Just wonderful, I've been looking for "foods to store for disaster preparedness" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Ponannah Unthinkable Prestige - (search on google ) ? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for discovering how to produce an amazing bug out plan for your survival without the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got cool success with it.

Thank you for telling us that anyone can go to a Home Storage Center. I thought it would only be open to LDS members and I didn't want to call a location and ask that question. I have seen a few other prepping videos that talked about the centers and website that is linked from the LDS webpage to order online if you do live near a location.. In one of the first videos I saw about prepping and the video talked about where they purchased their food to stockpile I asked another viewer who commented on the video if the centers were open to everyone because she stated that she grew up with the LDS church and had been prepping her whole life but I never got a response from her or the video creator 😭. Thank you also for the showing what a years supply of food would look like for one person, seeing it makes it seem more realistic to be able to accomplish storing a supply for year because I live in a small condo. I didn't have a clue what a years supply of food would look like but thought it was more than you showed. It was a pleasant surprise to see the amount of boxes which I feel can be stored all over the house to not have to take over all the closet space in one particular area at least until we can buy a home with more storage and a garage. I love the spreadsheet you provided it also makes getting starting with prepping less intimidating because of preceved big expense of purchasing food for the whole year. It's awesome that it will calculate the breakdown per month in costs so that everyone can work towards that goal given their budget. Or if they want to reach the goal sooner or later.

Hello @Broke Couponer! Thank you for your generous comment. It’s so encouraging to hear that our video is helping to make it easier for people to get a year supply. Before you head over to the Home Storage Center, I would give them a call just to make sure they are open and have inventory. I understand that stock for in-person pick up has been low recently. But you can still order stuff online - though it is a bit more expensive. Thanks for watching! Stay safe and well.

I'm not a member of the church. i go to my nearest Home Storage Center all the time. no one even asked me if i was a member, no one tried to preach at me, just nice helpful people! HOWEVER they are entirely staffed by volunteers, and often have VERY limited hours! make sure you know what the open hours are to go!

I think I thought you had to be LDS to order from the website, so I didn't try to use it for a long time. I heard it was okay so I finally set up an account a few days ago and put some stuff in my cart. I thought the shipping would be $40 or something but it was $3

Okay, I know this isn't the point of the video but I'm on the verge of tears lol 😢 I don't know if you have any familiarity with autistic people or autism but it can be incredibly stressful for us to go to certain new places or do new things when we don't understand what's expected of us first. Often we don't intuitively understand the rules for spaces and people are inpatient and unkind to us because we aren't doing what they expect us to do. At about 4:20 the description you give is EXACTLY the kind of support a lot of us need to be able to access new places, especially if we have to go alone (which we often do because we tend to be isolated). It means so much to me to have an idea of how this works. I wish that more people (and moreso agencies) would do this for more things. Airport security and things like that especially, it's so stressful. Thank you so much, the way you've covered this has directly increased accessibility.

This is a great starter way to get long term storage. I started off this way, then found I had to change my diet completely. I can’t use grains. I had to give away my whole storage from the church store. The adage store what you eat and eat what you store. Food storage is meant to be a bridge to get us to the next step for sustainable food foraging or development. Nutrition is essential, so I focus on proteins that are digestible. Fats are essential nutrients. I focus on meat, nuts, seeds, and lentils. Having shelf stable fats with higher omega 3 than 6 is hard to do to be shelf stable. Next, I do things to add variety and flavor. Thanks for what your are doing.

Hi TruthSeeker. There are many reasons people may want to do more than the minimum quantities suggested in this video, including (1) increasing your daily calorie count to make things more comfortable, (2) having food on hand to help others, and (3) being prepared in case events disrupt the food supply longer than a year. Hopefully this video helps people get started and empowers them to make adaptations based on individual circumstances. I would definitely encourage folks to follow the feelings they may receive about building on the baseline recommendations in this video. Thanks for the comment.

This is great for 600,000 calories, 1643 per day, but that is half rations for a working person. I would have 6 cases of wheat, 300,000 calories, 6 cases of rice, 327,000 calories, 6 cases of oats, 160,000 calories, 4 cases beans, 200,000 calories. Now that would be 1,000,000 calories or enough for a working man, at 2,700 calories per day. I would rather have too much than not enough. I like the new LDS powdered milk. Tasty and very convenient and I can live on that as an almost perfect food, making good sauces for grains.

LDS Store is great. I like all items except for the flour, potato flakes, and the sugar. The four is bleached, the potato flakes are loaded with additives, and sugar is likely GM (since it doesn't say cane sugar) and much more expensive that in the store. Bob's Red Mill has the best potato flakes but you have to store in mylar bags. I eat them regularly and great for making potato soup.

