This video is embarrassingly inaccurate. 1) It is physiologically impossible to go into anaphylactic shock as a result of a tarantula bite (due to the structure of the peptides). There is also not a single documented death attributed to a tarantula bite. 2) Grammostola rosea (the Chilean rose tarantula) is an arid species and has the same care requirements as the Aphonopelma species he is recommending...do not keep them "a little more humid." 3) Tarantulas will not drown in a water dish. Sponges breed bacteria/mold; don't use them in a tarantula enclosure.

Bryan Grim Assuming you want to optimize the well being of your pet, then no, captive husbandry is not subjective. Tarantulas - particularly the New World terrestrials - can *survive* in sub-optimal environments, but will not *thrive.* The best book on the subject is Michael Jacobi's "Tarantulas." I'd also encourage you to check out the American Tarantula Society forums and Facebook page.

You don't need a sponge, that just promotes mold. They're not going to drown in a shallow water dish. They drink with their mouth parts, and their book lungs are located far away from their mouth. Also rose hairs lobe in the desert, and scrublands of Chile. The water dish will keep all the humidity they need. They don't like the humidity too high.

Just an FYI, the tarantula keeping community has generally shifted away from keeping the Chilean rose hair (Grammarstola rosea) as a beginners tarantula. Lots of people find their specimens to be more temperamental and aggressive compared to other species. Brachypelma hamorii (formerly B. smithi) AKA Mexican red knee has become the new stereotypical beginner's tarantula. It's important to note that every specimen has a unique temperament. Any species can be aggressive, and some infamous species can have docile specimens. I don't necessarily recommend handling, but if you choose to handle your spider, always test their mood with a soft paint brush and watch their body language. Never handle your spider if it is skittish or in a threat pose.

Spiders that are reluctant to bite. That sounds quite awesome. The only problem is, no way I'm going to handle any insects to feed to them. I usually let spiders roam the house so that they can kill insects for me, so that I don't have to run into those insects in the first place!!
@headrockbeats10 жыл бұрын

Well if you feed it crickets, you dont have to worry about biting and you can use tweezers or some kind of device to pick them up (sounds mean but you are killing them anyway so you know, ....not that mean,).

wampaAWESOMEsauce Not worried about biting, insects just give me massive creeps. I like mantises, but I certainly won't feed them to a spider. Most other insects are... yeeeccccchhh.
@chattacoochi10 жыл бұрын
Headrock You're scared of crickets? Really?
@headrockbeats10 жыл бұрын
Kaylyn Z Most insects. It's not a rational fear, can't help it. Something about the way they move, like I feel they're going to jump around and get under my clothes or whatever. That's why the bigger omnivores scare me because of the erratic movement. If I see a cockroach, for instance, I have to suppress the urge to scream like a little girl, and then run to get the insecticide - and I don't relax until I am 100% sure that it's dead. :/ Big arthropod carnivores though, and especially the slower and deliberate ones, don't scare me at all. I love spiders, mantises, crabs, etc. Scorpions are obviously scary, but for completely different reasons (around here, they will kill you).

Luis Rosario actually he's not that expert. The way he grabbed the desert tarantula is a no no for an expert breeder. New world tarantulas has urticating hair that they will flick if they got startled and you know best way to startle a tarantula is by grabbing them like that. The sponge in drinking cup and about the heat pads he was recomending is actually bad for tarantulas. Tarantula doesn't need heat pad because it can cause them dehydration and if your comfortable with the temperature usually most tarantula is also comfortable with that temperature. All the tarantula breeders I know don't use heat pads. Tarantulas unlike mammals only breed if they are really healthy and well taken care off.

Mexican red knees are pretty notorious for being docile and slow, so you could handle it. If you do, though, just remember that a fall of just a foot can be lethal to the spider. overall, handling puts unnecessary stress and risk on the animal, as they don't need social interaction. Handling is solely for the owners benefit.

I was thinking about getting a Mexican red knee tarantula. Are they simple spiders to take care of?
@samlightfoot177110 жыл бұрын
Hey Jungle Bob! I've also been looking for a pet tarantula, a friend told me that Mexican Red Knee tarantulas were also good for first timers. He said they were just like rose hairs in terms of temper but that they can be slightly more irritating to the skin. Are they really good for first timers or should I go with a rose hair?

I am definitely considering getting one. I'm very mature when it comes to handling species such as tarantulas. My mom is still kinda on the fence about me owning one but if it was up to me I would've had one years ago haha.

Hi, I was just wondering if you knew something about the "Monocentropus balfouri" can be a good one for a fairly newbie or any info about it's temprament would be VERY apriciated... Love your videos by the way :-)

The mexican red knee seems to get a lot of thumbs up for beginners. One of the most attractive too, in my opinion. :)

yes, the Brachypelma albopilosum (curly hair) is a really calm spider. mine never flicked any hairs or gave a threat posture. Really awesome beginners spider . Keep dry substrate, a waterbowl and a plant(or mos) for the humidity, one cricked/grasshopper per week and your good to go. Its a low maintenance, easy to keep and docile Tarantula

Is a Mexican Redknee a good one for beginners? How friendly are they?
@shoganflamemasta39757 жыл бұрын
So if a want to raise a spider does it have to always be a tarantula specie? Aren't there other as safe options? Btw, I really want to know this. Could I capture one of the hundreds of spiders there are in my house and take it as a pet? I would be saving mony. The problem of course it's the identification of the spider, I'm no enthomologist and have no clue about spiders yet. I have very tiny spiders that eat the ball insects, I don't know what you call them in english or if they are common there. They are similar to a centipide but much much smaller, and roundy, when they fear something they curl up into a ball. And then I have considerably big spiders in some places, I never got to see them eating, or hunting would be more appropiate, and what seems to be the bigger of them all, I never got to see more than her long black legs peeking from her house. I have spiders everywere, I'm looking at a little one in a corner right now as I write this comment, it just seems a waste to buy one.

They're great for beginners, and won't bite unless you REALLY get them upset, which is kinda hard to do unless you throw it or something. Instead of biting, they have urticating hairs that they'll flick at you, which can cause redness and irritation to your skin. I really recommend them though!

This is a great video, very informative. I've heard that the Rose is the best way to go. I used to have a fear of spiders when I was younger but now I would like to have one as a pet. Watching this gentleman handling them they seem 'harmless'* and even a little cute.
