It's true when I was young I had my first street fight. I had know idea how to fight back then. But neither did he. I fought the way I saw it in the black and white movies. But being chase by gang members (70s) had taught me to street fight and I survived my preteens and young adult life (by the grace of God). Then in my 20s (being a short guy) I got pick on again by bigger guys(never a short guy go fig). So I join a martial art school, (Hawk Frazier/Micheal Reed) Shotokan. I learn a lot there. Especially these moves you mention here. But thankfully I had to use my skills once. Against a 6ft male (I am 5'4) in a homeless shelter. I thought at first my skills did nothing against his advancement ( to hurt me ) towards me. That is until he called the police on me and told them I beat him up. Cops came to me with him and ask him if I was the guy who beat him up? He said yes. Then they laugh and said this little guy beat you up? And laugh some more and left with him. That's what happened to me. True story. Again, everything you said here does work. Sorry I wrote such a long text.

I call it "The Window" . That small fraction of time between self defense and fighting . Within that fraction certain techniques work that likely won't work outside it because by then your opponent is now energized and aware you are fighting back . So being preemptive during that window is key . Think about how you are walking down the street and suddenly a barking dog rushes you from a yard as you pass. It's happened to us all. You flinch , close your eyes , go off balance and are disoriented . Then seconds later you realize its just a small 15lb dog behind a fence . You are a grown 200lb man and so you relax and go back to your day knowing you could easily beat that dog if you have to . BUT, for that brief window it had you!. Train to be like that dog . Be capable of instant , overwhelming but effective violence and you can turn the tables on the bigger man. Odds are they are going to give you the gift of standing flat footed and square, chin up and arms out anyhow. That classic " What's up?" posturing . Looking submissive puts you in perfect step on foot/ headbutt position for one . And like said here, don't underestimate a body shot on an untrained person .

In the wee bit of Chinese boxing I learned 48 years ago, with a big guy, I had to block, block, block and move in nose to nose, hitting only soft targets, eyes, ears, and nose first, because that's where the pain and disorientation is. And when you move in, you move in fast while blocking. No standing "outside".

We're talking about my younger days but I am small and have always been out sized and out numbered. I have defended myself against people twice my weight. The only blow that I ever delivered that seemed to have any real effect was a strong front kick from the back leg. I trained a defensive style and trained a few ways of springing back on to my feet. A couple of times that seemed to give me a psychological advantage. I'd like to think I didn't start the fights but maybe my friend is right in that I suffer from little man/Bruce Lee syndrome. As a smaller person you have the element of surprise, one punch i supposed to knock you out.

The strike to the nose pushing the cartilage upwards is the best approach..targeting the solar plexus requires alot of skill reserved for professional fighters..if the solar plexus was so easy to target then why do professional matches last 8-10 -12 rounds. Surely the pro fighter is aware of how vulnerable the solar plexus is and would like to end the fight as early as possible...but they don't even though they throw alot body shots..the plexus is not an easy target...which makes it a risky technique for street combat, especially considering that your attacker has some kind of cloth padding on tho soften the blow. Go for the eyes or the soft cartilage of the nose pushing upwards towards the brain, with force is the fastest and safest way to disable your attacker

There's a lot of good food for thought here. The other mistake is putting yourself in a position to be in a fight in the first place. Most times it's late at night, someone's drunk, you put yourself in a vulnerable position where you're by yourself, or any combination of those. Nothing good ever comes out of those situations to begin with. Avoid them in the first place. But you give us great advice in case something were ever to happen, and running away isn't an option.

I may not be the biggest and/or the baddest, but I am the meanest and the nastiest. Preemptive is the best way to go, but if you don't get the chance or didn't see it coming the next best thing to do is attack the attack. Responding is better than reacting and know this, most big guys out there aren't good fighters anyway. They flex and look mean and most people just back down so they don't get many opportunities to hone their skill. But even if you run into that big guy who can fight, being smaller allows you to move better and faster. There's more than a good chance that he will try to grab you confident he can just overpower you and force you to his will. This is where I make them pay for not respecting me enough to punch me in the face. My specific style is folding laundry........with people still in the laundry, LOL. The mightiest oak in the forest can be brought down by the chainsaw, be that chainsaw and be the one stuck on full throttle😉

One thing I can almost guarantee you in a street fight (I’m generalizing for 90% of ALL street fights) is that you can count on your opponent throwing punches from alternating sides due to arm punching and not using the kinetic chain, and throwing almost exclusively round punches. The defense they use will probably be limited to leaning the head back without bringing the feet along for the ride. Most people simply CANNOT fight. Their body betrays them because their brain is to blame. They are so overwhelmed by adrenaline that they can’t relax and forget to breathe. That’s why so many in-shape people gas in less than a minute (sometimes WAY less). You will have an advantage if you remember to breathe, relax, and save your strikes for openings.