"350$ a person". I wish I bought storage when I first saw this video and knew I wanted to, only a few weeks after it was first posted I think. When I finally bought food storage it was more around 500$ last year. Now it's already almost 600$ for the second year of storage I just bought. But that's not the video's problem, just highlighting the new price for Current Year. It might double or more by this time next year, potentially even far more. But anyway, thanks for the video, I used it for my 2 years of food storage (or 1 for 2, but, I haven't found my +1 yet.) Though now I really need to figure out how to actually use it when the time comes so I can print guidelines and recopies to tape to the boxes.

good advice, mostly agree but. . ,. if you buy wheat you do need a grain mill, as shown in the intro. Also keep in mind that wheat farmers, my parents were for example, always let their flour age for a few months before using it. That just made better bread. Maybe just buy flour. I prefer old fashioned oats 1)as many recipes call for that 2) what it takes 2 min. longer to cook (or just overnight it) 3) if you really need quick oats, take 10% of oats needed, blender them for a few seconds, mix and you got quick oats. Next, if you are strapped for money, or even if not, think about getting an old large freezer. sometimes they are free on Craigslist. Put in DATED 20-50# bags of flour, oats, rice and beans. these are always 25-50% the price, per pound, of lds tins. In summer l run for 15 min a night (heavy duty timer). winter spring fall nothing. rodent proof, you control other variables and, if s does htf home raiders will not open up another rotten, smelly horrid freezer! security. Lastly, l would suggest a search for "basic storage cook book .pdf" the .pdf brings only downloadable cookbooks. get a few and delete uninteresting ones. the others will be invaluable.

Hi Qualicum Wilson. Thank you for watching. And thank you for sharing your advice. Just as you said, when working with wheat, you will definitely want some kind of wheat grinder. We have both an electric (as you saw in the video) and a manual wheat grinder. We also regularly incorporate wheat in our everyday diet (in a whole wheat bread recipe and in the pancake recipe you saw in the video). That way we know how to cook with it. Flour is definitely more convenient to work with the unground wheat. The reason that we store wheat in our long term food storage instead of flour is that wheat has a 30+ year shelf life whereas flour only has a 10 year shelf life. Really appreciate your comment and for sharing your advice. Thanks for watching!

Flour stored in cans turns starchy relatively quickly. I have some stored that is now only good for playdough. If you want to store flour in a bucket that will last longer. But wheat is the best for long term storage.

Hi @hypnotic Listener. It is crazy how prices have gone up -- and we just made this video last November (2019). But, as you said, these are still the best prices around. Prices are better in-person at the Home Storage Centers, rather than online. Unfortunately, from what I've heard, most Home Storage Centers are out of stock at the moment and the best way to get it now is online. Thanks for watching.

Great video. I will share it with my friends. But I do wish that you had mentioned salt. It is necessary for the body, and only takes 2lbs to fulfill the recommended daily value (rdv) for one adult for one year. Even buying one 28oz canister would get you close enough.

Hi Sarah. Thank you for the comment and important reminder. At 2:34 in the video I briefly (probably too briefly) mention that the Church recommends “add[ing] other items to your longer-term storage such as sugar, nonfat dry milk, salt, baking soda, and cooking oil” and “stor[ing] foods containing vitamin C and other essential nutrients.” I agree that this deserves more attention. I hope to make an updated video in the future on this. Thanks so much!

Biggest problem is how to cook this stuff in good recipes. I put beans, rice, oats, wheat, milk powder in a pressure cooker for thirty minutes with water. Turns out pretty good. I have many other recipes but it's for emergencies. Any cooking ideas for this dried food that is good?
@ActivelyFamily
@ActivelyFamily 3 жыл бұрын
Hi @jackgoldman1. Completely agree and thank you for the food storage medley idea! Here are a few very simple recipes: www.churchofjesuschrist.org/bc/content/shared/english/pdf/callings/welfare/104587_06600_000_RecipesBrchr_pdf.pdf Rice, beans, and oats are pretty straight forward. But the wheat gets a bit trickier. In an emergency situation, I’m confident that I’ll be glad to have it, even though it might taste bland. But, in the meantime, we use our wheat for baking homemade bread. We also live the following whole wheat pancake recipe: www.melskitchencafe.com/oatmeal-pancake-mix/

The beans sound about right but 300 pounds of grains seems like too much. Who eats 13 ounces of grains in one day? That's about 3 cups of flour. I currently eat about 2-3 ounces. Even if I double that, it's still only about half of 13 ounces. Is this assuming people will eat much more grains because they won't have access to meat?

