Finally some logic on why I use a trucker hitch or better yet a bowline on a bit for tarp tie outs, and why I don't use the taut-line hitch. With that said the logic comes into play, and I get why its a favorite for many.

@Anonymous Won Its great for a ridge line as well. Line comes off the tarp around the tree, and in stead of tying a truckers hitch I do the bowliine on a bite. I also rig gin poles with it to adjust the gin pole for the perfect pick point.

@Anonymous Won I do have a video on the bowline on a bit. It unties easy as any bowline does. I have had rigging freeze up, cold rains then come off well into the single numbers but a good spike loosened them up as will as a bit of pounding. but that is extreme case. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHSzcoFuiciXf7s

@Anonymous Won The version I showed isn't technically a bowline on a bit it has another name which eludes me. I need to work on the slippery bowline.

None of those knots slide or adjust on the fly for when the front, winds, smoke clock around like they do in every storm. I’ll stick with what Guides use.

Plus that loop in the truckers hitch never comes out easily, certainly not after being yanked on all night under tension and certainly not when it’s wet. Usually the person who tied it doesn’t want to get it undone with the rain coming down and decides to leave it. Tarp lines become a mess that won’t unfurl with that left in and it’s never in the right place twice.

@Anonymous Won truckers hitch is designed to secure loads so they won’t move… to a truck, hence the name turckers hitch, not meant for a tarp that has to adjust for driving rains clocking different directions as a front clocks around moving SE then S then SW then West as it winds itself out like all storms do. Much easier with the taught line hitch drop the height of the clove hitch over the poles and tighten the ridge line for driving rains or smoke or adjust which corner of the tarp becomes the “dump” corner as that front clocks around with the taught line hitch. Personally I like to spend as little time as possible outside the shelter of the tarp adjusting for this while rain falling like a cow pissing on a flat rock or is falling so fast it’s rolling down your sleeves or falling off your hat so fast it’s pooling on your hands as your adjusting lines. I like the taught line hitch because all you have to do on those situations is slide the line not completely untie the knot to adjust it.

@Anonymous Won but the reason her tarp has lasted over 20 years is because she doesn't use a rope ridge line. :D

@Anonymous Won she says it in the comments when someone asked what kind of tarp it is. Impressive! Im glad she mentioned it as it made me realize I'd like a tarp that has loops I can use accross the top instead of a line on the tarp itself
