Supervision doesn't make unsafe sleep suddenly safe. SIDS is silent and invisible. Babies shouldn't sleep in these environments even if supervised. Car seats are the one exception if baby falls asleep while you're actively driving. This is because the risk of being unsecured in the car is more dangerous than the risk of SIDS during the ride. That said, you should plan frequent stops if you have a baby with you to make sure they are getting breaks from the car seat.

Hey Nat, congrats on your pregnancy! I had a babe born in December, and we temperatured him after every change until he was back on his birthweight, so you are really keeping an eye on the temp. We used a thick sleeping bag and we preheated the mattress with a hot water bottle before putting him to bed. Also we kept his head covered with one of those hats. This should be enough if you are keeping the room at 16-18 degrees C. (Maybe Emma will respond with official advice, this was just my experience).

My son absolutely refused swaddling. But I had 2 anyway. Blankets didn’t work for him either. Sleeping bags are great and worked so well for my son. Don’t worry! You’ve got this!
@lcnb36402 жыл бұрын
Hello first of all congratulations! It is better use sleeping bags and a room thermometer. For winter it is best 2.5 tog. It also depends on the baby too. I use to swaddle him with a blanket as he felt cold. Always remember to leave the hips free not tight. You can check behind the neck or the chest to see if the baby is hot or cold. Once the baby can roll stop using blankets but sleeping bags. Hope this helps and don’t worry first child is always a challenge you will do great!

So insightful! Got a question: what about crib hammocks? (Like the womb hammock on furive, or the crescent womb hammock? ) Asking because I see conflicting information as some say its a trap if the baby manages to roll (but if the hammocks are made of breathable mesh they wouldn’t suffocate even if they did right?) While others say it’s not even possible for them to roll in them. Would love an expert opinion as my LO is willing to sleep in her crib at night, but not for naps even if it’s pitch black, sound machine on, no other noise, (non-weighted) sleep sack, pausing when she fusses, etc.. Right now she is only willing to nap on me, her car seat, her carrier, and possibly a rocker. But I figure a hammock is probably safer than a rocker or car seat - at least for supervised sleep if I use the baby monitor the entire nap?

And here's me thinking because he can sleep in the capsule for long periods during a trip that he can stay in it when we get home, or attached to the pram. Now I'm scared about taking long trips 😳 Read the comment about taking them out every 40 minutes, would you wake them up to take them out for a bit, and is this actually beneficial given that they're going back into the same position? What does taking them out actually do? I understand that it gives them a break, but if asphyxiation occurs because of the position not necessarily because of how long they have been in the position then does taking them out help? Freaking out 🙈 I think there definitely needs to be education about safe traveling.

@EmmaHubbard2 жыл бұрын
Hi! The AAP describe a safe sleep environment as - all babies sleep on their back, - on a flat, firm, separate sleep surface such as a bassinet, play yard or crib, - and to keep the baby's sleep space free of blankets, bumpers, toys or other objects. Red Nose Australia recommends using a sleeping bag that has appropriate size neck & arms holes & no hood. And they also recommend not using pillows until the child is at least 2 years of age and no longer sleeping in a crib.

if a baby is not safe to sleep in a car seat, then car seats are not safe. It is a fact that most babies fall asleep while driving. Any length of time would not be safe.

It is safe cause even in a car seat the risk of SIDS is small compared to having an unsecured infant in a car crash. If the car is not moving, the risk of SIDS is higher than the risk of dying in a car related accident. Also car seats are in a specific (safer) angle when they are in the car vs. randomly at home. When you place a car seat on the floor , it will not be in the exact same angle as in the car, and if the angle is different the safety is not checked by the company.

Whats the difference between letting a baby sleep in a car seat at home vs in the car? If we’re on a long drive and the baby sleeps in the car seat while in the car, isn’t it the same risk?
@EmmaHubbard2 жыл бұрын
When travelling in the car, for safety reasons it is important for the little one to travel in the car seat. But to help minimise the risk it is just recommended that you take a break and get the bub out of the car every 2 hours. When you remove the car seat from the car and place it in the house on the floor, bed or bench it can change the angle of the car seat and make it more upright which encourages that chin to chest position. And this increases the risk. Hope that helps!

Hi Kazi. I'm not available for a collaboration. I also noticed you used my name in the title of one of your videos about a product that I do not recommend. I'm sure there's no ill intent, but I don't like my name being used and would like it removed immediately as it implies we have an association or affiliation, which we do not. It also implies that I endorse the use of that product, which I certainly do not.
