Yes, this is why I subscribed years ago… to watch you do practical blacksmithing. Even though these are small projects, there is a feeling of satisfaction watching someone create something functional that can be used daily, just like the old days.

From the point of view of someone that hanged hundreds of curtain rail and poles your wrong hanger is actually the most effective geometry wise. If the part that is screwed is pointing up instead of down it will be safer and in most case it will hide the unsightly bracket, in your case I imagine you want to show it off but in any case the wrong one works better but you need, ideally a 90º screw attachment or even better angle the holes in opposite directions to give it even more strength.

Tres cool! Very nice pieces Alec, no wonder the local blacksmith was so indispensable in olden times. My kids went to a day camp at the local stone fort when they were younger and they had a blacksmith showing the old ways. I still have a fishing hook he made so the kids could go fishing for a while , it made me imagine what kind of requests that would be generated in a pioneer village.

Something I liked about the old style of videos: the chaticness and the plan as we go feeling. Of that this video reminded me. I also really enjoyed that whenever there was a roadblock ahead alec would just run off on a entire series worth of side project. And later realize it was not what he needed. The honesty that was there "i have no idea what I'm doing, figure it out with me" paired with "let's jump into it head first" and "I have not only the goal to finish this project, I just want to have fun in the shop and take you along on the journey.". I thought I'd let you hear something that I consider constructive criticism/a reminder of where you came from since you've asked for that. Yes, I would absolutely enjoy the less planned videos that you once made. And the craziness was a part of it. Serious and grownup Alec is weird. Cowboyhat deepvoiced Alec is what we've grown to love (Many were there long before the cowboy hats, but you get the point). And while it could be considered cringy now, I think it admirable that you just had your fun, without really caring what some of your many viewers might think of you. The confidence and happiness were great. You can let yourself still be the child you might still be on the inside ;) Have good day lads!

just to warn you, from a drycleaners perspective, over time you will have oxide from the rail come off onto the top of the curtain if it is not sealed in with some sort of lacquer. had it a few times where i work, where someone has gotten forged rails made and with constant opening and closing, the rings what attach to the rail will rub off and drop it onto the curtains. just so you are aware. also they do look cool :)

Lovely to see some "simple" around-the-house blacksmithing projects. Been binging some of your older series again, and your repeated comments about the amount of material lost to grinding/drilling, etc.: Have you ever considered/tried making canister damascus out of your "doise", all the grinding dust and drilling/engraving flakes? Would that metal even be in a fit state to forge-weld?

Good on ya Jaimie for being the voice of reason asking basically "Do you think you should measure first?" on the towel holder and "You can alter the dimensions of material" for the curtain holder. But then again your suggestion for where to put the toilet paper holder was silly, so I guess you win some and you lose some. Still you may have saved two projects.
