Long Beach, this past week, was a perfect track to learn aggressive braking, and trail breaking in the Porsche. You cannot get around that track without trail braking. Plus with the bumps it really is a good place to learn on. It can get frustrating if you are new to iRacing, or the Porsche, but the rewards for getting it right make you feel like you have accomplished something, imo.

I absolutely LOVE the idea of using drills to hone fine skills like this. I do it in almost every other activity and especially games. Trying to learn this while hot lapping is really difficult. Breaking it down into an activity where you can repetitively apply the technique is awesome. I did some similar stuff in the MX-5 when I first started but this shows how useful it can be for learning new cars.

Keep in mind that when doing long races the weight of the car changes because you use fuel, brake bias 46% might be good in the beginning but maybe needs adjustment on the last few laps for example.

@@davecamyt I was wondering on this... do you increase BB as you burn fuel or decrease it?
@Deadmode
@Deadmode 3 жыл бұрын
@@robcawood You'll want to decrease it. The fuel tank is just ahead of the windscreen so, as the fuel is depleted, the front of the car gets lighter and it will have less grip as a result. You should shift the bias rearward to prevent the front brakes from locking with the lesser grip on the tyres during cornering from the lightened front end. You only need to do a click or two once you notice that threshold braking is lower to bring that back to a normal response. Too much and you can lock the rears and cause the engine weight to rotate round on you.

Just wanted to thank you for not just telling us about technique, but also demonstrating it while letting us see exactly what is happening with the brake and throttle… and the overlap that occurs. I’ve always wondered how the faster drivers get a launch out of corners, and it could have been an illusion at Red Bull National layout last night, but I think while practicing the trail braking, I may have figured it out. I was taking the long right hand 4th gear sweeper and it was a bit of a surprise. A shock, really. Totally overshot the last turn because of it. 🤣 Anyway, thank you for what you do. It’s very much appreciated. 👍

Thank you for the video Dave. I've been iRacing for about 6 months, and never understood the Porsches. I tried driving them and couldn't make half a lap. Sure, I've heard of trail braking, but after a few months I have enough experience to start understanding what folks are talking about. I practiced your drills for a few minutes then took the Porsche cup car out on the nurb grand prix circuit. What do you know, I could control it, and managed to even complete a lap without an off after a few times around! Then I decided to press my luck and take the 718 Cayman for a spin around mid-ohio (not my favorite track either). Whoa brother... Now I get it. I managed a 1:31.4 after about a dozen laps. Nothing impressive really, but not super embarassing either (1200iR). AND I started anticipating where the limit was and caught the car a few times. There is a lot more to learn, but now I can start the journey. Keep putting out the great videos.

You can learn trail braking in a simulator by braking later and later and engaging your survival instinct, pumping the brakes to make the apex, eventually you'll smooth it out and just release the brakes in a few little steps or twitches off and on. Ultimately your braking plot should look about like the lower leg of a sine curve.

SInce this season, i'm starting to love this car, i even dare to do a race, wich endend up pretty awesome (long beach), if only i hadn't lost it twice at the airpin... Problem is, i run baseline setup and i love it, but i fel it lacks competitivity. I used to have PDS but i cancelled it, not worth the money as the setups are weird at least. People all lost it and ended up destroying and retiring their cars, so i did gain irating :D . Well, i might try to find an advance setup and stick to it...

I put a little deadzone in my paddle to be able to rest the foot on the break. But struggle trailbreaking having the last few % on the break. I think I still apply too much break pressure and overrotate the car. Now I wonder if I calibrate the brake paddle in a way that resting foot on it is like the 5% brake pressure or do you want to have applied when getting to the apex before getting in the power. So basically the “positive” deazone. So I don’t have to overthink but only rest my foot on the paddle. Does that make sense ?

Dave I'm no nube to racing games but find project cars 2 really frustrating as I struggle to keep up with other same class cars as they pull away from me very quick I manage me setup to the max of my ability which is quite good and even if they spin of they catch me up very easily. Tried to ask advise in games many times and no one is willing to give any pointers out this is the only game I really struggle with. I know there are fast people on here but I catch people through tricky parts but they just take on on the slightest straights