I'm 6' and usually 200 pounds, Running is as much a good defensive tactic as any other. If I can't talk my way out of a fight or confrontation I prefer to retreat while facing the threat. If that bad, I'll run. Cornered, I'll do whatever I can as the overall end result, is to survive unscathed.

I am just shy of 5' 10" and around 193lbs. This bully was around 6'3" and over 250lbs, I had guessed. It is funny how people think they are dominate over others by their size and they end up being boisterous assholes that under estimate their opponents. I am a very peaceful person. I've talked my way out of confrontations many times with peaceful logic. Sometimes running is the best option. We can either raise fists or walk away

Knees... ...If you are smaller, a quick straight kick into the knee. The legs are the foundation, disrupt that with hyper extension and weaken their base. I watched a 5 foot guy take down a 6 foot guy by executing 2 quick kicks into the knee followed by a football punt kick under the chin.

But what are the mistakes? Here are some suggestions: 1. Thinking you are going to win outright. The only time this will happen is if the bigger person doesn't actually want to fight, in which case, you are the aggressor with a little man complex. 2. Assuming that any formal training (especially early in your training) has improved your chances much more than it actually has. 3. Not being ready to be picked up and lifted clear of the ground. (This has only ever happened to me during the build up or was how the fight started). 4. Not being prepared to be pinned to the floor. A 14 stone female can pin down a 9 stone male no problem. She might not even be trying to do it, she might have fallen on top of you. 5. Training any kind of finishing moves or combos. 6. Expending too much energy early on. 7. displaying any kind of fighting stance (until actually fighting) or telling the person that you have trained. "I must inform you that I am a yellow belt in origami". 8. A definite NO is a belief that you can rely on carried or improvised weapons. If it's you that introduces a weapon, expect the dynamics to change drastically and know that the levels of reasonable force used against you will be completely different... TIPS. Don't underestimate anybody but as a short slim person, I have found that tall slim people are the hardest to deal with. Muscular men are often over confident and some have only trained weights not fighting. They can be the people who think that they will only have to hit you once. Overweight men and women often think that they are more capable than they are. The only real advantage I can see is the weight. You have the energy, speed and movement advantage. Grappling/ground fighting only works 1 vs 1. This is rarely the case in a street/bar fight. If you think you are going to ground and pound, be ready for the guy's girlfriend to hit you with a bottle. If like me you want to avoid the fight, learn to deal with adrenalin. This can make your whole body tremble because it kicks in before you are ready to use it. Be comfortable with yourself and who you are. Accept that you are a small man and even many women think they can beat you up. You have nothing to prove. Your one big advantage is that most people will underestimate you. However, you don't have this advantage for long. If you want to keep the advantage, be dynamic and be ready to change style, technique and strategy. Change it early and more than once, even if you are starting to get the upper hand. Afterwards, be gracious and humble especially if the police turn up. They will be trying to determine who the aggressor was and will be ready to judge you as small guy with something to prove.

My Friend I am 5”7 and yes I learned early, knowing everybody is way taller than me, I quietly trained in kick boxing, yeah a lot of horrible bulls**t I went through in senior school and after, I avoided fighting as much as I could but sometimes you have to defend yourself, I heard Tyson Fury say today Francis is 6’5 19 stone, how in the world would I survive against a man like this? Without weapons, it rattled me to the core thinking I’ve gotta fight this man and there’s no way out of it, this is what I’m constantly thinking about everybody is bigger than me haha even when I played a bit of basketball you know I’m moving out the way of the big man lol My friend Utmost Respect, sounds like you have a lot of experience in fighting because I read everything and it totally blew my mind because I’ve gone through most of these things, I’ve never started a fight on anyone and the only time I have little man complex is trying to dunk a basketball, I need a vertical jump of 47 inches, to old for that now lol Thank you my friend

This is 100% on point. I got into a fight with 3 individuals in Santiago, Chile and as a smaller guy against 3 people, preempting gave me better target selection, psychological advantage and planning. Having wrestled in high school, I used a lot of leverage but I only did that because I was sure no one had a knife so I was sure I could fight close. To be honest, not fighting is best because sometimes it turns out badly.

