It's a ticking time bomb. There will be an exploit for Windows 7 eventually that Microsoft won't patch. You'll be at risk of losing data or being spied on. You're likely fine for another month to 6 months, but after I would not recommend using it. From now on Windows 7 is low hanging fruit for hackers, so you should really stop using it (if you connect to the internet) as soon as possible.

So, I went to the MS Download Win 10 site, and ran the tool to create installation media on a USB drive. It took awhile for the tool to download and update all the components. You have two options to upgrade to 10, boot from the USB, and do a clean install, or run the Setup from an admin account in Win 7. I decided to try it on an older HP laptop, almost 10 years old. The setup program took about 3-4 hours to run, but it was totally automated, and I only had to interact with it at the very end to setup Win 10 on the pc. The old PC seems to run OK, some programs that were not compatible were not migrated, and it actually seems to run some apps better. Not bad for a free upgrade.

My own rig is actually my home media server and that machine already runs FREENAS on it!! But today with how Microsoft keeps managing to break Win10 with it's latest big update, I'm doing down the route of dual-booting my PC with Ubuntu and Win10. I use Linux Mint on one machine and Windows 10 on another. I have not seen any difference in speed. If you are not tech-savvy Windows is better because everything works well. There is a lot of software that doesn't run, or run well, on Linux. If you are not tech-savvy and Linux goes wrong, (and it does go wrong), you are screwed. The online support for Linux is awful. Linux sites can be arrogant and unfriendly to beginners.
@darrellhagan61245 жыл бұрын
Please lets stop with the "Just use Linux" recommendations. I use Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on one machine, Widows 7 on another, and Windows 10 on a laptop. Yes, Linux has its place but there just isn't enough software available for it for many needs. For example, I am an avid Short Wave listener and I use an SDRPlay model RSP1A Software Defined Radio for most listening. There are programs available for this on both Windows & Linux but the available Windows versions are vastly superior to their Linux counterparts and are also MUCH easier to install and configure. And the Windows versions are regularly updated whereas most of the Linux versions are spotty at best with updates. And this is just one example. I myself am a software developer and I've never written a line of code for Linux because the vast majority use Windows. Linux is fine for the few, not for the many. Not yet. Maybe someday, maybe never.

After getting silly messages when trying to install MX Linux, and seeing it crash every time, I went exploring and found Peppermint, which installed easily on three second-string 32-bit Pentium 4 Windows 7 machines, two of mine and one of my friend's. And its user-interface is comfortable close to Windows 7 and Windows 10. My friend of mine who is a computer greenhorn was delighted to see her machine running Peppermint, because it is so close in the user-experience to what she was used to. The only thing I found that I had to watch was the burner/etcher. The recommended one for Peppermint is Rufus, but the installation failed when I used that. So I used BalenaEtcher, (thank you for that recommendation), and the installation went smoothly (if selected Minimum installation and deselected install updates during installation). All done and dusted in very little time, and three working machines that have escaped from the Windows jail. The only thing left to do is find antivirus software for Peppermint as good as BitDefender on Windows. I also explored Xubuntu: what an unfriendly kludge that is!

Win 10 was fine until about December 2018 when some MS updates appeared to have screwed everything up, and couldn't be bothered to go through the hassle of reinstalling it. I stuck to Win 7 for daily use and playing a game called World of Tanks. A few days ago I reinstalled Win 10, and had problems with it. First it wouldn't update as it said there was a problem and try try again later. The I searched the internet and found an MS website where I could download all the updates which I did. Then I found that although my primary monitor is my Dell 27" 2560 x 1440 G-Sync, the game would only appear briefly on my 2nd monitor, and just shut down to the task bar, and would not display on either screen. The I made my 2nd monitor (Dell 24" 1920 x 1200) as the primary, loaded the game and it displayed on it OK. I have never had this problem before since starting the game back in 2014, with W10, or W7 until now after reinstalling W10. Apart from the game/monitor problems, it seems to work OK, but I continue to use W7, as I have a growing dislike of W10. My PC is up to the task with an i7-6700K, 16GB DDR4 memory, EVGA GF GTX 980Ti, Corsair HX850i, two Samsung 950Pro Nvme M.2 256GB cards (in the motherboard slots), Samsung 850 Evo 250GB SSD, and an Intel 750 SSD Nvme 400GB drive to choose from.. It worked, so now have a good working OS on that drive, and will now have to spend more time uninstalling all the crap (that allows me to), to knock it into shape........but it works....and now checking for MS updates, which also works and is busy downloading some updates....happy days...:)

Thank you Brian. I tried installing Linux Mint 19 on my old laptop that was running Vista. It installed okay but I was never able to make the wifi work. Initially, I connected to the Internet with an ethernet cable to download needed drivers. Still no wifi available. I couldn't use Linux without wifi and thus installed Windows 10 Home 32-bit. That works okay with exception of the graphics card, nvidia 6150. Win10 loaded a generic driver which works but limits the available resolution. so, that's where I'm at for now. No previous experience with Linux, so thought that I would give it a go, but without wifi, I can't use it. Geo from US

You can buy a mini wifi USB dongle for under $10 that will work with Linux... should just work. No driver install required.

