I travel every year to the Black Hills and shoot pics of the buffalo which I absolutely love. Hoping to take my husband to Yellowstone the summer of 2024 for his retirement from the AirForce having served 26.5 yeasr active duty and another 13 years as an AirForce government civilian. Great help for a beginner, thank you so much.

Thank you. Some good tips in there. I was able to get a good capture of 2 bucks in Jackson WY with a wide open F/ and it turned out cool as the buck in the front is tac sharp and the one behind is blurred. We didnt even notice the doe lying in the grass between them till later. 600+ photos taken during Thanksgiving and it was my best and favorite. Almost at 1000! Congrats. Keep the videos coming

Thanks for watching!! Glad you liked it. That sounds like an awesome image, Jackson is one of my favorite places to photograph wildlife. Never done much deer photography there, but they’ve definitely got some big bucks! Thanks again for the support 🙏 have a nice day

@@wattswildlifephoto my wife and I go to Jackson 2 or 3 times a year. We live in Missoula Montana so it is only about a 6 hour drive. Our favorite time is February and take the sleigh ride though the 1000's of elk on the refuge. Last year they said there was about 10,000 head of elk. Of course I was having problems with my Panasonic S1 and most all my pictures were bad. This year I have the Canon R5 so that problem is fixed. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for taking the time to make them

@@mauriceaustin3442 Missoula is beautiful! Not too far from Glacier either. That sounds amazing, I’ve never been in winter before. I’d love to see the elk refuge when they’re all down there. It’s good to hear you enjoy the videos. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on them!

Excellent. I used the M50 with the standard kit lenses for a safari in Kenya and Zimbabwe a couple years ago. I since upgraded to the R5 and the EF 100 - 400 for a recent Tanzania safari and the images are incredibly superior. I’m still learning but have found your videos invaluable. Thank you.

That's great to hear, I'm glad the videos are helping! Tanzania/Kenya, or really just any African savanna in general, is a dream location of mine, I bet those were incredible trips. Thanks for watching 🙏

Big whites (I've got the 800 5.6) by their very design throw the background out of focus. I can see a significant difference in sharpness from 5.6 to 8 and the background looks essentially the same. Unless I'm absolutely out of light I'll stop down even just a LITTLE. I've found it helps. YMMV.

I would lovw to see a video on how to set up the canon Canon R6 or r6 for wildlife photography and store that setup on one of the customs buttons. Your video was intersting but there is a need for a tutorial going through all the settings then storeing them in one of the customs settings.

Thank you for the suggestion, I have a video covering autofocus setup for wildlife on the R5/R6 on my channel, you can find it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXyym4qeeNufkLs As far as all the other settings, I would like to get together a video on that eventually, it’s good to hear there is interest in a video like that. Have a nice day 🙏

Thanks so much for the tips ! Many times I shoot at 7.1 or 8.0 trying to get birds in flight. After I forget to open the shutter back to 5 0 or 5.6 when I find bigger mammels etc. I also use a Canon 1.4 extender on my EF 400 with an R6, but loose stops depending on the light. Do you also ever use a extender ? Best of luck getting to 1000 😎
@wattswildlifephoto

Absolutely, hope you found them helpful! I do use an extender from time to time, but I try not to unless I have to just because of the aperture increase. Thanks for the support 🙏

Is is true that lenses are typically not their sharpest at either end of their extreme? When I use my Sony 200-600 open at 6.3 (at 600mm), it often doesn't seem as sharp as it should. I don't know if ISO is the problem (low light so higher ISO) or I need to stop down, or that I'm just expecting too much and shooting through too much atmosphere.

It depends on the lens, manufacturer, etc, but particularly zoom lenses are known for this. So yes, its possible this could be the cause of the sharpness issues you are having with your 200-600. I can’t speak for the 200-600 specifically as I’ve never used it, but I shoot the EF 100-400, a similar lens in Canon’s lineup, and I have to stop it down to get maximum sharpness. I’d recommend putting it on a tripod and set it at 100 ISO, then stop it down and shoot at 3 or 4 different f stops starting with 6.3 and look at the results. Hope this helps.
