I also like the 2 minute rule. If it takes less than 2 minutes I do it while the kettle boils. Surprising how much gets done in all those 2 minutes. Even I can (usually) do that much.

YESS!!! For me my biggest issue is putting the dishes away. Putting them away while waiting for the kettle to boil is perfect Bc when I have already started/ done the bulk of the thing It doesn’t feel as hard to finish the action if I have a few more plates left after the kettle is boiled.

I have a variation: the three thing rule. I throw away/pick up/put away three things when I take a break from work (self-employed). Sometimes my work is high pressured with tight deadlines. I try to take breaks and on those breaks, rather than get distracted from work by laundry or straighten up or putting things away, just do three things. Fold three pieces of laundry, for example. After a few breaks, all the laundry is folded and put away. It seems like it just happens without any effort. Or else I'm just delusional :)

@carolann8114 жыл бұрын
I almost got in a bit of trouble once at a job by telling a co-worker I was lazy at work and she told my boss. (She would have found something else to tell my boss so I could have said I was made of green cheese and she would have complained to him she was lactose intolerant. But I digress). I was an assistant to a patent attorney and being a good boss, he followed up to find out what I meant by being lazy on the job. (He was a good guy and was genuinely curious). I explained that I created any and every shortcut possible while typing patent applications to automate the process in the effort to eliminate errors. He laughed at my politically correct answer and said if my being lazy was in the effort to make him look good, then I could be as lazy as I wanted to be. I've kept that habit and look for as many "lazy" ways of doing things as possible. I figure I've had several dozen hours of naps alone from all the time I've saved. But never at work. ;)

Hi, Carol! I can definitely relate. Less work AND decreased errors?! Win-win!

I love that! That’s of the things we say of good programmers too: if you’re gonna have to do this task more than twice might as well spend the second time automating it as much as possible to make your life easier in the future. Good programmers are lazy ;)

Same. As a programmer, I've quietly automated as much as possible of every job I've had-- so I can then have more time available to do tasks that are more interesting, or maybe just reading a new book.

I instantly bonded with my best friend of the last 30 years when we first met and she was talking about how reluctant she was to go to a group social meeting that she felt some obligation to attend. I told her that when she was invited all she needed to do was say (with complete sincerity) "Oh, I'm so sorry but I already have plans for that night." I told her that they didn't need to know that her plans were lying on the floor and looking at the ceiling. We laughed and our friendship clicked into place. It's lovely when that happens. (And yes, she used my technique numerous times over the years.)

Lefie, THANK YOU 🙏 I have some ideas on pairing, too: • Use weekly cleaning time as an opportunity to listen to a new album. • Especially during bad weather, only go for walks in art galleries. • Only play Destiny Child’s “Bills Bills Bills” when you are in fact paying bills. • Ditch scheduling staff meetings in the office and convene in giant hot tubs instead. Or just ~rip the band aid off~ and say no to doing absolutely anything 😎🤘

Ultimate lazy tip: you don't have to clean up a mess if you don't make one in the first place. I usually just eat out of whatever pan/pot I cooked in. Less washing up, tastes the same. Only downside is that I normally stand and eat in the kitchen because it's too hot to have it at the table.

I only have laundry for two people to do so I do one hot water load (whites, towels, etc.) and one cold water load. We have two laundry baskets. One for the hot water load and one cold water. Everything goes in one or the other. No picking up clothes. No sorting. I swear it helps me feel better about having to do laundry. It makes me feel like I'm a cleaning ninja. BUT then there are the dirty dishes in the sink so I'm just going to focus on the laundry-win for now. 🧺👍

Heard in a youtube tutorial on linoprinting recently: "If you don't have time for the clean up, you don't have time to print." And you apply this simply to everything. Lovely piece of advice! I have been actually using "pairing" for some time, figured it out for myself a while ago. And it works great! I resonate well with the second habit. On my calendar, I always set aside some reading time to do but I never get around it because I don't feel I'm in the right mood for it and I'm not in the right environment to focus on it. In the past couple weekends, I've decided to go out on weekend mornings and go to the beach, bring a folding chair, and read there. Listening to the waves crashing on the shore and taking in the sea breeze clears my mind and allows me to immerse myself in my books. After an hour, I feel I had accomplished more than struggling to read in an environment that had too many distractions. I plan to keep this as a regular thing.

Laziness is so underrated. I have had my best and most brilliant ideas when I was doing nothing being lazy. Of course, taking action after that could require monumental effort but I have a strategy for that too - taking small incremental steps (usually daily) and like magic I get an outcome that is great or that gives me enough feedback to tweak things around.

Good advice! I just started making cleaning up part of eating - and try to clean up as much as I can before eating so the final clean up is only for what I used during the meal. i.e. smoothie in the morning: I'd usually make the smoothie and leave all the dishes on the counter and go enjoy the smoothie. Jump up because i need to get ready for work and face the counter of a dirty smoothie pitcher, spoon, etc. I just started doing the dishes just after I make the smoothie so that when I jump up to get ready for work, I just have to wash out one mug and all is done. I tried that for dinner last night too...game changer. I no longer feel like leaving dishes in the sink..which you are right..causes more work when I want to cook again.

My cat literally eats clothes and then needs expensive emergency surgeries, so I quickly learned that all of my clothes need to be in bins, drawers, or the laundry basket. I haven't had a single piece of clothing on my floor for a couple years now, and it turns out that it's not actually that hard to put them in the laundry basket or appropriate place. I like to have 2 laundry baskets in which I put my dirty clothes in so that I don't have to sort them on laundry day - they're already sorted!

I’m proud to say I already do the first two! I used to be the kid who had to clear a path to her bed at night because my room was so messy. Then due to life I was living with my grandma for a while in my youth and one day I day came home in SUCH a mood, I don’t even remember what I was mad about. I stomped to my room and threw my backpack and jacket on the ground. My grandma came in as furious as I’d ever seen her and lectured me about why would I throw my stuff on the ground because now it’s just in the way and I have to pick it up later, so why on earth would I not just put it away the first time? Now I would have to put it away twice. She made me put my stuff away and to this day that lesson sits with me. My grandma passed a couple years ago so I swear sometimes if I am even contemplating setting something where it doesn’t belong she’s right there like “you had better not set that down knowing full well it belongs hanging up in your closet” or whatever the case may be. 😂💕
