Jon, August 30, 1990, Seattle WA, Ballard Firehouse. Before your show you came out to the FLOOR of this joint and had Long Island Iced Teas with us. You were just like any other guy and you kept looking at the stage and saying something like "this stuff is going to grenade" or something like that. It wasn't any longer than 20 minutes of fun for us with you on the floor that I won't ever forget. Jon Oliva... on the floor of a Rock bar just drinking before the show as if you were one of us. Never will forget it.

Jon, if this is really you. I was reading your interview with Blabbermouth, and I wanted to offer my condolences for all your recent losses. You’ve endured so much throughout your life that I can’t even begin to imagine. For what it’s worth though, I wanted to tell you that what you, Criss, and the rest of the band did is inspiring and will live on. I’m 20 years old, but I recently discovered Savatage. It astounded me that you guys aren’t more well known. The passion that you put into your voice, and the style Criss developed on the guitar are truly magical. What I wouldn’t give to hear “When the Crowds are Gone” again for the first time, and the cherry on top was when I found out that Savatage started TSO. I guess what I’m trying to say is if you’re feeling down (as life has given you justification to do so), I hope it helps a little to know it wasn’t for nothing. Savatage and TSO are still reaching new people. Hopefully, one day, you, your brother, and the rest of the band will get the recognition you all deserve. Thank you for so many wonderful songs.

Criss had INCREDIBLE legato technique.. had every bit the fluidity lynch had. His bends and picking techniques were also on point... a certain level of emotion in his playing that alot of guitarist couldn't seem to grasp.
@neilpatrickhairless5 жыл бұрын
That came from his background in other styles than metal - I have seen VHS footage of Criss playing acoustic guitar with his brother Jon that I can only really describe as "jazz fusion" and it was terrifying (in a good way) - Buckethead is probably the only guy I can think of that is around now that can go from weird little jazz chords to full on Shawn Lane ultra speed like Criss Oliva could. Maybe Paul Gilbert but Paul and Buckethead still lack Criss' ferocity.

Definitely check out Chris Caffery's stuff & Jon Oliva's band Pain is amazing!! I've seen TSO every Christmas season since 1998. It's a Christmas tradition for my family. Yet another reason I’ve subscribed to your channel, David. Criss was EASILY in the same league as Van Halen and all the rest of them. Although he was undeniably influenced by Eddie and Randy Rhoads, his style went so much further than those two. Throughout the eight albums he did with Savatage, I hear bits and pieces of not only EVH and Rhoads, but also Uli Roth, Michael Schenker, Steve Howe, and maybe even a little Al Di Meola and Terry Kath. Yet despite the numerous influences, his playing always sounded fresh and anything but derivative - and just like Randy, I’m left wondering what he’d be doing now if he were still with us. I’d probably go so far as to say he’s earned a permanent spot in my top 5 favorite guitarists of all time, in any genre. Keep on spreading the word about some of the lesser known guitar greats...your efforts are much appreciated! 🤘🏻
@neilpatrickhairless5 жыл бұрын
Criss was heavily influenced by Schenker and Uli John Roth. I also agree that he took what EVH and Randy were doing and made it a thousand fold more aggressive. There was a very unique measure of prettiness to his stuff that I haven't heard anywhere else, he had a lot of melodic ideas that no amount of technical skill can ever really replicate - you either have that or don't and no one else did.

He really was a great player and I think it was just timing and the fact that their music had more depth and meaning than a lot of that fluffy stuff that was popular at that time. They had grit and chops and were actually writing stories and intense music and I think it was over a lot of listeners heads (at that time). I really respect the fact that they didn't write songs for radio/MTV and were dark and edgy and found their audience and built their fanbase. : )

Love Savatage! His death was a tragedy. Then Jon got Matt to play Chris guitar parts and he was amazing, then Matt died. I love Jon Olivia's Pain records and I hate he has had so much tragedy in his life. Great tribute David. Chris was Amazing. Never forgotten

What made Chriss so great was his counterpoint.

Thanks for sharing. It might be fun to do 3 licks from Frank Marino, Andre Niere, Jeff Kollman, Alvin Lee, Ian Ackerman

Honestly, I never listened to Savatage or Criss Oliva (& I was born in ‘70). I looked up the Wiki on him. WTF?! The guy that killed him had SEVEN DUIs PRIOR to killing Oliva! He only got FIVE years & only SERVED 18 MONTHS! That is ridiculous! His EIGHTH DUI, resulted in a man-slaughter conviction & received five years. Adding insult to injury letting him out after 18 months. Our judicial system is ridiculous! Regarding his riffs, they are pretty cool. I am going to practice them. I’m going to give Savatage a listen.

Criss had a sound all his own. The way he blended blues and metal with all the bends in his runs. So in your face and emotive, just makes you want to smash something LOL. Of course not actually smashing anything Haha

Dude what are you doing? Are you on a mission to mine all the dope, but definitely off the beaten path of 80s metal. Savatage Hall of the Mountain King was incredible. The title song and Strange Wings were simply sublime. The song from the next titled album Gutter Ballet were awesome. It is very very cool you doing all these bands. White Lion Vito Bratta, TNT Ronnie LeTekro, Loudness Akira Takasaki and now Savatage. Keep it up. You are going to garner quite the following of those who dig some of the less listened to. I know everyone on here would have that band to suggest, but I have the best and most killer of a criminally overlooked band...Lillian Axe!!! Check them out or revisit whatever the case is for you. Their self Titled, Love + War, Poetic Justice are so amazing. I think if you have never heard them you will find yourself stunned because it is some great stuff. LILLIAN AXE! Definitely check out the song The World Stopped Turning.

I believe Mick Box from Uriah Heep was Criss's favorite guitarist from what Jon had said. It's nice to see that both you and Leon Todd covered one of my favorite guitarists.
