Cassandre is a 30-something entrepreneur renting an apartment in New York - but you might not know that with just a quick glance at her bedroom. Still adorned with vestiges of her childhood, Cassandre needed an update to reflect her growth and changing tastes. That’s where Courtney McLeod of Right Meets Left Interior Design came in. Watch as Courtney pairs a DIY ethos with her professional acumen to overhaul Cassandre’s bedroom in just 3 hours - without worrying the landlord.

I think the wallpaper trick was great, the wallpaper itself was lovely, and the carpet was beautiful. But I can't *believe* this space was put together by a "designer". It's chaotic, those disparate elements clash, the throw at the end of the bed is SO discordant, and she did nothing to improve a bad layout. Nothing about this says "polished entrepreneur".

I was going to post something similar. Though it's cute and functional, it definitely isn't as cohesive as it could've been. I think New England Beach House can be a classy aesthetic, but it just doesn't look like a 30 year old's room. If she had built the room around the backboard of the bed and made the space a little more rich & sophisticated, I think it'd make a thirty-something happy. A cobalt & gold wallpaper would've drawn the eye to the nook, instead of making it look out of place, and lent itself to a Moroccan or Greecan vibe. Throw some pictures from either of those countries or some minimalist art with gold in it, and you've basically changed the whole feeling of the space. Instead that poor girl got a frumpy, watered down Laura Ashley meh.

Cassandre was a great sport. I wish the room had been redone using her own vibrant, sentimental, artwork as inspiration and she probably would have liked it (more); also it seems that it might’ve been better to put the head of the bed in the space where the vanity was placed in order to get the full use and effect of both windows; Regardless though I still enjoyed Courtney & will seek out more of her work.

This is like an hgtv special, not anywhere near the caliber of design that I expect from AD, especially as a designer myself. I understand small budgets can be constraining but there are plenty of opportunities to be creative within that and the client obviously didn’t feel a connection with the outcome at all. Overall, I hope AD steps up their content quality rather than focusing on putting out large amounts of low quality design.

Each individual piece of the makeover actually is pretty nice. I like the designer's taste. BUT, the room has no cohesion and honestly I get a bit of a headache looking at everything. I think some of the pieces are definitely an upgrade for Cassandre, hopefully it gives her a good starting point to adjust the space. But yeah, there's a number of KZbinrs who aren't "official" interior designers who could have done a much better job.

I think if she just kept the old, white headboard and put a nice, quality comforter that pulled from the color of the painting (maybe like a nice orange that works with the wallpaper?) this would feel way better. It’s a nice touch to add an accent wall with the use of wallpaper. Never really seen that before but it totally makes sense - especially in a renter setting. Painting an accent wall takes time and more effort - this still makes the space feel funky while being both easier to put up and ultimately maintain. Cool tip!

as a first time homeowner i am looking to AD for inspiration on how to design my new space. however, having 3 hours to redesign a space seems like an unnecessary and irrelevant constraint. i think instead of a time constraint, focusing on a budget constraint would be much more helpful. you could do a series where you redesign a space at three different budgets to give people an idea of what can be done with high, medium, and low budgets. or make it client based, like in this series the client can say "this is how much i could afford to spend on this" and let that be your constraint. despite the lack of personalization that the other comments on this video complain about, i appreciated some of the practical tips she gave like how to install temporary wallpaper, how to make the ceiling look higher, and the cheap art tip. i hope you'll take these suggestions into consideration as they would be really helpful for me! currently, the biggest series you guys have are the unlimited budget 3 designers redesign 1 space series and this 1-3 hr makeover series, neither of which are very practically applicable by the average person. thanks!

Like the wallpaper idea, the framing of wallpaper samples and that's pretty much about it. The use of words like 'feminine' just puts me off. What's a gender got to do with a living space? She just wanted a 'mature' vibe and what she ended up getting was a mish-mash of patterns that don't quite work well even when the 'clashing' logic is thought of. The bed jutting out and just being that bit blocking the window annoys me. I'd have gone for a size that would have aligned with the lines of the window. Another thing is that I don't know why people don't put tables that look outwards if a window is available in a space. If I have a requirement of a desk and there's a window, I'd like to have it accommodated and work around that. This room didn't quite make me happy unfortunately. Intention was there, but execution left a lot to be desired.... Cheers!

Only think I'd add is a nice white bench at the end of the bed to tie in the desk, maybe with a blue velvet cushion of a nice white cushion with soft blue pink stripes and under the bench have some wicker baskets that match the blinds to thie that in as well and also add some extra storage space

I'm glad it's not just me being critical. Bless this mess but 1. Silver metal on the bed head and gold on the other accents. 2. The blinds should have been fitted back inside the window frame - now when they're lowered they'll hit the bed! 3. Am I the only one wondering if you'd be able to see your face when sitting at the vanity? I think the mirror is too short for standing and to tall for sitting...😖 I'd have eliminated the head board, made a feature wall behind the bed instead, mounted blinds (in a coherent colour) inside the window box, left room under the bed for storage (obviously needed), had the vanity fill the alcove for more useful flat surface oh and put a beautiful tall mirror on or behind the vanity for use while sitting or standing.

I mean maybe I am alone here?.....but I personally would be a very happy customer. I think she did a great job, I certainly learned something. I really loved that the designer appreciated the paintings on the wall as a extension of Cassandre's tastes and kept them there adding elements to compliment them. I am sure cohesively speaking another designer may have swapped them out completely and surely that may have been easier, but I could see she wanted to keep them as part of who Cassandre is as a person and that little bit of her in the space. I appreciate that consideration she took to do that,

It's a small room with two windows, there is not a good spot for bed placement. The white blinds camouflaged them better. I'd love to see a real working desk, with a chair, instead of a vanity. The wallpaper treatment and duvet with two fighting florals, and iffy application (which will fail eventually). A gallery wall with some storage would be better for the nook. A declutter plus product placement, all books gone. I wanted to like, but it lacks personality.

