There should be monuments to anyone that went into the place. I've read up on a few other nuclear accidents through history where men sacrificed their lives to basically save millions and prevent wide scale land or sea exposure to radiation. The level of courage it must have taken these men is nothing less than historic. The stories are awe inspiring and give me hope for humanity.

There's an episode of, of all things, River Monsters where Jeremy Wade was given permission to fish in the waters surrounding the site. It was interesting to see how things work there for the people allowed in. You're given a small meter that looks like a pager and you're instructed to keep an eye on it as it's not only warning you of dangerous levels of radiation, but it's also keeping track of how much you've been exposed to. Once it reaches a certain point you HAVE to leave or risk death. While he was in there, you got to see how strange the radiation acts. There's spots where you're exposed to hardly anything, but, walk 15-20 feet forward and you're being hit with a HUGE amount that triggers an alarm on the meter. It's like that throughout the area. As you would expect, there's more pockets the closer you get to the plant. What's interesting is that some of the pockets furthest from the plant were reading MUCH higher levels than a lot of the pockets closest to the plant.
