I definitely need to work more on recall with my 12 week old Lab puppy. He'll come sometimes, and sometimes he just looks at me. I have too many distractions inside in the form of 3 cats. I've been working on it in the back yard. My Longline arrives tomorrow, so I can work on it in other places as well.

I found fenrir a bit late so the foundation I had to work with from training was a bit shoddy. My dog has a very high pray drive and on numerous occasions in the past she had pulled off her leash (she's a boerboel, I'm a tiny twig) to run in the woods. Today she stared at the woods, clearly saw something as indicated by the lifted front paw (pointer behavior). I called her; she looked at me, then back at the woods and then decided yes she will listen so I was very proud of her 😊

Thank you, wonderful webinar by Joe, the Wizard of Perfect Puppy Recall! Personally, I do the Sit as well after recall, also because it makes leashing the dog easier, if that is needed. I really liked the voice -change Joe demonstrates: Right after the dog has decided to come back, it goes into a higher-pitched praise-mode. I do that, too, and find it really cheers the dog on, and makes the entire thing more fun for them.

Arent border collies the smartest out of any dog?
@user-vp8mu5fj7o

@@Sh3wbs They are, but with that smartness can come problems, they're pretty effective in knowing how to manipulate their owner, if the owner is none the wiser. As quick as they are to pick up commands, they're just as quick to pick up bad habits too.

QUESTION: how often should I work on recall with my dog? Once per day is enough? Especially that I would be working on other commands. Would it be too overwhelming? Or does it depend on my dog’s learning ability?
@user-vp8mu5fj7o
@user-vp8mu5fj7o Ай бұрын
Would depend on the breed. Certain breeds are more willing to learn than others, short but sweet sessions are the way to go, a dog will learn better from say 4, 5 minutes lessons, than 1, 20 minute lesson. If you have a dog that's eager to please and learn, then it will be easier for you and the dog. Start recall on a leash, maybe do that for the first week, until your dog is responding to the recall on leash, then work on the dog being free from the leash in an enclosed space, then gradually work your way up to wider spaces with minimal distractions, soon you will have a dog that you can let be free and come back when needed to. It's honestly easier than people make it seem. Training a dog is also training yourself, but teach them everything at once and you won't teach them anything at all. Slowly but surely, one command at a time. EDIT: just noticed your comment is 3 years old. I hope all has worked out well for you :)

Can a puppy at that stage become purely food driven? When should you refrain from praising with treats? Maybe praise with treats every other time?? My puppy is 14 weeks and I'm observing that he's almost expecting that treat and I'm wondering if he's getting to be on "the wrong foot". Thank you so much! I've learned SO SO much from watching your videos! 🙏

If you don't have a garden, which means that you will have to practise recall outside where there are many distractions, I think a long line lead is necessary at least for some time before the dogs masters it

I'm curious about recall and doxons. In the newest video on the fernir doxon channel it was mentioned that they tend to ignore commands when off lead. Does this mean I should take a different approach altogether, like only going off lead in secured spaces, or will a doxon benefit from recall training as well?

All well and good but do you do if they don't came when called? Put them back on the long line? It has been my experience that they can be perfect on the long line but once they realize that they are totally free they sometimes decide that what they are currently doing is way more fun then anything they have ever got from you eg chasing a rabbit.

What to do if recall fails? I assume we don’t just repeat the come command over and over? We were doing quite well but suddenly my 16 wk old pup has decided that maybe she won’t come every time. Or she will sniff about for awhile and then eventually come. I’m worried about ruining our recall. How do we nip this in the bud or fix it?

QUESTION: Any advice when you're training an outdoor dog? We are planning to add a dog to our homestead so they'll be outside all the time. We will not be bringing them indoors to train. Our yard had distractions like kid toys, frogs, grasshoppers, etc ... Do we just pick the quietest part of the yard and start there or do you have other suggestions?

We have a 5month old JRT and he’s absolutely brilliant at picking up all his training. He learns really quickly and bright as a button.. however this afternoon we felt confident and took his lead off in a massive empty field, he ran for the hills ‘literally’ and refused for the first time ever to come back on recall which he’s usually brilliant at. Thankfully my husband managed to run and stop him. But he was way too interested in something else to listen. Would you advise us buying a whistle? As he ran so far away I doubt he heard us 🤔

@@lauralongton6630 But the dogs desire to please overwhelms a high pitched voice. And if you are going to change your voice later it may confuse the dog in terms of intentions. If I'm in public I'm not going to baby talk my pup like that so it might as well get used to reality. Just my opinion.