Hi @CoolTaxiDriver. That is a bummer. If it makes you feel any better, I understand that most of the Home Storage Centers are out of stock at the moment. So the best way to get things now is through the online store. Unfortunately, the prices are a bit higher (to cover shipping) but these are still the best prices I have been able to find. Here's the link: store.churchofjesuschrist.org/usa/en/food-storage-3074457345616678849-1 I've been noticing though that even the online store is starting to run out of stock on some items, so if you are looking to pull the trigger on this, you might want to do it sooner rather than later. Stay safe and well.

The price in 2023 is $600, double from 2019. I think this is related to the massive inflation of the IOU debt supply by Democrats for Covid shutdown. Food prices have doubled in three years, meaning my savings, my net worth, is slashed in half, down 50%, for food purchase. This is a devastating loss for savers going forward. Politicians have caused severe damage to the nation and families.

Thanks for walking the extra mile and presenting the info thoroughly and with visuals. That was great. I have a question, since the Church website seems to be out of stock a lot lately, I've been buying rice and beans in 20lb bags at my local grocery store. How long do those products last in their original bags? My goal right now is to have food for one year. Won't those last a year at minimum in their plastic bags?
@ActivelyFamily
@ActivelyFamily 4 жыл бұрын
Hi GreenTree! Thank you for the kind words. And thanks for watching. Sorry to hear that stock is low at the home storage centers. You should be good if you are rotating through your uncooked, store-bought rice within a year. Below is what Uncle Ben's (www.unclebens.com/faqs) has to say about it -- hope this helps!: UNCOOKED RICE Uncooked plain dry rice will keep almost indefinitely on the pantry shelf. The rice should be kept in a cool, dry, insect-free area at a temperature of less than 80°F, with no foods or materials nearby whose aromas can be absorbed. For best cooking results and flavor, we recommend that the shelf life of UNCLE BEN'S® Brand Dry Rice Products be followed. In the refrigerator, uncooked rice can be stored 6 months to a year, and in the freezer for 1 to 2 years. When freezing rice, be sure you remove excess air from the container to avoid freezer burn. To cook raw rice that has been previously frozen, thaw to room temperature prior to cooking.

Hi Em A! I’ve not used mason jars for that purpose. So not 100% sure. I assume they would keep out bugs just fine. But I don’t know exactly what you would need to do if you wanted to use the mason jars for long term storage (as opposed to short term storage - jars would work just fine for short term storage if regularly rotate). What are your thoughts on storing flour instead of wheat?
@ActivelyFamily
@ActivelyFamily 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Amy. Flour is definitely easier to use than wheat. The problem with flour though is that it only lasts 10 years, even when properly packaged. I do have a little flour in my long term food storage that I will eat up before it goes bad, but it is much more expensive to have the flour properly packaged (at least if you are buying it packaged). So I keep most of my flour in my three month supply, where it doesn’t need to be specially packaged and where I am constantly rotating it. I keep as much flour as I can rotate through before the “best by” date. Make sure to watch our 3 month supply video explaining how we rotate things. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqqXZauvltZgrK8. Good luck!

Hi. Thanks for the video. I have seen some sites say LDS recommends 400 lbs of grains but I've also seen the 300 lbs recommendation like you mentioned. Is 300 lbs the most recent recommendation? Also, where do potatoes fit into the picture? Would they be considered to be purchased as an add-on to supplement the grain recommendation? And how much potato flakes for 1 person for 1 year? Thanks.
@ActivelyFamily
@ActivelyFamily 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The 300 lb amount is based on what is on what is currently on the church’s website : www.churchofjesuschrist.org/topics/food-storage/longer-term-food-supply?lang=eng However, an Ensign article from 2006 listed 400 lb: www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/2006/03/random-sampler/food-storage-for-one-year. One of the most detailed food lists is published by BYU. It includes recommendations about potato flakes: ndfs.byu.edu/https:/brightspotcdn.byu.edu/b1/4d/75fc449e4ce9843daa701f69faa4/an-approach-to-longer-term-food-storage.SEPT2019.pdf. Personally, and I’m not a nutritionist, I view the 300 lb amount as a minimum recommended amount to sustain life. I also make sure I keep a robust 3 month supply on hand. So be sure to watch our video about that. Hope this helps. Best.

Without electricity and plenty of water, this will help you nothing. And should there ever be a crisis with food shortage for a whole year, both electricity and water might not be available all the time. To just rely on dry food that humans cannot eat without processing it first ist not a very good plan. Theoretical nutrition and available nutrition are very different things. Stock up on canned fruit, beans, meat, ready meals like ravioli, etc … they last for decades too and all you need is a can-opener and a spoon.
