Would the retinols /azelaic acid products from the brand The Ordinary be ok to use as cheaper alternatives? Would love your view of their products as a dermatologist, as they are so affordable yet dont want to risk upsetting my acne prone skin! Thanks.

Informative video, thank you. Deciem.com sells Azelaic Acid 10% and is nicely priced. I have been using it for about five months and works well for keeping my skins texture smooth. I cannot speak about acne because I have been fortunate as a mature women not to had this issue thus far. I only wish I knew about these products as a teen when my breakouts were fears.

Thank you, Dr. Sam! As always amazing and highly informative video. I personally like Obagi Retinol 1% and saw great result after using it. I am a bit hesitant about Azelac lotion however. The first ingredient is Alcohol Denat. Is it not to harsh and irritating for aging/acne prone skin?

Nearly all three products she has mentioned I have been using for over a year. They are proven and the retinoid and sunscreen is definitely anti-ageing. Azelaic acid 20% was prescribed by my dermatologist and is called Skinoren for pigmentation. Costs £10. Altruist is a 30 spf sunscreen and 2 big 200ml bottles cost only £8 on Amazon. 99% invisible and non spot forming

Dr Sam< thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us, its means so much!!!! I just recently found your channel and already picking on my routine mistakes and trying to correct them, thanks to YOU!!! To be honest I found out about Azelaic acid just before I found your channel and straight after I started using it I noticed changes in my comedones and scars (I'm 37 and my jaw and chin covered in closed comedones!!!)... Its so frustrating and heartbreaking when you have good skin all your live and at 37 BANG!!! I waned to ask will it be too much if i use Azelac Lotion you've recommended with Azelac moisturiser from the same range. Im just confused which one to pick, cream or gel... My skin is more towards dry type, but I like the packaging of the gel as it comes in the tube, unlike cream, which comes in a jar (don't like jars). Or may be I don't need it at all...Would really appreciate your opinion! Thank you:)

So interesting, thank you. Wrinkles are driving me nuts! I'm much older and my skin wasn't bad - but switched a month ago to Vit C+ E+ Ferrulic in the morning with a SPF50 sunscreen and then Rosehip oil at night - and suddenly heaps of wrinkles esp around the eyes and my cheeks. Skin tone is now awful! Please help, what am I doing wrong?!

Instead of rose hip oil, use a moisturiser at night with ceramides and niacinamide. Ditch the C Serum for prescription Retin A and maybe Devita solar protective moisturiser SPF30 during the day

So far the only sunscreens that I can use and not get a lobster red face or horribly itchy eyes are EltaMD UV Physical tinted SPF 41 and Australian Botanical sunscreen SPF 50 also slightly tinted. I use them religiously but I would like to use one without tint so I can put makeup on (with tinted ones I only use bronzers/blushers). Unless I am wrong this one Dr. Sam is using and few others untinted are a mix of chemical and physical ingredients as I don't see titanium dioxide, only zinc oxide (can't see the percentage). I have a sun allergy and reactive skin, aging/dry. Does anyone with similar issues know if this one is NOT causing irritations? Buying and returning is pain and time and postage costs. Thanks for always informative and useful videos Dr. Sam:))

I use the elta md spf 41 and australian gold spf 50 and wear liquid foundation over top of both. Just use a beauty blender to apply.

Shani Cross: Thanks for the suggestion:) I did it few times this winter but to me it looked a bit too much on my aging face, Especialy EltaMD as the tint is a bit darker. I am not a fan of of lots of layers and mineral sunscreens are a bit thicker. Taking SPF & foundation off properly in the evening can be time/products consuming:)

You might like the bare minerals prep step spf50. It's just like a primer but has loads of zinc in it. Works really well under makeup and isnt hard to get off. :)

Shani Cross: Can't thank you for for introducing me to this product! Would never even consider looking at it as I am not using primers nor I remember anyone talking about it. I have sun allergy and I can't go out without covering face, hands and neck:( This sounds like holy grail I hope it will work for me as I must reapply or in the evening red dots and itchy skin will stay with me for few weeks. Pricey for 40ml only but I can use chemical ones on neck & hands. Tomorrow straight to Sephora (I can return, hopefully I wan't have to!). After that, good, old Amazon with a bit less hurtful price:)) Thanks a million:)))

Is Differin useful for managing skin texture and aging?

Hi Dr. Sam, I'm 27 years old and I have an acne prone skin, but ever since I was introduced to proactiv, it really helped cleared my acne. However, I read in some articles that products containing benzoyl peroxide can potentially cause skin cancers. What is your takeway of using such products? I know for a fact that benzoyl peroxide is quite elusive in the UK.

I ordered the Sesderma because of the actives, but now that I received it I see it's based in denatured alcohol and I'm concerned using such a strong alcohol in a daily routine would be inflammatory/pro-aging. Did I get the wrong formula? Or is this something that you don't consider to be problematic? Thanks!

What about Differin for aging? I've heard different things.

