I spent a whole summer out in the middle of nowhere in hot humid weather as a camp nurse and got 2 mosquito bites without using anything. After inquiring I learned they had several bat boxes around the property. Bats apparently really like to eat mosquitos. If you live in the city, this may not work for you but you could always ask your local DNR, or extension office. Also, this year I've used peppermint & vanilla spray and it seems to work but the mosquitoes aren't really out yet here. Thanks for the update!

Jag check your property for standing water sources and get rid of the water. I notice the mosquito you have in one of the videos is an Aedes species. These mosquitos tend to develop in small items holding water around the yard. Check with your local vector control district to see what they can do.

Keep in mind that spraying neem oil around the yard actively endangers pollinators. My wife and I use it for some pests, but we're very careful not to use it near any flowers/pollen sources- and even then, pollinators do land on random leaves, stalks, etc. so are still at risk.

Once a week I empty them, wash the base and refill them. You have to put the bottle top upside down like a funnel. once they are in they can't get out so they will die.

Though you might want to try this indoors, as it may be different. From my experience, I can't have a glass of soda or milk without a lid, without finding one or two mosquitos in it after a while. I also left some clothing dipped in water once with clothing soap, and it attracted quite a few, which was unfortunate in that case. Not saying the traps should work effectively. I have no idea. I'm just saying they might have some effect indoors.

Super simple and little to no cost, learned from a different video, place water where they thrive but add a drop or so of dawn liquid. It makes the water slippery somehow prevents them laying eggs, or causes them to become infertile. Whatever the reason it works for me

This is hilarious to me, because I have been making homemade mosquito traps for years now, and THEY WORK GREAT!!! I use Yeast, Brown Sugar, and Water. That's all!! Except one thing different. I use black construction paper to wrap the plastic bottle. The mixture of brown sugar and yeast produces CO2, which is what attracts the mosquitos (and other insects looking for blood) CO2 oozes from our pores, and from our breath. This mosquito trap works. Im not sure what your problem was/is.
@happytrails2you22 жыл бұрын
I don't think he used all 3 ingredients in one trap. He only used yeast and water, no sugar or brown sugar. You need to add the sugar and yeast to create the CO2.

I didn't catch not even one mosquito with the same trap, maybe it depends on the mosquito type, or maybe the yeast used does not have the component required, the only difference is that I see is that I used regular sugar

With my experience brewing wine it has to be 70 to 86f has to be place in a dark spot and the yeast will eat the sugar and poop out co2 and alcohol but I'd use an are lock so it stays pooping out co2

I've had success with fermented bread once. I caught what must have been a few thousand mosquitoes at least. But I've never been able to consistently recreate that one trap, but it works great on flies and earwigs. edit: Oh! Also, paint or cover the walls of the trap. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark places on hot days.
@johnborges5938 Жыл бұрын
The yeast and sugar provides a lure by generating CO2, but no way to kill the critters. The soap removes the surface tension of the water's surface, which presumably will drown mosquitos that try to light on the surface, but has no attractant to draw the mosquitos in. And the borax solution helps give you whiter whites and more vibrant colors when you do your laundry. Overall I wouldn't really expect a different result from what you got.

90% of all the quick tip videos on youtube are copies of other videos and most of them don't work, or can even damage your appliances or home because. Pro Tip. Baking soda and vinegar work about as well as baking soda and water because the baking soda neutralizes the vinegar. Pro Tip 2. Using oven cleaner of any harsh chemical on a plastic tub will ruin the tub.
@quinnlavoie31864 жыл бұрын
the water and soap trap should be much larger. Your goal with that trap is to mimic a laying pool for the mosquito to lay the larva in. Once the mosquito trays to land on the water due to the soap breaking the water tension it won't be able to land on the water and it will drown. A wheel barrel full of water with some soap mixed in (no bubbles on the surface of the water though) and that will be way more effective than a small bottle of water.

As a certified applicator, I can say that the reason your traps were flawed was because they were not black. Try painting or covering the bottles and construction paper and try again. There's also a product called in2care, which is a black bucket you fill with water and dissolve some type of mycelium that clings to mosquitoes and makes them infertile. In2care is used by football stadiums, amusement parks, and any other large area where a lot of people are. In2care is expensive, but one bucket will work for a block of 4 homes if positioned probably.

I’ve had mild success in the past with cedar based yard sprays, but the only thing I’ve found to be really effective for mosquitoes is putting mosquito dunks in any nearby standing water and on moist soil. (I haven’t done that yet this year…thus the 1 million mosquitos currently in my yard and house.) Also, soap, water, and vinegar work great if you ever have a fruit fly problem in your house.

I myself attract mosquitoes. I do notice that whenever I'm using a tablet, that the light attracts mosquitoes on the face around the eyes. I concluded they're attracted to the light. Which is one of the premises those electric catchy mosquitoes traps work really well when I put a bottle of the yeast sugars solution next to it. So what happens I'm guessing is that the small reverse fan on the catching mosquito is drawing the air smell being emitted from the yeast bottle.. along with the light being emitted and in a week's time I will have more than 30 mosquito caught on the sticky katchy insert. I also noticed that I wasn't being harassed by mosquitoes while using my tablet anymore. So three elements the yeast air along with the light being emitted from the catchy mosquito suction device all play into an effective mosquito trap for me. Hope this helps.

AND I fill (about 2x a night) a hand spritzer full of dishsoap, some e-oils, listerine, witch hazel and it'll drop them once sprayed but I have very soapy (albeit nice smelling) walls and ceilings and bedsheets. But my house is still filled with them. They come in thru the doggie door. So, I put a sheer curtain at my bedroom door (pretend window screen) to at minimize what enters at least my room and keep spritzing.

This made me think that there must be decent traps for mosquitos, so I'll check your update video after typing this comment. :P I feel like my unintentional trap only worked because it was wide open, I don't think a mosquito would have bothered to go out of its way to fly in if I covered the top like these samples.

The dish soap water isn't a lure trap, it doesn't attract mosquitoes, spray it on your grass but not so much you kill your grass (a couple teaspoons in a gallon or more sprayer) and the mosquitoes lands on the grass, getting soap on their bodies and when they go to lay eggs on water the surface tension breaks down and they drown ending the life cycle. A lure trap has to emit something they are attracted to like CO2 but over time and when they are near etc. Borax kills insects but isnt a lure,i wonder what would happen if you used pigs blood or something similar in place of water...would they even be attracted to that? How long? Only more Questions...

You have to cut the top off and replace it inverted. They are landing and flying away. They're built to plant on water and flat away but if they fly through the small opening they will not fly away

I did place the top cut part of the bottle inverted to create a small opening for them to enter.

If you made the trap out of 5 gallon buckets, and put in a pound of sugar and two or three packets of yeast, I think it would be effective. Your traps are putting out less co2 than a mouse. Drill a hole in the lid and insert a pipe so the insects will have to fly down a few inches.

Great videos, thanks for your testing and informed feedback on what works and just as importantly what doesn’t.

these did not work because they were kept in open garden -- where there scents will get diluted and will not attract anything - but the yeast + sugar definitely works within house and where there is not too much light or to much air movement / fan etc - the other two will have to be tried -- even other traps mentioned not effective - are also effective - if no too much open ness = means not the essence carried away or diluted

He didn't use enough yeast so it didn't make enough carbon dioxide.

These traps never really work. I’ve seen other people with big mosquito problems who have had higher concentrates and haven’t gotten results either. But I’m happy to see an example video of your method with exact results as I always love to be proven wrong!
