323 was rebadged here in OZ as the Ford Laser TX3 Turbo, same powertrain, AWD but body looked different not bad actually like most rebadged cars. The last TX3 turbo gen was what you guys call an escort but was a ford laser here in Australia based on a Mazda 323 and was a liftback. Also wheres the GTIR Pulsar?

Here in Australia, I was almost going to buy a Mazda 323 SS(?) (which was the earlier twin-carb version), but couldn't quite afford the one the dealer in their showroom! Neither was I going to be able to cough up the horrendous insurance premiums for being under 25 yrs old back then!

If Chrysler has though about it, the platform underpinning the Talbot Sunbeam could've been for the Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon that came out in the US that same year, in 1978. The 323 hatchback has a very nice design, making airflow easier over the back, with the spoilers, rerouting down force.

I drove a 323 GTX (in stock trim) at an autocross. It may have been a great RALLY car...but the street version was too heavy, a bit ponderous, underpowered (for it's weight), it understeered FAR to much....and turbo lag was a problem. I was very enthused about driving one (because I was a Mazda guy at the time). A local Mazda dealer brought a couple of them and a few other cars to the autocross...for promotional purposes (of course). I was thrilled - until I drove one. NO thanks - and that (along with the other stuff I mentioned) is exactly what I said to the dealer's guys. I was (and still am) a lover of hot hatches. But, I found that, at least in the US market, EVERY car that fell into that category was over-featured, too heavy and missing certain items needed for good performance (such as great brakes). "Over-featured" means too many silly features for such a car, such as power locks & windows, sun rooves, etc., etc. Those bits are STUPID on a hot hatch. The essence of the hot hatch is supposed to be practicality, combined with sporting appeal, at a cheap price. LIGHT WEIGHT is VERY important. You can't get that with all manner of gee-whiz junk added.

Are you talking about the 1.6L BF chassis GTX from the late 80's? I havn't driven one of those. There's 2 generations of the GTX. The second one being the BG chassis with the 1.8L in the early 90's. This version never got sold in the U.S. as far as I know. There's also a further upgraded BG version called the Familia (323) GT-R which utitlised a bigger turbo, bigger brakes, front intercooler (GTX had side mount) & racer body styling. Then came the BG GTAe which was a lightened version of the GT-R. That had no power windows, no aircon, non powered wing mirrors, & got a close ratio gearbox. The info in this video isn't very accurate about the GTX. It's all intermingled (like they were all the same car model) with the info on 1.6L BF, 1.8L BG, 80's/90's & doesn't specifically mention the GT-R but shows it's in video/photos.

Familia Sport 4 is a prototype so most likely just one ever made. It was being made for Group B rallying before that got cancelled. Might be still around in a Mazda warehouse somewhere, actually being forgotten about. Some of the styling ideas went into the Group A homologation Mazda Familia GT-R. Like the restyled bonnet vents for & spot lights front bumper example.