I'm using Differin, one week in, and following, You Tuber, Dr Dray's guidance on how to apply it (apologies if Dr Sam Bunting has posted guidance on the same topic, I just haven't seen it). My understanding is that Differin does not have enough research to back up any anti-aging claims/benefits and that, if it has any anti-aging benefits all, it is believed to only work on fine lines, not deep wrinkles. I was using Isotrex, successfully, but "due to manufacturing problems" with Isotrex, rendering it "unavailable for the foreseeable", which, incidentally, coincided with Differin becoming available, over the counter, in the US, I'm guessing that Differin has the monopoly of the pharmaceutical market. Just a guess though...

My understanding is Tretinoin is anti-aging and helps with acne. Differin helps with acne (it binds with less receptors which is why it’s not a potent as Tretinoin but also imore well tolerated). That doesn’t mean differin doesn’t have anti-aging benefits... just that it doesn’t have the studies to back it up since it’s been studied as an anti acne medication.

Would it be ok to use your mentioned sunscreen containing niacinamide after a topical vitamin c product? Does it depend on the strength of both active ingredients or should you always using both at the same time?

Can Azelaic Acid be used in the same routine as Retin-A for acne? E.g. AA in the AM and Retin-A at night? or would that be overdoing it? my other option is Salicylic Acid in the AM instead as I do have a good Paula's Choice 2% bottle.

Hi Sam, are silicones harmful to acne? I've seen a couple of retinols with dimethicone in them, will this do more harm than good for spots? If anyone can help me with this I would be most grateful. Desperate to get on to the retinol train. Thank you.

No. That’s a myth that has been floating around. And if I may, I’d encourage you to look into retinoids versus retinols if your skin can handle it.

Hi Dr Sam, I am on the hunt for an effective make up remover that really gets it all off before I go to bed. My micellar water from klorane although amazing for my sensitive skin just doesn't get all of it off. I am considering trying the Clinique take the day off cleansing balm but I'm perhaps also looking for something when I'm feeling a bit more lazy like a micellar water. I have suffered with acne in the past but for the most part my skin is sensitive and prone to dryness but it gets clogged up easily as well. Any recommendations would be fantastic !!☺️

Hattie Sleap I have severe acne prone skin and dry skin and I cannot recommend the clinique balm enough so so so gentle. I went to a concert wore very heavy makeup and was quite intoxicated to take it off so I just went to bed and the next day just a tiny bit of balm and every last trace in just one rise was off. It leaves absolutely no film or residue behind and that's what separates it from other balms and oils. I always follow up with my regular cleanser (drunk elephant bestie another love) but I cannot live without the balm. Honestly waters do not cut it if u are a religious high spf wearer. I would go for the balm doesn't take much rubbing either

I like the cult-fave Bioderma micellar water. However, keep in mind I treat it as an SPF/makeup remover and not a proper cleanse. I do not believe in lazy days when it comes to skincare basics. For me, if I’m too tired, skip the serums/essence and face masks. A proper cleanse and moisturizer should be the bare minimum. A few minutes of your time is worth it to stave off a week or more of breakouts or hyperpigmentation.

I know this comment is old but I really have to encourage you to stop this habit. You are probably aware that sleeping in makeup is bad but it doesn’t seem to bother you very much if you opted to do it anyway. Sometimes people complain about having acne but they do not apply enough effort to remedy the issue. And yes, there are many more factors involved in acne (some outside our control) but sleeping in makeup shows you don’t care. I just have to say this because it’s not all that different than people complaining about their weight but they do not exercise and eat junk food daily. There is personal responsibility.

Hi, what do you think about Clindamycin Phosphate gel? Can i still use my vitamin C in the morning? Also can I use it with tretinoin at night? On other note, I read that vit c and niacinide should not be used together in a routine. So if UV Pure from Elta MD is used as a sunscreen, wouldn't that interact with vit c?

There are topicals that use both clyndamicin and tretinoin, in the same formula, so there is no issue with using both. Theoretically l-ascorbic acid and niacinamide should not be mixed in a low ph formula (LAA needs a ph under 3 to be effective), due to the formation of niacin, which can lead to some skin flushing. But, that is very unlikely to happen, as it needs some specific conditions. So, you can layer vitamin c and niacinamide, worst that can happen is some transitory flushing, that can also be avoided by waiting between layers.

I use Clindamycin Phosphate in the morning because it was prescribed by my dermatologist at the same time I was prescribed Isotrex for the evening (many years ago). However, I was having laser treatment, at that time, too. I've picked Clindamycin Phosphate up again to combat any purging from starting Differin, recently. It's working. I look forward to your feedback comments because I don't want to use this in the long-term but still wonder what I can still use with it, in the interim. Re Vit C and Niacinamide, according to You Tuber, Liah Yoo, you can combine The Ordinary's Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate and The Ordinary's Niacinamde 10% + Zic 1% in the same skincare routine without them cancelling each other out.