Excellent point about groin strikes not being always dependable. Bigger opponents can have thick thighs and a sagging belly which makes groin access difficult. A much taller opponent can be difficult to strike in the face because the target is too far away. Effective body shots require good aim which can be difficult if the opponent is moving their upper body. No matter how big the opponent is, the knees, are usually vulnerable, instep & toes are as well, if the opponent is not wearing work boots.
@punisher7772

Strike under his jaw, chin or throat. A strike traveling upwards will also be harder for him to see as opposed to a wild swinging punch to his face because it's coming under his field of vision. True, a punch coming towards his head especially his jaw he will most likely just lean back to avoid it. Also unless your punch really packs a wallop I don't see it having much of an affect on someone a lot stronger and heavier. Doesn't make much sense especially when there are such better targets to go for. Although one strike that can work is an overhand palm strike to the head. All you have to do is watch the UFC 3 fight between the Kenpo guy vs the Sumo to see it's effectiveness. Muay Thai style shin kicks to the thighs work great against a big guy. It's like chopping down a tree .

Also just like the palm slap a raking claw strike across his eyes works well against a taller opponent. Open hand is faster and extends the reach. And doesn't take any strength to damage an eyeball.

Well, this didn't cover being a short or thinner man at all. Me being all of 5'5" tall, opens up most of my opponents to lower body and abdominal attacks rather nicely. I also will attack major joints such as knees, hips, ankles/top of the foot. Self-defense and ring fighting are completely different ideas and practices. On the "street', one needs to be ruthless and do whatever is necessary to be able to survive and disengage a confrontation.

I'm 5'3". Growing up in watts, LA, muggings and gang fights were regular occurances...14 gangs in my high school and that was in the 70s. In a multi assailant situation preemptive is the only way to survive. Also, the concept of chopping down the tree. In other words, many times, I couldn't reach the face but there are a lot better targets lower down as the good doctor has pointed out. Big fat guys? Take out their knees. They'll topple. Skinnier guys? Liver, solar plexus, groin, make them bend over then knock them out. And the biggest way to maximize your hits is to learn acupucture points. They really hurt even to the slightest pressure. For me, since I was so quick, people couldn't pin me down. I trained my legs to make up for the distance discrepancy. My kicks were quicker than most punches. BUT sadly, that was when I was younger. I feel like I can't take a punch anymore. In my mid 60s and am slower now but still train almost daily. I now feel the need to carry knives and a firearm. Practice every style you come across. Me...jkd, wing chun, tae kwon do, judo, aikido, and fma, Inosanto style and balintawak. And, combat pistol, and carbine. In an apparent single attacker, or even 2, I say LOUDLY, I don’t want trouble multiple times hoping to be heard by bystanders. With 1 or 2 attackers I have waited for them to make the 1st mistake. As many of you know, in aikido and fma, that's what we use for an opening. Never use a fighting stance, always a 2 hands up and open, like thai boxers..looks like I don't want trouble. That way, if attacked and you maim or kill, you will look more like the victim which, you are of course. These days tho, with the numbness to violence, and the randomness of attacks, and general craziness. you just never know anymore. At least in the old days, straight up gang violence, or muggings were understandable.

Small guy right here, barely 5'7. South American. Do you guys remember- in the movie Mortal Kombat (90's) when Art is fighting Goro and Jhonny Cage is yelling "In and out! Get in, hit and get out!" You might be laughing and I don´t blame you, but this stayed with me and has helped me more than once when in altercations with bigger / taller dudes. If they hold on to me, I know I am done and dead (I don´t know wrestling, grabbing, BJJ...). Jokes aside, best to not fight but when the bully comes, you gotta do what you gotta do despite your height / weight!