Have 2 computers now. One with windows 7 and one with windows 10. My windowsa 10 computer had an auto update and then proceeded to shut down my computer completely and it refuses to work. Self repair on it is useless. My windows 7 is working fine. I am worried if i upgrade the dreaded auto updates will shut me down again. I dont trust windows 10. I am unsure what to do now....

windows 7 isn't inherently "less secure" than windows 10 now that it's not being updated by microsoft if you still run windows 7 like me, using a good and strong antivirus and, optionally, making entire system backups, you'll be as safe and secure, or even moreso than windows 10 users.

I can risk a virus getting thru my anti-virus software or I can go bankrupt buying a new computer with all new software. I think risking a virus is an acceptable risk.

it warms me to the core to hear all of this... Not just You but a few others up top as well. am also a windows 7 user and I ALSO hate windows 10. in the WORST case scenario... I am planning to move up to linux. it seems very promising there. but if anybody has any words of wisdom for that operating system that they think I should know.... let me know now. being a windows 7 user for so many years, I AM afraid to move on to something else... the only thing am currently kinda worried about.... should You trust the updates on linux? or are they the same as in windows platforms that all they add is fricking bloatware? I tend to keep my updates turned off, but am unsure if You should be doing that in a linux system(if You can EVEN turn it off that is... lol, did I mention I hate windows 10? lol, lol, lol, lol...). I have to say... the thought of having to ditch windows 7 and go on a new system has me feeling like a pilgrim venturing into new, undiscovered lands. . . .(trembles)

@@TheDeepThinker-sq3iy -- I was a long time MS user, started with DOS 2.2, and ended with Win 7 about 23 months ago. My first introduction to Linux was in college using Fedora 4 back about 2003; I hated it largely, I think, because XP was still fresh and just plainly the superior OS at the time. I haven't tried Fedora since then, but I'm sure that it has since matured into a very good OS. Like you, I cannot bear Windows X. While it does perform as an OS, it also acts like it claims the very hardware that I purchased as its own and it wants to force me to do things that I do not want to do. So, I decided to 'bite the bullet' and go Linux. I am very pleased with the change and would not return to Win 7 at this point even if MS decided to continue to support it for free on a perpetual basis. As Britec09 showed, it is a simple task to change to Linux. But, be sure to have a backup that you can restore from or reinstall Win 7 from in case you need to have something like documents, pictures, music, etc., to transfer to Linux that you may have forgotten about and will only remember them after the switch. Linux updates, in my experience, have not presented me with any problems. I am free to reject any and all updates but I have always permitted the updates; some are, of course, security updates and should not be treated lightly. With that said, I do not use an anti-virus even though free AV is available for Linux. If you watch out about what you introduce to your pc then you may not need an AV to protect you with Linux -- it has a pretty good security system on its own. You may want to try several distributions: MX as shown by Britec09, Mint, Ubuntu, etc., and you can easily try one by just running it from the flash drive instead of choosing to install it as Britec09 did. That way you can get a 'feel' of what you're about to get into. I started with Mint, a very nice OS, but moved to Ubuntu when I had a video card driver issue. My hardware is old at this point: i7 3770k and a pair of Sapphire HD 6970 video cards. I don't play the newer games so I cannot comment on them and newer games may be a problem for Linux, especially with AMD cards, but almost all of my games will play with Linux, Ubuntu in my case. I can't recall the titles but we're only talking about 2 or 3 games out of more than 100 that won't play. If you switch, it will be different and frustrating for some time as you learn how much control you really have over the hardware that you purchased. But, many of your questions can be answered rather quickly by searching the Linux community forums. Many of the people there have experienced the 'change' and are quite willing to help if you don't find your answer already posted to someone else's same or similar question.

@@WrinkledHound all of this sounds Nice.... but the whole "You don't really need a av" part sounds almost too good to be true... how does that work exactly? I mean.... I know that if You avoid any sort of suspicious website and stuff that can be a good way to avoid online hazards, but You can still end up picking up malware just by surfing the web sometimes or simply by going to certain domains if You don't have any sort of protection. how does linux do this on its own? another thing am seeing.... I have heard that what determines the possibility of any sort of online threat is just simply how popular a certain system is. for instance.... I have heard someone once tell me that apple systems don't get any viruses, but then I watched a whole video of someone explaining that that isn't exactly true when You hear someone say this.... its just apple isn't as popular as windows is, so the market for viruses are mostly focused there. say.... windows eventually loses the popularity contest(which considering that all they got left Now is 10, this just might happen soon enough, lol)... and linux then becomes all the rage, wouldn't I need protection, like a av then? and what about fake sites? if You decide to look something up online.... and You clicked to open and go to that site, whats protecting You from a malicious virus injection for falling for a fake site? so the updates DON'T slow down Your machine then? and as for games.... the only game I play on my computer is a minecraft free to download clone called minetest. just checked the main minetest page the other day, and thankfully the games site also supports linux. but the download options for that platform looks kinda crazy.... there's like about 10 different linux platforms, and talk about how the ones on the list may be out of date, and that if they are out of date, You can build from source . . . . the frick is that about?(lolz, sorry... I know You probably don't have the answers for everything). I also saw the fedora one You mentioned in Your post on that list. but if You also don't mind me asking.... which one of those linux platforms runs fastest for games? or do they all run in the same speed for games? or.... which linux platform comes closest to windows 7?
