Paul, I soo needed this! I've just come back from about an hour in the car, with my bumbag kit, -doing- attempting to do an A6 (6" x 4") watercolour landscape with a moody sky. I used to do masses of such landscapes, because where I lived in the UK was fenland or Wolds and huge skies of all moods.... _Attempting_ do it is the true version. For some very strong reasons, including the massive move from the UK to France, just post-Brexit referendum, and all the financial challenges that brought, it is several years since I did a plein air landscape, and I struggled. Really struggled. Really, really struggled. Basic drawing, colour mixing (shock!!!), drawing trees, with my _small_ kit? Where has my skill gone!!!! The painting is ok, but ... So to come back and watch the third part of this video was exactly what was needed. I'm in the throes of a very big craft project for our church here, so my own art isn't actually on the agenda, except for teaching (which is currently not landscape), but I'm putting this one and your previous 10 minute video, in my "Painting hints, tips and just plain comment sense' folder to use again in a month or so, to do some serious revision alongside the exercises I usually do with my students. I certainly need it! Thank you! 😊

@@ArtbyPaulClark Thank you dear Paul for the answer! I watched your video, I really liked the second episode - a withered tree and the third episode with the silhouette of the island and a ray of light through the clouds of a gray overcast sky. Have just found your tutorials and been binging until my new supplies arrive. You have some really helpful stuff, very clear explanations (plus a cheery manner to brighten our day). Only one thing missing - I have not yet heard if your paper is flat or sloping, it’s not clear from your video either. Paper angle is really important when using wet washes and could be a reason beginners struggle to achieve the effects that you do. I’m sure you will have mentioned it in a ‘basics’ video but KZbin doesn’t organise the order for us so we don’t see it. Not really a complaint, I love what you do, but perhaps just mention ‘this is xxxxxxxx paper and at a xx degree angle’ would help. Keep up the good work!

I am self-taught with help from you and others on KZbin. I make cards and glue my pictures on the front for birthday cards for my grandchildren and other family and friends. They are all great practice for me, and my grandchildren are framing their cards for their room. I let them tell me what to paint. Some are total failures, so I start over, but I still learn from them while I develop my style. Try painting a snake chewing bubble gum. I had him blowing a bubble. 😂 I am having fun with it.

As always, another Wonderful Watercolor Wednesday! This is just exactly what I needed today, since I am fairly certain that whatever I paint today is highly unlikely to be hung in our local art gallery (although, one can always hope). Better yet that I put to practice these wonderful techniques as you so masterfully demonstrate. I must confess that I am most looking forward to playing with the clouds and I am extremely excited to put the two incredible touches to the water reflection painting. I will definitely bear in mind that these 'are totally in the hands of the watercolor gods'! And should they not first succeed, I shall toss fate to the wind and give it another go (or more 😂). Thanks ever so much for generously sharing your incredible time, teaching and talent. 👩‍🦳🖌️

Hi Paul, What is your opinion on the need to stretch 300gsm/140lb watercolour paper that is NOT on a block? I have been using Arches, Saunders Waterford and Canson papers without stretching (taped to the board of course) with quite decent results. Some say stretching is a must, others say it is not necessary for papers of this weight. I am confused. Or should I simply take the easy way out and buy the papers on a block, even though this is more expensive? Thank you so much. Rae
@ArtbyPaulClark
@ArtbyPaulClark Жыл бұрын
Hi Rae - It does depend on the type of subjects you paint and your budget. If you paint a lot of big landscapes with large watery washes then you will get some issues with 'buckling' even with 140lb paper - which can be frustrating. With larger paper, 11" x 14" and above this will even become more of a problem. So, yes I would stretch my paper if this is the case ... but because I paint a lot using paper daily I go for the block or thicker paper option. .. life's too short!!!

You seem to use Payne's Grey as your dark tone which I also use. It seems to have a blue tint in it? When it comes in contact with a yellow, it can make a green. Not good in the sky! I just started using Neutral Tint (Winsor & Newton). Have you ever used it? Why do you prefer Payne's Grey? Love your tutorials. I'm working my way thru them and learning a lot. I paint six days a week and am making good progress. Soon I'll start using my travel phots to "go it alone". Thanks so much professor!

I like the slightly blue tint in PG - is you don't use too many brush strokes you should not get a green, especially if you use with more opaque colours like Yellow Ochre.

Hi Paul. Living Down Under I have no chance of attending one of your classes in person so these tutorials are great. I am having trouble though with exercises which recommend "dropping in a blob of clean water". I still get a hard edge around the area which has been "blobbed" and not the fuzzy edge I am seeking. And yes, I do it while the paper is still damp. Do the Water Gods not like me? Rae

mmmm, interesting Rae, not sure I can tell without watching you do it and knowing what materials you use. Try it on some different papers and see what happens.

I love all your paintings, thank you for sharing your talent. Im a total beginner @age 62😂. Its kinda sad because art material here where i live are expensive & hard to find. I can only afford to use school quality paints…btw can i use watercolor on canvas?

Thanks - and no, unless you paint on a watercolour 'ground' first. Although you can now buy watercolour canvas.

Good morning Paul and thank you so much for your fantastic work and the way your share it. These exercises seams close to master pieces for me, espacially the last one ! Your have all my admiration and gratitude. I would be very interested by a video more personal relative to your journey as an artist, for example your education (or courses I dont now which word is the good one !), the way your art has evolved, your influences, what do you expect or dream of concerning your futur skills (if you have some dreams but as an artist too I know that we have some periods made of dreams or simply new goals), etc. Thanks again and have a good day wherever your are !

These are wonderful exercises and reminds me to play more & stop - as you said - trying to create masterpieces every single painting. May I ask what hardness of pencil you use? I use a 2HB and I find it smudges an awful lot. Thank you for sharing

Paul, thanks for sharing as I have a problem with water and what color to use. This one looks easy. I would love to see a few more water paintings. I understand it, but putting it on paper seems to be an issue sometimes. Thanks again. Darlene from Nova Scotia, Canada 🇨🇦

Thank you for these shorts, sometimes that’s all I can handle! I did some techniques from your old brick and stone lesson, and wondered where I should post it to show you how well it turned out. It’s a stone wall in a park where we use to play as kids. I don’t go on FB very often anymore, not sure if you use that. Also, glad to see you using your three paints for this sky that you talked about the other day. I began using those 3 the other day, and I really like practicing with just those 3 to see if I can get the colors I want.

Hi Paul, I really liked the tree and the water. Could I ask a non-related question? I have a pallet of half pans and can really see the advantage of using from the tube. Is it possible to grind down half pans to create a consistency like the tubes or is that a bad idea?
@ArtbyPaulClark
@ArtbyPaulClark Жыл бұрын
....mmm.... bad idea me thinks! you won't be able to create the gooey consistency of tube paint.

I was noticing the dark parts underneath clouds today, how near they blend up into the whiter parts, and at the edge farthest away, the edge is sharper, flatter to the horizon, and sometimes darker due to the angle and seeing the same color but as it flattens and recedes away it compounds..nothing earth shattering, just an observation..great job!

"Ivy growing on trees is often thought to be a serious problem, endangering the health of even very large trees. However, its presence on the trunk is not damaging and where it grows into the crown this is usually only because the trees are already in decline or are diseased and slowly dying."

Paul in the water painting do you think the back run on the left was necessary? Looking at it again it competes with the sun and light on the right. And what is lighting it? You always teach composition also, wondering if you did it over would you do it?
