In this weeks Adventure Motorcycle riding tip our ADV instructor Daniel Sedlak breaks down three very common mistake that we see motorcycle riders make when they are transitioning to riding off road.
All of our Adventure Motorcycle training videos focus on building good technique and these three mistakes can be fixed easily.
Mistake 1: Using too much front brake. Speeds are a lot slower when riding off road so it is really easy to over brake on the front brake. We recommend using your index finger only to regulate your brake pressure and focus on learning to control the rear brake early on.
Mistake 2: Downshifting early to use the engine brake. Downshifting early will destabilize the bike especially when you are riding softer terrain. Get used to riding a higher gear and use your clutch and brakes to control the motorcycle.
Mistake 3: Not standing up properly. A lot of new adventure riders aren't 100% comfortable standing up correctly and find themselves in a very compromised position on the bike. Make sure to practice standing up in easy terrain before you try to do it off road.

I've been practicing/using your stand-up technique, and it has greatly improved my off-road control. I live near the Blue Ridge parkway in Virginia, and i ride a lot of dirt roads, fire trails, and Forest roads with sharp turns and elevation changes (often at the same time). Your techniques work, and I really appreciate your help and advice. Thank you. Ps, I've taken an off-road class, and it didn't help me nearly as much as watching your videos and practicing your technique.

Your tips help a lot. I’m confident standing and riding uphill and medium downhills, but not confident on steep singletrack downhills. 23 KLR adventure, so I’d also like to hear tips on riding a bigger, bulkier, heavier bike on harder singletrack or cross country. Thanks! You’re probably saving lives and injuries with these videos, and love the FXR gear.

Thank you. The foot position advice really helped me get through attaching with the bike and foot peg foot placement.. Confident standing uphill, but not feeling the same going downhill, can you please let me know where and how to improve.. Would love your thoughts..

I am strughling to keep the ball of my left foot on the foot peg on my BMW GSA 1250 as the center stand interferes with the heel. if I still somehow keep the ball my left foot on the peg, my left heel is bouncing on the center stand end pushing it down and I am scared to push it further down while making left turn by pushing the heel down. What is the remedy to this situation?
