You have inspired me to fix the 2002 wj that i just picked up for a song with a knock, probably just going to get a " refresh ". Can't believe you got ahold of a Wagoneer that clean, WAY TO GO. Keep doing what you and your brother are doing. Haters are going to be haters, please don't let them bother you, just keep doing things they way you do them, obviously it is working. Grand Wagoneers are worth more money.. It wasnt just a name change to differentiate the xj wagoneer. The older ones had trim levels.. Laredo, Honcho, golden Eagle.. Super Wagoneer, limited.. and so forth. The Grand Wagoneers had no trim levels. They were packed from the factory as a limited model. It was to make it simpler to build to include everything in one package. But the Grand Wagomeers are worth a lot more. Theyre more refined. Have more features better creature comforts.. better A.C and so forth. Distributer and ingition system is better. The 2150 carb is better has automatic altitiude adjustment and so forth. The transfercases were also better. Thr intrunent cluster is better. The radio and speaker system is better. No more amp meter which always catchs on fire. Only thing a 70s has is the 401 tbh The last three years 89-91 chrysler improved on them A LOT and those last 3 years are worth way more. First things you should do is bypass that amp meter itll burn your Jeep down eventually. I know these FSJ like the back of my hand.. kinda like you do the XJ

FSJ content! YESSSSS! Own an 84 Grand Wagoneer and love it. It now sports a more modern LS powerplant. You're still rocking the AMC 360 and most likely a TH400 transmission. I sold my 360 to a friend with a bubble fender Javelin who wanted an extra motor. Love the cheese grater and pig nose grills! FSJs had multiple different grill designs throughout their run. You'll get acquainted with BJ's off road for parts. They have springs available stock or with a lift. FSJNetwork is a great forum for knowledge. As far as the weight, they aren't as heavy as you'd think. Most tip the scales around 4500#. That fuel tank? That's called a coffin fuel tank. That wing at the back is for keeping dust off the rear window as well as exhaust fumes from coming in when driving with the window down. Unsure how effective they actually are on that last part. The thing on the inner driver's fender is a vacuum reservoir. I agree on getting it running and enjoy for a bit. You can get replacement woodgrain for that stripe on either side. Personally, I'd rock the copper patina paint with some freshened wood grain. Yes, 3.31 is a legit ratio as was 2.72s in the 80s. Those electric pumps need to push or their life will be shortened drastically. Only the diaphragm pumps are designed to pull that far. Retrosound makes a decent 2 post style radio for the original look. As far as bolt in LS stuff, hit up Flyin Iron Fabrication for their bolt in motor mounts. I'll be following even more for the non-typical content. Good luck!

The few 60's and 70s and early 80's wagoneers they were th400 automatic transmission and yeah i was guessing it was a amc 360, but 390 or 401 amc would be freaking nice

Good find! The front trailer ball is for pushing trailers around. Also, just 4.0l/AW4 swap it. That swap is pretty standard these days. The 232 and 258 where options in those, so the 4.0l is a drop in. Looks like you've got the Dana 20 t-case, so keep that. And find a disk brake Dana44 front axle to replace that old Dana30 closed knuckle. Ryan at BJs Offroad is a great supplier of parts and the IFSJA forums are great info sources.

I say drive it like it is clean it up make it road worthy and just enjoy the classic for a while. Maybe a short road trip getting some parts or checking out a new place to ride, then a spring over lift makes these things look the way they should have from the factory. Run some forest service roads or easy trails. I have had a couple of these before and they are a blast I wish I had kept them factory or close to it and just kept them alive and ls swapped them for a daily driver/family adventure rig. The razor grilles are the best looking too in my opinion they were on cherokees and trucks 66-78 that was the first thing I did on mine.

Dex . . Until you have multiple multiple keys to the doors, always leave one of the back doors unlocked or leave the driver window cracked. They eventually become self auto-lock when closed ( personal experience with my 79 FSJ Cherokee . . That I dont have the option to leave a back door unlocked) Also, fkn genius place to store the air line on the XJ, definitely doing that to mine

Also, holler at me if you ever need clips for the tailgate window lift arm ends. I only needed 1 for mine, but bought a box of 50, and probably won't ever find that many FSJ Chetokee/Waggies or whatever mid 6os dodge car that used them window clips.

Look on the side of the block, in 3 inch numbers is the engine size. If it is a 401 that alone is worth some good money. Since it has a 2 bbl carb on it, probably a 360. The Transmission is a chrysler 727 but the starter ring is on the flex plate, not on the torque converter. AMC was notorious for putting any engine they made in a vehicle, even a 232 6cyl in it or a J10.

AMC 360 Turbo 400 Dana 20 Rebuild that carb and that thing will run forever. It’s a motorcraft 2100 series, one of the best oem carbs ever made. That has undesirable axles, swap 76-79 axles in it for front disc brakes and open knuckle. FSJs are awesome, running and driving you’ll love it. LS is a waste, that 360 (in good running condition) will easily power that thing around. You don’t need fuel injection unless you plan to Offroad it. I’d say leave it stock, simple, and fun to drive.

BJ’s Off-road is a great place to get parts, they specialize in the FSJ platform.

Not sure about this driveline specifically, but at least in old chevys if there's atf in the transfer case then the seal is bad between the transmission and t case. Would explain why the trans was out of fluid

Th400 hydromatic is pretty much gms most durable automatic transmission about the next best things to it having a manual shift transmission,, oh and don't look for the downshift lockdown cable on the carburetor it doesn't have one its a electrical detent switch,,and I love the oem jeep hubcaps.. its at the gas pedal bracket and usually up at the firewall green and orange wires running back to the transmission...

The weird thing about SJs is they used a Chrysler 727TF transmission but they used AMC engines. The 360 in these are the same block as the AMC 304 all the way up to the 401 small block and have nothing to do with Chrysler 318/340/360 LA motors.

I would just clean it up and drive it. If the engine is good, do electronic distributor. If engine is too weak, stay with a Jeep engine. Those SJs have decent demand, now that so many have been scraped.

By 2 minutes into the video I was lookin' for a monkey and a football....LOL...Your buddy is dangerous , especially when no one is familiar with the systems you are working with.....You will find that Jeep is a conglomeration of Chrysler, GM, and Ford parts off of the shelf.....You have an excellent source of carburetion and simple ignition systems information in Uncle Tony.......The Jeep is yours, but the lady really deserves to stay basically as built. AMC had some good engineers and sometimes actually followed their foresight. As time goes on you will see more and more of their ingenuity put to use and standing the tests of time......Remember that is the grand parent of Jeep SUVs ..........Keep on posting!
