In Bristol, eagle-eye officer Russ spots a passenger dressed in a suspiciously smart suit making a swift exit. A bag search discovers three kilos of cocaine hidden in the fabric of the case. In Gatwick officers are on the lookout for a passenger previously charged with importing drugs. And in Cornwall, the customs officers aboard Searcher rummage a massive Polish cargo vessel looking for potential smugglers and discover a stash of 10,000 cigarettes.
In Gatwick and Bristol Airports in England customs agents check baggage and travellers to uphold allowances and prevent illicit activity and substances from entering the UK.

You don't seem to understand the huge reponsibility the custom officers carry on their shoulders. If they fail to stop a drug trafficker there will be many peoples death on the officers hands indirectly. Its a very heavy burden. They have to be super alert and diligent at all times! There is no room for mistakes. There are trafickers and drug mules that carries several kilos of cocaine or heroine etc so every bust is important! The customs catch various amounts of drugs every week and month and they are not even able to catch them all. You don't want them drugs in your country and these officers does one of the heaviest liftings physically and mentally.

If you were a customs officer and regularly dealt with people who don't speak English, would you carry a book of common customs phrases translated into common languages? Or would you learn to mime simple concepts? Or would you do what UK customs officers seem to do, which is just roll your eyes and repeat the same questions in English over and over?

Some UK customs officers do speak other languages, although as far as I know it’s not a set requirement, and depending on the language they may also have staff within the airport who speak the language too. Plus many public services have access to LanguageLine, a telephone service which allows translation of hundreds of languages including some rare ones. If someone genuinely doesn’t understand a word of English then they can use translators, or they can request one. Plus I don’t know what your experience is of other countries’ customs but when I flew into Vietnam the customs officer I dealt with spoke only Vietnamese and expected me to respond to him in Vietnamese also. Fair enough, that’s the language of the country I’m in. It’s been the same for my dealings with the police, local government offices, bank and hospital- the staff mostly didn’t speak English, expected me to at least understand Vietnamese and many of the documents and forms I was expected to fill in were only in Vietnamese.

@@eliz_scubavn Same in Turkey. It’s fascinating. In Sweden, you need to speak at least three languages to work at the main airports.

I love it when I go to immigrant services - visas, etc. - in Poland and NOBODY speaks any other language but Polish. You can walk into any shop, practically, and greet the staff in Polish, and if you are not a native-speaker of Polish, they quickly realize that and offer to speak to you in English or some other language. Pretty much anybody who works in the public sector offering any kind of service will be able to communicate at least at a basic level in English or another foreign language. But the moment you step into a government office - including immigration and visa services - nobody speaks anything but Polish. You've got people whose entire job involves talking to foreigners about their visa applications, and they can't speak any language but Polish, despite the fact that universities run degree courses in English for foreign students with absolutely no Polish language requirement to attend. So you can get a university degree in Poland knowing only English, but good luck trying to get any kind of documentation without being fluent in Polish. At least at some point they finally put English and French translations on forms so it's easier for non-Poles to fill in the forms that were created solely for the use of non-Poles. But there was a time when all the information for foreigners coming to Poland was written only in Polish, so unless you were completely fluent in Polish, you had no idea what your rights and responsibilities were as a foreigner in the country.

Whats the deal with smuggling cigarettes in the UK?
@swimgirl24
@swimgirl24 2 жыл бұрын
I think when the UK left the EU, the prices of cigarettes went up. I’ve also seen people on the show be confused what the custom limit is because the EU allows more cigarettes to move between countries. but when the UK left the EU, they dropped the allowed limit to something more stricter. The problem is people don’t know the limit changes so accidentally bring too many cigs into the country and then get in trouble.
