I don’t really grant your premise. The original subtitles, developed by Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi, are indeed better, and I don’t know why the version Steph and Andrew watched didn’t have them (not their fault, obviously). But it’s worth pointing out that most of the dialogue was originally written in English by Abhijat Joshi, and then translated into Hindi. In fact, Rajkumar Hirani has said that there are a couple of scenes in which the Hindi lines don’t have the impact that the original English did (notably the “Farhanitrate/Prerajulization” scene, and Raju’s interview). Having said that, I doubt that the subtitles have much of an effect on how much someone enjoys the movie. And what’s the evidence that non-Indians who have actually seen the film don’t love it as much as Indians? The fact is that the overwhelming majority of people in the West (who are the “foreigners” you’re thinking of, presumably), especially in the U.S., have never even heard of this movie. How can you love something if you don’t even know it exists? More than that, there are some significant cultural differences that have nothing to do with subtitles, in terms of plot, character, and even the production itself. The film is apparently very popular in places (especially in Asia) where education systems, parental/family pressures, etc. are similar to what young people in India experience. Meanwhile, I was born and raised in the U.S. by immigrant parents from India, and while I love the movie, I can’t personally relate to those stresses, because I never really experienced them; I just have a sense of them because of what my parents and other relatives who grew up in India went through. I did have a ton of stress growing up, but it was for other reasons, many/most of which “Indian-Indian” kids likely wouldn’t relate to personally, even if they understood them.

Either she's just not expressive when she's watching things, or she ain't connecting to the movie emotionally. which is a problem, especially with a film like 3 idiots that has so many opportunities to do so, and is obviously one of the most easily emotionally translated movie from india across the globe..

I have watched this movie like a hundreds of times and trust me when i say this...This movie is the epitome for all the friendship movies. I always cry on that RAJU jumping from 3rd floor scene and then the ambulance scene where Rancho is on the scooty covered with blood, crying and is making way for the ambulance. RAJKUMAR HIRANI is an absolute genius, the way he montaged the recovery of Raju in Hospital is just PERFECT, that one Montage shows how much love his friends have for him. And the conversation between farhan and his father is captured sooo beautifully that it manages to make us cry and have a smile on our face in the same time .This movie always manages to make me laugh, cry and always manages to motivate me to follow my dreams and to never give up on them. 3 Idiots is one of those few movies which are never going to get old. A 10/10 movie. (Not even exaggerating)

Steph saying "this school should be shut down" got to me. The college I studied in, had a suicide case every other month. I lost a friend because of that. These institutions never changed and never will sadly. I was a kid when this movie came out and nothing has changed till date. The Viruses are still there the imperial colleges are still there and so are uncountable Joys and Rajus.

When the movie was released, which is 2008-10 ish at that time the suicidal rates of students were significantly high and the system was so corrupt that it was difficult to get justice. Hence nobody cared enough so you Americans can appreciate how much Indians have to suffer and go through to reach where we are now which is way better India than it was 15 years ago still a lot needs to be done but things are changing
