3 Days Alone in the Wilderness - Fishing, Bushcraft & Foraging for Wild Food

I head to the Coast for a 3 Day Solo Camping, Fishing, Bushcraft and Wild Food Foraging Trip. Using just a hobo handline and minimal gear on this lightweight trip I battle through the elements to catch fish, forage shellfish and seaweed as well as wild camp on 100ft high cliffs and in an ancient forest. This isn't a survival trip, but I did need to "live off the land" during some parts of the solo adventure.

I realize this is an older video and I’m a bit late to the party, but I want let you know I enjoyed this. Your ability to stay positive even during a downpour is commendable. I would require a lot more food, probably because I’m old and out of shape. I did love camping out and fishing 40 years ago but am more of a “camp in” type now. Watching your videos brings back memories and for that, I’m in your debt. I think a major difference between camping in the wild in the U.K. and the U.S. is your absence of wildlife, the size and kinds that could possibly make a meal of you. I wouldn’t go out without a firearm and it’s always better to go with another person. One more thing and I’ll leave you alone. I noticed you have more than one knife, and more than one way to start a fire. That’s very wise. We have a saying for that, it’s “Three is two, two is one, and one is none.” Thanks again.

Dude you should come up to Scotland. Used to live on an island in the west of Scotland and there's woods, caves, beaches and obviously plenty of sea. Perfect combo of sources of food, firewood and shelter. Also a lot to forage even if you aren't roughing it. The piers are a great source of mussels and fishing off of them you can get an arseload of mackerel at the right time of year (not that I ever had). Once saw a guy haul 3 of them on a set of 3 lures, one per hook. If you're looking at a time to go, spring is definitely best.

@@maxjenner3561 Close, Isle of Bute. Smaller but usually less tourists coz there's no mountains. Another bonus being Scotland's right to roam laws which mean that unless explicitly told by the land owner (verbal or via signs), you can walk anywhere and forage all wild produce.

@TA Outdoors. That hobo real. I would consider adding a lanyard on it. I can picture it flying out of your hand one day into an unrecoverable location. You could thread the cord through the bottom of the handle, the hole going through that cork. It would add an extra thing to prevent the cork from coming out, just in case.

Here in Hawaii, we call limpets - 'Opihi. We cook them in their own shells either over the fire on a grill, or nestled right in the coals. They cook in their own juices and are less rubbery that way. They can also be eaten raw right off the rock if need be. Enjoying your vids from Maui, thanks for your hard work in putting them together

Helpful Hint: When done washing your dishes, take them to the fire to dry. A few moments over the flames or coals will kill bacteria from residual food and the sand and water you washed them with. One of the worst things that can happen when in the wild is to catch a bug or injure yourself. As my grandpa used to say, "Better safe than sorry."

Top tip for boil in the bag. Squeeze all the food into the top part of the bag and then leave the bottom end out of the water. That way you can hold the bugger straight away without scolding yourself when eating it. Also put it in as you heat the water, uses less gas than bringing water to the boil them cooking.

Love your videos! Small tip regarding the inflatable mat. If you don't already have one, buy yourself a bivvi bag. Have one myself from Highlander. You roll it out, put your sleeping bag in it, and in your sleeping bag you put your mat. What this does is preventing you from rolling off your mat midnight causing a cold and sore back :) You can also put your shoes inbetween the sleeping bag and bivvi bag so they stay warm and can dry a bit. These are all small "skills and drills" I remember from my short time with the military, and I still use them till this day. Have a good one! KR Jeroen

Those caves are at Windspit quarry south of Worth Matravers, Dorset, Southern England . They are where they quarried 'Portland Stone' for 100s of years. The whole Jurrasic coast is wonderful walking country.

Top Tip! :) If you don't want to take a pillow, or (like me) you forget. Take your fleece or jumper or jacket... Tie a knot in the end of one sleeve (or not, you don't have to), and then stuff the rest of the jacket in the sleeve. stuff all of it for a firm pillow or less for a softer pillow. Works a charm. Try it please Mike if you haven't before.

Fantastic vid Mike. Might be worth pointing out to your viewers some of the things they could get into trouble with if they're not being very discreet when bushcrafting. For instance hand line fishing on fresh water is illegal and will land you with a big fine if you're caught. Other than that; most excellent!

I walked/backpacked the Yorkshire coastline, starting at Spurn Point, a wonderful experience, wild and unforgiving in parts, and, interesting towns and villages too. One thing I always do, is where my whistle around my neck, like a necklace, you never know, and, I tend to use a dry bag to keep my sleeping bag in when ever it's located on the outside of my bag. A stretch of the 'Jurassic coast' on the south coast of england. The exact stretch Mike walks is between Swanage and Worth Matravers. Great if you like climbing, especially in the summer, because it is often the warmest part of the UK where the sun reflecting off the sea and the rock faces heats it right up! A lot of coasteering and Kayaking is done there when the sea is in a good state too.

Well that made great viewing thank you! An older video, but it is in my stomping ground so I had to comment. Unusual for you to have that area to yourself, you are very lucky there. Even in bad weather you often come across a lot of people there. Winspit quarry, which is where you said 'a rock climbers paradise' IS the most popular climbing spot in Dorset as it is good for both beginners and experts, easily accessible with a fairly short walk, sheltered, and a great place to spend the day! If it is not lots of climbers, then lots of walkers pass through, groups of people camp out for a night (as the fire remains are evidence of) and the area is popular for spear fishing. That whole stretch of coastline makes for great walking when it isn't too windy and the sea can be incredibly rough and powerful but with no risk to you on the cliffs. I like the look of the hobo reel as something different, and certainly an interesting thing to make and modify. I have never thought about eating limpets so the info and demonstration you gave was both interesting and practical. Thanks for educating and entertaining us with your videos, long may they continue.

Always makes me laugh when you say "If you're still watching". Of COURSE I'm still watching! Your videos are fascinating, so many tips, and a lot of knowledge. Wouldn't have wanted to be surrounded by all those bats, and yeah, ocean waves are just like a constant roar of thunder that never ceases. Glad you got that good night's sleep on the second night. Bet you ate like a madman when you got home though. Lovely footage of ocean and sunrise. I can't believe you caught that many fish and they were all different types, but so small they had to be released. No, you weren't in survival but again, bet you were mega hungry when you got home with all the hiking and foraging for so little to eat. Wise about always packing extra food with you so you aren't thrust into a survival situation. Really enjoyed. (Tip on the "are you still watching" chuckle I have: I look at the length of the video before I start watching!) Cheers!
