That kind of plays into my suggestion, not only Jamie's "request" but also, instead of just Ben judging, have the boys do 3 meals across 3 days, so each cook each day, but also their family judges. I believe all of them have kids, but if Mike doesn't then even just having Mrs Huttlestorm would be fun to hear her feedback on his cooking, and on the entertainment of his cooking.

I've got to say, Barry is great at these, it feels like this is his niche. And he's right, making the use out of ingredients across the week doesn't just mean the ingredient, but the "leftovers". I often roast a whole chicken, shred the meat after then use that already cooked meat into curries, sandwiches, pies etc throughout the week and it's great that he did that with the salad and the bacon here. Well done Baz.

I do the same, I’ll use one breast with some creamy pasta, another in a salad, the legs in a curry and then any leftover meat on the carcass plus the wings I’ll make a chicken and sweet corn soup for 4 different meals from one chicken then use the bones to make a stock in my slow cooker with any vegetable trimmings etc
@banderdash2702

@@NJTRAF Love it! Smart cooking right there. My usual go to, roast dinner, chicken and leek pie, chicken curry and coronation chicken, then the same as you make the stock from the bones. You've got me wanting to try the chicken and sweetcorn soup now, maybe some noodles.

Letting Barry cook in his preferred style, with full control of the activities, and not being subject to any interference we got to truly see the range of qualities and skills he has but rarely has the opportunity to demonstrate in other videos. He planned well, shopped intelligently and cooked calmly and got everything right following a personally devised plan rather than experimenting and putting himself at jeopardy

this went really well! I love and really appreciate the tactic of carrying over cooked components - as someone who definitely cooks a lot with base + leftovers in various forms, it's closer to the thought process than the looking at ingredients inventory as a whole set to use efficiently

Trick to fry onions faster - once they start sizzling, add 1 or 2 tablespoons of *boiling* water to the pan - the steam from the evaporating water distributes the heat through the onions more efficiently, breaking down the cell structures and starting the caramelising of the sugars faster. Cuts the frying time by 1/3 to 1/2.

I totally applaud the focus on no food waste but it boggles my brain that all the cheese had to be used up to apparently avoid it being wasted? Hard cheeses like cheddar last for ages anyway and freeze really well too. I know it wouldn't fit in the constraints of this challenge, but generally it's far more cost effective to get a big block of cheese, and if you're worried about it sitting in the fridge for too long just grate the rest and stick it in the freezer.
