I struggled with my rescue outside. High curiosity, distractions and pulling made for exhausting walks. He was so good inside where he had quickly learned a dozen commands, I couldn’t understand why walks were so challenging. A local trainer simply asked me “do you work on those same commands when you are outside?” And I said no, because our outdoor focus was to walk. She taught me to work on the same routines outside as this will reinforce his expectations and respect for me in all environments. It made so much sense but hadn’t dawned on me before. It was an amazing transformation.

I’m struggling with my new rescue greyhound outside :( she’s never off-lead (way too fast lol) but she’s reactive to other dogs and scent marking a lot 😩

Agree 100% with all you said . The word you said is PATIENCE. Key word! Something to remember is that destractions can be built in at home and indoors before going outside, and all dogs have different distractions. I once brought my puppy in and trained her inside a pet store while my husband started squeaking toys around her because that was one if her distractions . (that was actually fun too).

I thought my dog was a dream canine companion till I found your channel, but now I can honestly say she is perfect in any situation because she now knows to look to me whatever is going on. You've also helped me so much to understand how to get my daycare dogs to cooperate better too, which in turn helps them be better for their owners. As someone who literally stands around observing canine behavior all day, your approach just makes perfect sense to me. Thank you for putting this amazing content out every week! I hope to carve out some time to join the academy real soon! P.S. I loved the shot with Eileen putting Sully's head in her mouth! I was slightly surprised he let her, but even the other dogs know giants are just big lovers ❤️ My Dane tries to put everyone's head in her mouth it cracks me up! I can just hear her like, "Hey you, guess what? I can fit your head in my mouth" 😂😂😂

I just discovered you !! We have a Shitzu cross and I wish you would address this breed. They are hard to train. She sit mostly I’d she’s not over excited. When she goes feral I’m at a loss. She is 16 weeks old. We are starting puppy obedience school this week. I’ll continue learning from you.

I am learning a great deal from your videos, thanks very much @Will. I'm in South Africa and have a 3-year-old Pitbull who I adopted from a shelter, he is just the most gorgeous dog imaginable but his recall is non-existent, not even food or praise can get his attention when something distracts him although I do now have him walking beautifully on his lead (except when there is something to sniff at which point he stops dead). Despite the massive number of Pitbulls in shelters and the desperate need for people to better understand this amazing breed, I cannot find any trainers in my area who are even prepared to talk to me. They don't even bother to say they don't work with Pitbulls they just stop responding to messages. If not for your videos I would be really stuck.

That's ridiculous, what kind of dog trainer would deny a specific dog based on it's breed! Also I have the same issue with my girl, she's literally perfect other than recall all the basic training methods worked until she turned 1 year. I am looking into e-collar training as it's been proven really reliable, It's not abusive as most people believe. but look into it because it seems to really help with training recall.

Hi Will I can’t get my 5 old month golden retriever puppy to respect me/ recognize me when we’re on a walk. I’ve tried your video guide on how to fix pulling but my dog is just so unfocused and isn’t looking me in the eyes or giving any recognition. Do you have a video that can help me out?

My pup is now 4 mths old, got him at 10 weeks old.. Staffy and Bluetick hound mix. Incredibly smart pup, been doing so great with commands. He’s now fully vaccinated so able to take him places, but here in Michigan the weather is way too cold and snowing. I wish there were indoor “parks” 🥺 His commands inside and in our backyard are 99% perfect. Add in distractions is a whole ‘nother scenario. I’m afraid when weather is nice he’s going to be getting too old for the important stages of distraction training, that good window will be closed. Teach me to get a puppy right before winter 🤦🏼♀️

Hi Will, please can you do a video on puppy growling and how to correct it? Our 4 month old Frenchie growls when we pick her up, mainly when we need to move her generally or just picking her up, or for example we need to move her from the sofa. I give her treats on times when she doesn't growl.. it's worrying that she's giving us a clear warning that the next step is she's going to bite us 🐾 thank you xx

I'm not an expert by any means... but I would have a vet take a look. It could be an injury that causes your dog to not like being picked up.

Got a 18 month old golden retriever. He's is the best most of the time, but how do I build his confidence to go into new places n meeting new dogs if they are bigger than him. He's good with small dogs n puppies but not so much with his own size or bigger dogs. He pulls badly n keeps barking till we tug him sharply. How to change this trigger behavior? Can u please give some tips

Do you add a "consequence" [correction], if/when your dog refuses to comply. What if the competing motivator was a bolting hare? Or the sheep you approached suddenly ran off?

This might be a stupid question, but a stupid question is the one not asked. So between you and garret (American Standard Dog Training) you guys use your dogs food to train. I get that very useful instead of buying 30 dollars of an 8oz bag of treats. But my question is, are you allowed to use a bowl when not training? Or will that mess up the dogs training down the road, since you’re using the “single” kibble as a currency when training. (Dogs way of thinking) why work for a single currency when later, my owner will feed me a bank vault in a bowl. Just wondering so I don’t “starve” my dog just because I didn’t train that day or a family emergency comes up, and no training for multiple days in a row.

Any tips on increasing food motivation? My dog is just not interested in food or treats when outside. He sometimes isn't even interested inside even if he hasn't eaten for hours. Everything else is just way more interesting than any food I have. It's a real struggle because he doesn't really like being petted either so rewarding with praise doesn't really get through to him.
@willathertoncaninetraining2 жыл бұрын
The best thing to do is feed them one of their meals in training sessions by hand and give them dinner in a bowl. This will help build a stronger relationship between you both as well! Equally remember some dogs are much more driven by toys or verbal and physical praise. All can work great for training you just need to figure out what your dog values 😊

Can you please come to South Dakota to train my dog she dosnt listen or care about anything I say to her😂😂
@stuartconnon58572 жыл бұрын
Here’s one - at some point you went from one dog to two dogs. Then you went from two to three and finally you landed at three to four. How did you know it was the right decision to bring another dog in to the pack? How did you decide they were stable to take another dog? What was the biggest jump? One to two? Three to four? There are a lot of people out there with just one dog, however managing the rising number of dogs in rescues often means trying to help so many and that could be offering to foster a dog or adopting a dog! What encouragement could be given from that move from 2 to three?

Not the dog's fault, just owners who think they're a fashion accessory or toy. Adopt rescues instead
