Hi, Al! If you were in a pine forest, some boughs interlaced make a good bed - keep you off the ground. Don't know what you could use in deciduous forest as an equivalent, tho. Also, if you want your potato to cook right the way thru, try smaller potatoes, or prick them and have a bit of foil to wrap them in & steam them.👍

A brilliant and very interesting video. As a possible suggestion for a future video following the survival night theme. Do some research into putting together a ten item kit that fits inside a tobacco tin . Then go out only with some dog food for your delightful buddy and just the tin in your pocket . I did a similar test in the army and even with loads of training and experience it can be a very interesting experience like what you have experienced in this video. I enjoy raw potatoes and they are more healthier for you raw than cooked . Also collies are bred to be very Hardy creatures even though alot of them are domesticated these days. Good luck with your future endeavours.

In the country or mountains of America in the old days 5c would be called a 1 dog night without a blanket. At least that's what my grandpa used to tell me. And you had a dog.;-)

That generation was tough! Humans are all softening as time goes on 😂. I think we all need to do a bit more ‘without a blanket’ (the safety blanket we all seem to use). Thanks

@@BUSHMANandBLUE yeah. I remember camping in a tent with my brothers, by ourselves, when I was 10 or 12 years old. It was the family vacation, we did it every year. Mom and Dad stayed home, we lived in a tent. Cooked our own food. Fished, went swimming, told each other scary stories, and loved every minute of it. If we did it today, my parents would have been in trouble with social services. But we lived different lives than people today. I still have trouble understanding how people talk about how hard it is to go solo or "wild camping." I'm in my 70's and because of life choices I was not able to go often for years but I made sure to take my kids, so they appreciate it and still go themselves. I'm now starting to get back in to solo camping and sharing the "Forgotten" supposedly, skills now called Bushcraft. See ya in the woods.

I give both my teenage kids the freedom to do anything but now a days they don’t take it. I wish they did and went out on adventures like I did as a child. I’m glad we were brought up in a time that children learned by doing and trying! Come the apocalypse everyone under 30 will just die out straight away because the internet stopped 😂. I’m glad you’re getting back to a bit of wild camping. In life we all get moments of contentment and elation but being outdoors you get more and they last longer! Enjoy my American friend.

Definitely but I have to be careful what I show to people and also having permission to trap. If I had more time I’d forage but again showing it can easily make people try it and pick the wrong thing which as you know can be harmful. I just love being out in it all!😬

I just looked over the last 11 months vids I dont see you have done this concept a second time? Would be good to see. On our West Coast here, 4200KM from where I live, a very common event is to drive off the mountain and become stuck in your car or in a steep ravine you cant climb out of. I think challenging yourself to limited gear, and not necessarily the best gear, is a good challenge to do :)

Nothing set in stone, just explore those ideas of what you'd do to make it better, and see if it did or not. Be something to do when not on the trails and something maybe you can get a following for a group to back and then make it happen.

I was gonna say - yer gonna have a crap night! Your 3 items were fine but when you didn't make ANY attempt to prep the ground at all you're done for. You need to get your fire stuff ready first and then look at the pile of wood that you think will last you the night ..... then go get 4x's more of that amount to add to the pile! Once the wood is sorted THEN prep the ground. Level it and get it piled up (in canada we just cut pine boughs tips off the trees) with anything, and make a flat bed AT LEAST 2 feet thick, because by morning that will have compressed down to 2-3 inches - if you don't get your butt off the ground with something between you and the ground (pref dry) you won't get a stitch of sleep. After the bed is prepped then get your tarp up - if you ‘re not sheltered and it is raining get the trap up rough because chances are, if your tree branches, or moss, or leaves, are damp or wet the bottom edge of the tarp has to go on top, of that soggy mess. Besides if it IS wet stuff you’ll still have a crap night and forget sleeping …… nod off a bit but you just have to sit up and keep the fire going all night. We also have a slight advantage over you guys in that you pretty much can’t stretch your arms pout in Canada and NOT hit 20 acres of pine trees so we have TONS of insulation always handy to get a bed built …… but your beer is better.
