John has single-handedly forced me to stop listening to just about everyone else in the fitness world. In a world where everything is click-baited nonsense about, "STOP doing this, and do THIS instead," every time you turn around, someone is hell-bent on telling you anything you're doing wrong, just to appear as the new fitness messiah. We are fortunate to have this man's soft, non-judgmental, and powerful approach to advising the thousands of lifters out there who want to get better. Every tip is an excellent suggestion that hinges solely on someone who lived this and paid detailed attention along the way. This is where I come for information. RIP, my friend, and thank you for sharing all of this with us.

1: 90/10 Rule, Eat 90% less processed foods (Oats, Salmon, Chicken, nutrient dense foods) and 10% anything you really want or the perfect balance that makes you consistent 2: Rotating foods, kiwis to blueberries, oats to rice, chicken to lean beef, and ice cream to cookies (yes even fun foods) 3: Use your nutrition to fuel and recover from training, split out your meals through the day or one big meal if it works better for you and also a good rule of thumb is a good meal after your workouts. BONUS TIP: Don't get obsessed with the scale it takes time and it fluctuates

I used to get pissed off at that scale. I'd watch my diet, lift four times a week, and I swear that scale would look back at me and laugh it's ass off. Then I realized what MD said towards the end, losing fat and gaining muscle doesn't move the scale, however, it does alter body composition. When your clothes start falling off, but the scale doesn't change, your efforts are paying off.

You were near the output of your caloric intake. That running allowed you to burn your fat cause you were outputting over your caloric intake. That or you were exercising into a 'keto state' where you burn off your carbs store which allows you to burn fat. I've done this many times with using running as the exercise to burn fat. Don't hear people talk about this much but it's a proven thing that happens or can happen.

1) calorie deficit. 2) sufficient protein 3) lift hard. Tips: Eat satiating food to prevent hunger and stick to plan on cals in side of equation. Move more to burn more on the cals out side of equation. All you need to know. Pretty much any diet that isnt moronic and allows those 3 to be true is fine and you will get lean. How much time and ink has been spilled to say these things? That said, good video as usual.

I don’t use the terms “cheat day” or “cheat meal” because I feel that “cheating” implies dishonesty. When I do occasionally stray, I simply “indulge” myself a bit because I’ve earned it. The ability to adhere to a fairly strict eating regimen is great for both the health benefits, and for the fact that the discipline involved enhances one’s self esteem and self respect. The terminology may just be semantics, but for me the difference is important. Cheers and I very much enjoy your great tutorials MDog!

I watched a history documentary where the King heard about the oldest guy in the kingdom & sent for him. The King asked the guy "What's the secret to your long life?" The guy replied "I've only eaten meat & potatoes every single day for the last part of my life. I NEVER break that I eat steak & potatoes for every meal." The King said "Thanks let's celebrate. I've ordered a feast to celebrate my only eating the same in hopes I live as long." They both feasted to celebrate the King committing to eating that way the next day. The old guy died that night after eating lol.

You have to appreciate the honesty here and the inside stories that John tells. I can remember the first time I saw a bodybuilder hit a pose and pass out on stage. At first I thought that he flexed so hard all the blood went to his muscles and left nothing for his brain. But as John just told us, they used diuretics back then and their diets were so narrow and restricted, the poor guy was probably dehydrated and had his electrolytes way out of balance. And after this video, I now know that getting ripped and lean is only half the journey. You can have just as many problems coming out of that contest conditioning as you return to normal eating. What an eye opener.

This video is spot on! I had to learn the hard way through trial and error, and my diet was garbage for years. But nowadays i follow basically these tips. The only tip i might not follow too much is changing up the foods i eat, just because i'm lazy and it's easier to buy stuff in bulk and eat clean when i know what my macros are if i just keep it consistent. Otherwise 90/10 is great, and tbh most people could get away with like 80/20 or something because most people training don't need to get to single digit bodyfat to get on stage, you could still get a great beach bod. I also do eat my biggest meals around my workout.

I’ve gotten used to work out fasted, using the fuel from yesterday’s meal. I start eating at 5pm and I’ve tried working out after that meal, but my body feels sloppy at 7-8pm. I have the best energy to train hard at 15 pm due to this fasting schedule. You’re absolutely right about the process of changing the body composition tho. I know very well what works but I’ve had troubles maintaining my results. I think that has had a lot to do with that I couldn’t find the right diet strategy. And then it’s only natural to fall off. The diet needs to be possible to maintain over time. That’s why I’ve come to the solution of a 6 hours eating window in the evening. I can put whatever I want in there, but I obviously eat nutrient dense food as anything else will make it impossible to go 18 hours until the next meal. 🥘🥗 I’m excited to see the long term results of it.

I think that’s a great mentality.. I agree with you wholeheartedly. After dieting real hard, we go nuts! Lol. “Hunger gets what hunger wants”! John, maybe you can answer this, why the negative stigma with frozen dinners? Like you said, in the past, sodium was taboo, but now that we know better, why are frozen dinners still not ideal..Not the banquet crap, I mean like the healthy ones like “Fit Kitchen”, and “healthy choice” thanks for all the great info and inspiration throughout the years! 💪💪
