A lot of what I know about fish keeping I've learned the hard way. The hard-knocks way. Because I'm on KZbin, and I share both the highs and the lows, some of the errors have been both painful and embarrassing (and in some cases very expensive). In this video we get into the 3 errors that stand out the most. What happened? What did I do wrong and what was the lesson learned, the take away.

Hi Ben, I just found you today so missed the live but I need help. I've just established a new 75gal and wanted to do a community cichlid tank. I've watched hundreds of hours of videos and read tons of books, articles, ect. Anyway I wanted to do 1 geophagus or severum for a showcase fish and my local fish store insisted I use gravel not sand substrate. So I did. Now reading more I can't understand why they would tell me that if it will cause these fish so much gill damage. So please lmk before I start stocking if I need to change out the substrate and the best thing to use. I'm about in tears since I feel I should have known better. Sorry such a long comment.

Push over the gravel and create a sandy area with something like CaribSea Naturals. Use a siphon tube to add the sand so it doesn’t cloud up the tank. Every week remove a cup or two of the gravel so that over time it’s all sand. I suggest this gradual approach because the gravel houses a lot of your beneficial bacteria. Good luck.

when I bought my 500 gallon bowfront acrylic tank it leaked terribly when I filled it with water. What was to be an exciting moment ended up a 2 month repair. The previous owner had put acrylic "blocks" on old bottom drains and replaced them with weirs to draw water from the surface. I had to learn (many mistakes) how to repair acrylic and it was not fun. I had to set up an exhaust system to vent the hazardous fumes from the liquid acrylic I had to use to fill the sources of the leaks.

In the UK you can get the antibiotics- you just have to go to a vet!

Great stream again, catching the replay. When I started keeping fish 15 years ago. I never ran a heater in my tank. I was unknowing at the time keep fish that liked the colder water. Well when I started added other types of fish, they would only last a few days and die. I didn't have a clue as to way tell I started to actually learn about fish keeping and the different types of fish.

Hi Ben....my mistake was not tightening the return from sunsun 3000....and having a trickle leak not finding until next day carpet soaked ..90 with a hood ..down now by 6 inch...hood covers 3....always spot check your connections 👍
