 I “practice ‘Roadside FST’ tests” at home, to help “improve my balance and strength”. However, I HAVE to “first and foremost”, start by “gently and alternately” “pressing my toes and feet ‘into’ the ground” several times. This “tells my brain” that my feet ARE “actually ‘there’!!” 😂 Catherine, Florida ✌🏻❤️👊🏻 Peace, Love and Respect!!

Thank you. I live in a third floor walk up, I will be using the steps in the hallway to do these, don't worry they are very high and lots of walls to support. Your videos are super helpful. Yesterday as I came out of the library, there was a woman laying the ground and yelling "HELP" she had stumbled from the curb and fell, we call an an ambulance and she was being taken care of when I departed the scene.
