I moved into a 100 year old house 15 yrs ago and it was overrun with buckthorn in the back corner. When I removed it....a fully operational shade garden emerged in the spring: Carex, Virginia waterleaf, lily of the valley, daylilies, asters, woodland phlox, solomon's seal and LOADS of carex. Mystery carex. It seems to do as well in part shade (morning and afternoon sun) as it does in the deep shade of the woodland garden. I love it.

How would Carex woodii and Carex blanda work in a matrix together?

Thanks for the wonderful teaching you do, greatly appreciate it! Are there any native sedges that do well in part sun? I would love to start transitioning gardens to have sedges instead of mulch.

Part sun = part shade lol...the difference will be soil moisture.

Does the C.albicans tend to stay green though a Zone 8a/b winter? I have an oak tree in the front yard that I planted some C.pensylvanica under, and enjoyed that it has a little bit of green during the Autumn and Winter. I'd like to add more in the coming weeks, but I'll scatter in some C.albicans if I can find it at the nursery.

I'm not familiar with 8a/b so couldn't answer definitively. Check w a local grower/nursery. thanks for watching!