The client had bold beautiful colors in her paintings and I wish the designer would have played on those! Just because it's a small space doesn't mean the walls should stay white! With color on the walls, the window dressings would have really popped! Rather than fake flowers, she could have used some cacti decor or macrame hangings with a few houseplants. The wallpaper was wrong and so many ways, along with the bedding and the bed itself. The layout of the room is all wrong as well! Definitely a bomb of a design. My 16-year-old could have created a better space for the client; it's just the truth. Had she put the headboard of the bed where the desk is, he could have used a more feminine, ornate headboard and footboard. Poor Cassandre!

I think my main concern was the designer didn't use Cassandre's art as a focal point for any of her decisions. She had some really beautiful artwork, like the woman with flowers in her hair, and also the bird painting from when she was in 6th grade. They are the most unique and telling of her as a person, yet I think neither were factored into the color scheme and it made them fit poorly into the new room. Feels like a subpar job.

Designer here. I’m not sure why the designer would hang the curtains so close to the ceiling and not do the same for the bamboo shades. They were an outside mount, so the shades should have been hung higher because retracted Roman shades always hang down a decent amount. Those shades actually visually stunted the windows and hindered the light coming through, making the room feel darker and smaller. I would recommend hanging them as high as possible so when they’re retracted, the bottom of the shades just barely conceals the top of the window frames. This will make the windows appear to go all the way to the ceiling and it’ll let in much more light.

Tbh I disagree with a lower bed, because that’s valuable storage area that can’t be used with a low bed. On that note, this designer doesn’t seem to think of practicality when it comes to a rented place. The existing light was actually fine, and it means you have to put it back when you leave, as well as repair the wall where you screwed in the mirror and blinds. Also, a good vanity area has a large standing mirror, not a smaller wall mirror. It makes it rather difficult to do anything in said vanity if it’s small. Also, my other gripe is pattern clashing, if you have one floral, only use that one, and if you have any other patterns they need to be more soft, also that chair at the vanity should have a back, not just be a stool. My last thing, the colors aren’t the best together, While I love a good accent color, the tones are all over the place, cools clashing with warm oranges and pinks. Also, the nailed up wall decorations, and the floor length curtains dragging the floor, it makes it harder to keep clean

Absolutely, also it looks like she won’t be able to see herself in the mirror if she sits on the stool - The stool is too low/the mirror is too high. The practicality of it just doesn’t work
@athenarocks7657
@athenarocks7657 2 жыл бұрын
@@siom3815 that really irritated me! Also, if she’s going to choose a mirror that shape and height, why choose a lamp that overlaps it that much. I also just think she wasn’t successful in mixing patterns, geometry, or colors. The bed frame is the only hard, rectangular shape and everything else is “soft and feminine”. That doesn’t look intentional when you only break the pattern once - it looks like a mistake. Same with the mixing metals. The only silver is on the bed and everything else is gold.

C-, college dorm style. The "reds" in the duvet and wallpaper are not complimentary. If one has a vanity, the mirror should be functional as well as pretty. Bamboo blinds could be mounted at ceiling height to avoid blocking any light. Why emphasize the fact that the bed is too large with a dark headboard? Framing wallpaper samples? I should stop, but that cheap rug... Does AD stand by this technique of applying wallpaper? Blue tape is designed to be removed shortly after application and no more than 14 days.

Agree re all. Plus the style isn’t cohesive. Plus, a “nook” should have paper on the sidewalls of the nook - not just the one inset wall. Looks unfinished.

I've think the use of painters tape is problematic. I've found it needs to be removed before too long because with time, it can remove surfaces if left on longer than recommended.

@MizJilly
@MizJilly Жыл бұрын
@@hannahlanai It won't damage anything. I did a bathroom and became obsessed and did my whole hallway with it. There is a spray you can buy to increase the adhesion (you don't really need it, but it helps the paper slide around a bit so its easier to position, which is handy if its your first time. ) If you use that spray, don't use it on flat paint because it will leave a visible spot. the downside of peel and stick is it is pricey, so if you're doing more than an accent wall or the area over a chair rail, it a going to run you at least $400-800 for a room. This is straight up bad. I dont think anyone is pleased with the outcome- designer or client. I don’t know what the story is, but that wall paper and that bedspread clash big time and that bed and that mirror look so dated, like mall furniture. And that advice about painters tape is trash. On the package it says to remove it after 2 weeks or risk having the paint and walk come off when you remove the tape. I can’t believe this is on Architectural Digest. I think this designer must have had some major snags day of because she couldn’t have made it on here if this was indicative of her work.

I really love this designer’s perspective and the way she communicated her vision! The choices really improved the flow of the space…particularly the addition of those luxe cream curtains and a lower bed profile. I didn’t realize how much visual space the previous bed took up until it was changed! The only thing I would change would be a slightly sturdier desk stool that could be used for an actual work-from-home day. (Which is hard to say because I loved that little blue velvet stool!) I also loved the accent wall, that unusual mirror, the rug - pretty much all the pops of color. Interesting and fun makeover!

Disappointing overall and the client did not appear to like it either. The request was for a bedroom befitting a 30yr old 'grown-up' entrepreneur! There is no "entrepreneurial success vibe" at all. The client actually expressed dismay at seeing her sixth grade bird painting in a prominent spot. Obviously there was some miscommunication. Unfortunately this room refresh did not give the designer an opportunity to shine. The client is left with walls and window treatments that are subpar for AD. I can name at least two influencer/designers who would have made the client happy.
