Another big mistake is not spending enough time on the piece you’re working on. The painting isn’t bad, it’s just not done yet.

I took my time on a painting and it was roughly a week spent on a very small canvas. I haven’t painted in about 10 years, but I took my time, looked up some videos, redid a few things and it turned out cute!

I agree with your first point particularly. One of the problems for beginners is the tendency to get small tubes of paint. Psychologically it can be very difficult to squeeze out half a tube in one go as it feels wasteful. I know this from personal experience. I had a 20ml tube of raw umber, I had it for years because I couldn’t bring myself to squeeze out half a tube. To make it even worse, it was a free sample, so cost me nothing! Eventually I forced myself to use it. This is why I always encourage people to get decent size tubes, there is not the same stress coupled with a larger opening forcing you to put more paint out.

👍, I just bought 1 kilogram of titanium white (acrylic) since it was not available for some weeks, supply chain problem, I think, now I’m safe for awhile 😄, thank you for the video, though I watched it before - have a nice evening Katie 🙏😊

I have been doing watercolor since Covid. I’m about to take my incomplete acrylics out of the closets and start completing them. So less water more paint. I will try that. Thanks Katie for your examples

Such good advice about references, in the future I will refuse to feel guilty about using them. Now I will combine several for one painting..

Thank you Katie for your great tips! I am guilty of holding back when I squeeze out my paints. Something that has been helpful to me is to step away from the painting. Sometimes a painting I think is awful, looks great the next day! It ends up only needing a few tweaks instead of a complete makeover.

We also don't know when to stop. An art mistress at school about 60 odd years ago said that I sometimes spoiled a painting by overworking it. I wasn't satisfied and kept at it beyond necessary. Took me a while to understand that. Thanks for the points you made. I'm guilty of all of them! 😊👍

Would you think abstract paintings also need references?
@KatieJobling2 жыл бұрын
It's up the artist but I would say so yes. Not in the sense to copy it. But inspiration always begins somewhere. I like to use images, colour combinations, fabric swatches etc for my abstracts as I always keep them nearby when painting