Problem with accessing the neck isn’t that they’ll hunch their head lol its that if you’re smaller you have to reach up and get past their arms, and the fact they’re not just going to let you get at them. This person you’re fighting isn’t just standing there. It actually does matter how much smaller you are. I can’t see a jockey being able to take on the Rock even if the jockey’s technique was flawless. And despite the fact that jockeys are pound for pound some of the strongest athletes there are. It’s so cool how he wanted to talk about fighting someone bigger and talks about reality, but shows someone who is slightly smaller and his striking methods are designed for someone relatively same size. If you’re a very small person, bets strategy is to not get in a fight, get good with a gun and carry.

You must have never trained in martial arts before. One thing I don't believe was mentioned in the video you have to get in close which is actually the best place to be when your smaller. Of course he isn't going to just stand there and let you do it to him. If your inside up close you will be in-between his arms where a strike up into his neck is possible, your not doing this at a distance where his reach is longer. Also plenty of street fights where the shorter guy wins. All you have to do is watch some You Tube videos to see for yourself. I don't think a gun is the solution to all your problems. Also I think a knife would be better for most self defense situations. I am not a big fan of killing other people with stray bullets.
@Princegriff89

@@punisher7772 I’ve trained in martial arts tho not to any degree of proficiency and not in a discipline that I would consider suitable for street fights. I have seen those videos, I’ve also seen fights where small guys and martial arts experts lose. It’s up to everyone to decide for themselves the best way to defend themselves. Feel like my option is a gun. Fused spine, limited mobility, and painfully short. In a street fight, you really might not have an idea what your opponents skill level is, what they’re capable of, how far they’re willing to go to do it, and what they may or may not be hiding. You may be perfectly willing and able to square off with someone but you might then be staring down the barrel of a gun, that’s why walking away should be the first best option. But, earnest question, Is there no technique or maneuver that can defend against what he is doing in the video? And if there is a technique, is it not one well known or not often taught in martial arts training?

Hitting the shoulder is not quite as destructive as hitting the center of mass, BUT as shown in the beginning of this video, it moves the opponent in a way that rotates his torso. This is easily used to lead an opponent into different types of chokes and stand up grappling opportunities.
@3DVizzion
@3DVizzion Жыл бұрын
You forgot the eyes. Eye poking is a direct neutralizer too. When you hook you also hit the center of mass of the head or body, not the jaw, the jaw is loose and can, in fact, disperse shock as it is loose from the skull, you actually aim for the neck, and whatever position the head is you will do maximum damage.

Amazing video, But keep in mind that if you go for the Throat or Temple it has to be proportional to the threat or you will end up in prison in most countries. Always evaluate the threat you are facing, and make the right decisions to escape or deescalate, if that is not possible last resort is a fight, and even then if your life is not at risk, do not go for spots that could easily kill your opponent UNLESS your life is at danger. Alot of people got into serious trouble for protecting themselves with too much violence, as stupid as that sounds i do not make the laws.

I prefer the solar plexus as a target, it is easy to locate and the body can't dodge a punch like your head can. I was messing around one day when I did a wrist flicking motion, basically I was twisting my wrist and flicking my fingers out in a spearing motion. Let me see if I can explain what I was doing... Holding my right hand out with my palm facing down I was snapping/twisting my hand and pointing my fingers palm up and my fingers pointing to the left. It was just a quick snapping motion, and I thought that it seemed like it might make a good striking move, so I tried it on my stomach. It made a pretty good hit and it didn't really hurt my fingers at all, so I tried it a little harder, I thought "Damn, that hits pretty hard", so I tried it a little harder but not really full force, and was surprised at the effect it was having, it was a pretty solid feeling strike. Here is where I got stupid... I thought "Gee, I wonder how this would feel to my solar plexus?" FORTUNATELY I didn't do it full force when I tried it... I, literally, dropped myself to my knees gasping and trying to breathe!😂 It is a quick and compact movement that delivers a surprising amount of force all concentrated into the space of your fingertips. Give this move a try and see what I mean.

Good analysis on power, targets and why not hit hard ones with the fist (except if used as a hammer). That being said, hitting targets out of the center line, such as the knees or shoulders, isn't necessarily a bad idea because you break your opponent's structure by doing so and if, for instance, you damage the shoulder's head the arm attached to it won't be an issue anymore. Now, if you move at the same time towards the side (something Silat practitioners love to do), you're going to make yourself less vulnerable too...
