Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Chris Duarte Licks From 2006. Chris is such a dynamic and expressive player and I've been listening to his funky Texas blues-rock music since the 1990s. I've also caught him live a couple times over the years, and once upon a time - he opened for Joe Satriani in 1996 and completely killed it during his sweat-soaked set. That was a great show!
The ideas in this lesson continue the 'Playing With Feel' element that I've added to the Three-For-All series recently, and without a doubt - Chris knows plenty about playing with feel, and routinely displays jaw-dropping levels of energy, dynamics, and expression in his music. From intense string bending and vibrato moves to lightly brushing the strings with his pick/fingers to produce subtle and quiet moments in his music, Chris has it all and has always been a truly unique player on the scene.
Needless to say, playing with feel/dynamics is important for any guitarist in any style, and I've noticed that typically speaking, these basic elements are commonly overlooked/underworked for most players out there - which is exactly what we're tackling in this lesson! So dive on in - this bluesy lesson is what every one needs! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

I went to see Satriani with a friend. While standing around, the lights dimmed and I asked my friend if he wanted a beer. As soon as I started walking away, Chris came out and opened with My Way Down. I stood there the entire set mesmerized. We never got our beers. After, I immediately walked over and bought his CDs. Been a fan ever since and see him every time he comes within 100 miles of me.

Couldn't swear to it BUT, in the late '80's, I believe I saw him at the Minneapolis Convention Center as part of a triple bill with REO Speedwagon headlined by Johnny Winter. He really caught your attention. People asked "Who?' Didn't know it was him until I saw a picture later. I wasn't an REO fan until I saw them. They were dynamic. This was great. There were more great guitar guys floatin' around Texas back in the day. Mason Ruffner was one. He actually made the cover of Rolling Stone Met him, still have his demo. Damn good stuff .. Anyhow.... Texas Thanks You.

Wow - you are killing me - Did a show with him at The Edge in Palo Alto - and WHOA!!! of course - the show was a bloodbath for me, no sales - but I told my boss "this is for me" - and he was cool with that

Great lesson. I met Chris a few times (he often sells merch between sets), and I told him I bought the Axploration DVD. He said he wrote all the dialogue (which is prety apparent if you’ve ever heard him talk). Monster player. My favorite disc of his is Tailspin Headwhack, and runner up is My Soul Alone. He gets into Coltrane influenced territory on some of the jazz inspired tunes. He is a must see live act. His solos get outside, but progress like a conversation, and make sense when you go on that ride. A highly underrated player.

Check out Axploration his dvd. Many cds. And also Mato Nanji when he did live at La Zona Rosa. Chris makes a special appearance. These guys are totally overlooked. They deserve a Fender signature strat not some tik tok unknown player.

Awe man Chris used to absolutely kill it. Hey David check out Mato Nanji. His is a Native from S Dakota. His band is Indigenous and they came out early 2000s. I saw them live once and aside from SRV he is one of the best but most people have never heard of him. Thx David for another great video.

I thought this was me that wrote this. I say the same players. Totally overlooked guitar geniuses. Check out if u haven’t yet and btw Chris is a guest with Mato and family. Live at La Zona Rosa now on utube. Voodoo Chile amazing by Mato. He is a beast on guitar. I think Jonny Lang gets overlooked as well but his voice gave out.

This is great. This will be one of those lessons where I don't know the music or musician, but I'll leave with some new licks and some more new music to check out. I love it dude thanks again. 3 for all Ross Childress from Collective Soul.

I saw Chris in the mid 2000s at a blues bar in Minneapolis. I can’t remember if he had four or 6 amps all playing at once, but it was literally cutting heads. So blisteringly loud! The energy of that show has rarely been matched for me. One of the hardest working musicians I’ve ever had the pleasure to see. I feel lucky I got to see him.

Those were very very smooth man...smart choice of notes. I kinda hesitated for a while to watch this, having my fill of too much Texas blues style riffs already but, yeah man. Thank you David. Awesome how you spot these highlights.

You never cease to amaze me. We saw him in Fort Wayne sometime in 1996. Couldn't make the Mars show even though I think we saw The Why Store there about five times. Good times... Didn't listen to him much other than the Texas Sugar Strat Magic album but it was great and I was never really into the Texas blues thing too much. Still, hell of a player.

I have loved Chris Duarte's guitar playing ever since I heard "Cleopatra" on the radio. (I think it was '97) ...BSSM is a phenomenal album, and you really nail Duarte's approach. Seems to really like slides in and out of b5 notes of blues scale. Does he also favor that move an octave down? (on the "A" string) I'll have to find his complete instructional video, as that's up my alley. I definitely need to pay more attention to my dynamics. Besides blues rock, I also love/play thrash metal, and have taken on Slayer's dynamic of slight shifts from heavy to heavier. Thanks for raising my awareness to the importance of dynamics, and I'm happy I recently subscribed to your channel, as the content is top notch.

I saw him play at a little blues bar called Darwin’s, here in the Atlanta area (Marietta) back in 2006ish. He didn’t disappoint. Haven’t heard much about him since until this video. Sadly, Darwin’s has since gone out of business.
