I really like he explains practical application of kata people told me they were just tradition and not all have application I think the purpose of them is becoming lost to some places I like he teaches that. It could just be my limited experience with 空手 as I'm very much a beginner to these arts and misconceptions defanantly effected my perception of these awesome & beautifull martial arts

Looks like Karate (or To-De in former times) was the ultimate MMA back in the days but many kata were encrypted so much, that their meaning got lost in time. Therefore it is wonderful to see the brotherly dynamic duo Jesse and Oliver showing us the relevance of certain movements in Karate kata. Absolutely love it! PS: Found this channel just a few weeks ago and still catch up with all the great content! Well done!

The explanation about how you should angle your opponent away from you (at around 5"17) is the application I think of everytime I practice the opening moves from Pinan Sandan. Congats Oliver on your entry in the Bellator, hope to see some of your fights soon ! Btw : thanks Jesse, your channel is one of the few YT channels that got me back into Karate :)

I have studied the video quite a few times, and definitely see how the sprawl is more practical and logical to explain the movement especially in Kusanku. Most teachers and the bunkai show a duck for an attack with a staff. Thank you for the video. 👍🙌

Congrats Oliver... also a great video. I practice traditional Kung fu, wing chun,seven star praying mantis, and yang tai chi, and I am taught what all the moves in the forms(or kata) are for. Every move has a purpose. It is always a pleasure watching your videos Jesse . It helps keeping traditional martial arts voice out there. I do get tired of hearing how TMA is outdated. It is not,you just have to find the right teacher . Keep up the great work..been a subscriber for well over a year now and just love your stuff.

@ I blame those over the top wuxia movies/TV series for that. They're cancerous yet popular that some dojos/gyms started teaching students flashy moves instead of the more practical ones. Though what I hate the most is that they corrupted children's mind. Just imagine you teach in a dojo then a little student asks you "When will I be able to fly like in those movies?" In one hand, crushing the dream of an innocent kid makes you feel bad. But on the other hand, letting his imagination run wild is bad for the development of his martial skills.

Can you do more of these? I no longer practice but every karate or kung fu class I’ve attended over the years couldn’t explain the forms/kata so it’s fascinating to me seeing how they apply to real self defense.
@zacharygreen11285 жыл бұрын
I agree with the first two my only issue is number 3 in that your knee in the kata is in a differnt position than in a sprawl. It eoudl be cool to see you sir that kaya to defend the takedown. What I did notice was that his overhook the way I teach it is very similar to the wong block and could be a grat bankai in this case.

It's really fascinating how much knowledge that has been embedded in traditional forms, that seems to have been lost or forgotten. With the way most people train forms today, much of it doesn't really make any sense. Thanks for sharing these insights! However, even if the techniques can be seen as being included in the forms, do you really think that it's useful to practice them in that format? Personally, I'm very sceptical. I think forms won't really help us apply the techniques-or even train them correctly. Either way, I find the subject very interesting. I made sort of a response video, if you'd like to check that out.

I'm glad for your brother! That's a huge step. I was thinking yesterday qhen I was training, that I am struggling to get better at "the form" of katas (faster, stronger, more relaxed specially, and flashy). And I think that I'm just getting tired of trying to master some movements that seem either unpractical and unnatural for the body, or simply a miss-use of the real technique behind a movement. What I mean is that we spent too much time in "perfecting" a kata just to make it more flashy rather than just to remember the techniques and use them for a better assimilation of the real combat applications.... And that, lately, has been bothering me quiet a lot
@MarcoECDC5 жыл бұрын
Yes! I think one must distinguish what one is working on - am I working on the application, or the aesthetic component/s of a stylized form? Neither is intrinsically "wrong," it may be more a matter of what your particular intent at the moment may be. Eg, I can "speed" jab (looking perhaps to cut my opponent ['s zygomatic process ] ) or I can jab and "hold" (delay) it for a split second, occluding his line of sight ("blinding or obscuring jab") - which of these would be "incorrect?" ;-) Osu!
