I really hope this gets upvoted because people need to know about this. I think his might have worked because the pin was already shorted but for those who don't know, the reason microUSB have a 5th pin is so that the phone (or other device) can use the port as a USB HOST port. This requires that you short out two of the pins. (Google "microUSB pinout")

no ive done this before its not always neccesary alot of phones dont follow the protocol and will work with flash drives without enabling the otg mode i know this because ive made usb adapters that specifically dont enable otg mode so i can use usb devices on my tablet whilst charging something which you cant do when otg mode is enabled

A good alternative to the syringe idea would be using the hollow end of a pen (with the ink vessel/dispenser removed) I have been doing that to my broken headphone plugs for ages, not as "easy" as you might have to cut plastic off (and you might still need to drill it if your wire is bigger then the hole in the tip) but is far more readily available and will last longer. Another good idea would be to put a bit of heat shrink tubing over the finished project for aesthetics
